Our Guild has been approached by the WIN shelter to donate quilts for their grand opening in June. This is an outstanding opportunity for us to give a little back to the community. Their requirement is for 18 twin, 6 queen, and 1 full size quilt. With time so short, I am asking each circle to donate some time and material to reach this goal. Each circle can work on this project in small groups and/or on the two scheduled work days that we have arranged at the church, May 26th and June 9th, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The quilts can be strip pieced or 9-patch and machine quilted. They need to be something that can be continuously used and cleaned. In other words, a good utility quilt. There is a possibility that some material may be obtained from P&B fabrics, donated by the local quilt shops and from our stashes. I am asking each and every guild member to help with this project.

Cotton Patch Quilt Guild

Regular Meeting, March 22, 2001 Kavanaugh Methodist Church, 6:30 p.m.

Forty-three members and two guests met at the church for the monthly guild meeting. Welcome, Lisa Coker and Linda Weatherly. We hope you’ll visit with us again! Also, a special welcome to our new member, Norma Johnson.

The Railroad quilt is finished; Debra Hagar will make the label. Joy Gregory asked that any outstanding fabric packets that were distributed for the Butterfly quilt be returned to her. There will be a workday on April 21.

The library cabinet has arrived and was immediately filled with books, tapes, etc. by Mary Lou Strohm.

Jane Martyn is still refining the guild website, and would appreciate suggestions and comments from members.

Alice Cooney reminded us that we may still sign a commitment to finish those pesky UFO’s languishing in our closets.

Thirty-five people have signed up for Pebble Rehm’s Mystery Quilt session on May 19. Pebble currently has 14 on the list for the Jacobean Applique workshop in July. Please contact Pebble if you or someone you know are interested in participating. There will be a $5.00 guest fee to attend the Jacobean guild program on May 24, presented by Pat Campbell. Light refreshments only, will be served that night.

Many, many thanks to Kathy Vestal for compiling our very first directory. Many hours of work went into the project and we sincerely appreciate her efforts. In addition to a member roster, the directory contains guild by-laws, program calendar, current list of library resources and blank pages for added notes and information.

A committee was appointed, consisting of Katharine McCaw, Debbie Hagar and Joy Gregory, to consider possible beneficiaries of surplus guild funds, amounting to between $1500 and $1800. Several worthy suggestions have been made, including but not limited to, the Win shelter, church summer camp scholarships and an academic scholarship. The committee will present recommendations at a future meeting.

"The Texas Quilt That Changed My Life" was presented by David Lieber, columnist for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Lieber’s humorous and heart-warming tale of his on-going evolvement as a Texan centered around THE QUILT, a forlorn and left-behind remnant of a segment of his life. After deciding that, as a hobby, he would restore the quilt, Lieber’s life took paths eventually leading to new friends, personal happiness and a brand new quilt.

The program was followed by Show and Tell.

Door prize drawings smacked of nepotism; Ruth Bacon and her daughters, Michele Chitsey and Debra Hagar, dominated the drawings. What is the mathematical probability of that happening? Shirley Hogan and Sherry Worley also won prizes.

Respectfully,

Katharine McCaw– Recording Secretary

FRIENDSHIP CIRCLE NEWS:

Cotton Belles

The Cotton Belle’s meeting for April was cancelled due to illness. The next meeting will be at the home of Allen Day. The program will be "Working With Wool" by Sherry Worley.

Cotton Blossoms

Cotton Blossoms circle met on March 19th at the Presbyterian Church on Monroe St. in Commerce. We put together a group donation quilt to be taken to the Ronald McDonald House. Nine Blossoms met again on April 2nd for a very productive work day. Viola Brummet and Priscilla had their challenge quilts ready to show and they were impressive to say the least. Viola had another quilt ready that will be given also. After a short business meeting, we got busy and tacked the group quilt that was started in the last meeting. We then pin basted two full sized quilts for members. Alice Cooney has graciously agreed to present the program for our next meeting on April 16th. We are all looking forward to her presentation. Join us if you can on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month at the Presbyterian Church on Monroe St. in Commerce.

    Cotton Strippers

Members of the Cotton Strippers met Thursday, April 12th, at the church. Services were going on upstairs for Easter so it was difficult to keep the laughter under control but we managed. Debra’s sister joined us from Arkansas as our only guest. Several members arrived early and managed to baste a quilt. The food that was provided was just wonderful. It was great to have Anna and Annette back with us. They have been extremely busy with the shop and haven’t been able to come in several months. Sue is still taking reservations for the July retreat so don’t forget to sign up. It will be here before you know it! Congratulations to our circle members, Maejean Nixson and Barbara Booth; they both won ribbons at the Tyler Quilt Show.

The Strippers made plans to work on the WIN quilts and then Show and Tell followed.

The Refreshment committee for the May meeting is Paula, Mary Lou, Kathy, Lindy, Shirley and Annette.

Sunbonnet Sues

The Sunbonnet Sues met at the home of Kathy Vestal. Members discussed the upcoming retreat to the mountain and Sue will work up a food list. Kathy provided a great dinner and everyone enjoyed seeing Kathy’s new sewing machine table that she got for Christmas. The May meeting will be on the mountain and the June meeting will be at the home of Katharine McCaw.

The Gingerbread Gang got loose recently. Are you missing any??? If so, check with the GBG’s ringleader.

After hitting the local quilt show in Tyler and absconding with one of the door prizes, the gang headed for the ranch near San Antonio to hide out for the weekend.

The gang would like to say a BIG thanks to Pebble and her folks for making their wildflower trip so wonderful!

Tyler Quilt Show Ribbons

Maejean Nixson– 2nd Place (2 person quilt), quilted by Connie Cawthon and 3rd Place on her applique quilt

Barbara Booth– Honorable Mention; Pug Wichern was the quilter

Congratulations!!

If you attended the Dallas Quilt Show on Friday, you may have seen our very own guild members, Betty and Allen Day, working there.

Allen volunteered to help with quilt appraisals. There were many beautiful new and antique quilts brought to be appraised by Terri Ellis. Terri is certified by the American Quilters’ Society and lives in Fort Worth. Jane Hall was also one of the appraisers on Friday. The quilt appraisers can usually tell the age of a quilt and the value in case of loss. If a quilt is lost, stolen or destroyed, the insurance company will only pay the replacement value of the fabric unless it has been appraised.

Betty volunteered to help sell lecture tickets. The lectures were given by Judy Warren Blaydon and Georgia Bonesteel. Volunteers get into the quilt show free and ticket sellers are allowed to attend the lecture after it starts

Library News

Mary Lou has purchased 2 new books for the library.

Be sure to return any overdue books and/or other resources!

Sunshine and Shadow

Connie Cawthon’s husband, Bobby ( he is also Betty Day’s brother) was seriously ill and hospitalized in March with pneumonia. He is doing much better now.

Vickie Dees’ (Greenville Quilt Shop) granddaughter was in a bad accident and seriously hurt. She is in Parkland Hospital.

Our thoughts and prayers are with each of these families.

If you have any news for this column, please contact me and I will be sure to put it in the next newsletter. Thank you. Pam Hodapp

Note to the Membership

If it wouldn't be a problem, please do not wear heavy perfumes to Guild. Several of our members are highly allergic. Thanks!

Sue Childer’s Chocolate Chip Cookies

In a bowl, beat together on high speed until thoroughly combined (about 5 to 10 minutes):

1 cup Crisco

1/2 cup butter

1+1/3 cups sugar

1 cup packed brown sugar

Beat in:

4 eggs, one at a time beating well after each addition.

** 1 Tbsp. brandy vanilla **

1 tsp. lemon juice

Add:

2 tsp. salt

1+1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon

2 tsp. baking soda

3 heaping cups of quick cooking rolled oats

3 cups flour

Mix in:

3-12 oz. packages chocolate chips

2 to 3 cups chopped pecans

Let the dough sit for at least 1 hour before starting to bake.

For each cookie, drop a number 40 scoop or coffee measure size ball of dough on a lightly greased baking sheet, press to flatten slightly. Place cookies about 3" apart. Bake in oven at 350 degrees for 14-15 minutes or until golden brown.

** I make my own. Put a vanilla bean or 2 in an 8 to 12 ounce bottle. Add brandy to fill bottle to top. Let steep for at least 2 weeks in a cool dark place before using. Brandy vanilla may be used in any recipe where vanilla is called for and a rich taste is needed.

You may also use the same method of making vanilla by substituting rum or vodka for the brandy. Rum vanilla is great in fruit dishes and vodka vanilla is good for when you want the vanilla flavor to be light, or do not want to have a darker color, such as in frosting. When the bottle is nearing empty refill and let set again. I usually have 2 bottles of each going, one in use and one steeping. About every other refill, add another bean, but keep the old… Though not as much flavor, there is some left, or use it to make a pudding or custard.

Quotes for Quilters

When it’s time to put your foot down ~ machine quilt!

Quilting is a journey, not a destination.

An heirloom quilt is a hand-me–down that you are glad to keep.

In God we trust, but have the stitch-ripper handy!

You can tell a new quilter  she has no stash of fabric.

The quilter is not a different kind of person, but every quilter is a different kind of artist.

A cat on a quilt purrs louder.

Husband overheard at quilt show: " She’s over there, buying some of that ‘wonder fabric’, as in I wonder what she’s going to do with it all!"
