Dear CPQG Member,

All of us that went to the lake for the summer retreat worked, ate, talked, and enjoyed ourselves so much that we now need a vacation to recover. All kidding aside, we did have a great time. I hope to see more of you there next year. The summer is just about to go away and the children are about to return to school. It's time to think about all the projects that we have put on hold for the last few months. Don't forget to complete the UFOs that are coming due very soon. If anyone has any ideas or helpful hints or suggestions for the expenditure of the excess money, please contact one of the committee members.

August Guild Meeting
Guest Speaker:

Paula Platter
The Life & Times of
Isaac Merritt Singer
"Mr. Singer"

Cotton Patch Quilt Guild
Regular Meeting, July 26, 2001 Kavanaugh Methodist Church, 6:30 p.m.

Forty-one members and four guests of the Cotton Patch Quilt Guild met at Kavanaugh United Methodist Church at 6:30 p.m. on July 26, 2001 with the president, Huey Nobles, presiding.

Business:
Alice Cooney has extended the deadline for completing UFOs until September. Alice took extreme measures - by calling NAMES ! - to get those lagging and elusive fat quarters turned in.
The drawing for Jim Gatlin's workshop quilt was won by Joan Biggs.
The raffle quilt of the Quilters' Guild of Plano was displayed.
Two books have been donated to the library.
Paula Bowman reminded us that the church needs host groups to serve Solid Rock on Wednesday nights during the school year. Our guild has done this annually, and will again make a commitment for the next year.
Program Chairman, Pebble Rehm, has booked next year's programs through May, 2002. This will ease the responsibility on the next program chairman. Pebble reminded us that next month's program will be Paula Platter, presenting "The Life and Wild Times of Mr. Singer".
Everyone enjoyed Show and Tell before Pebble introduced Sandra Douglas, from McKinney, who demonstrated all about what's "To Dye For". Using assistants, Sue Childers, Kay Colcleasure, Letha Bost and Maxine Leverett, Sandra showed that fabric dyeing needn't be messy, expensive or intimidating. We all have most of the supplies right in our own kitchens. Sandra will offer a workshop on Sept. 29 from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the church. Cost will be $10.00 if there are at least 15 participants. There will be a $20.00 materials fee; students should bring pre-washed muslin and zip-lock bags. Pebble will then take home the completed fat-quarter projects and, at our annual Christmas party, award them to a lucky winner.
Door prizes were won by: Frances Holloway, Elaine Clark, Kathy Vestal, Barbara Ratcliff, Maejean Nixson, Alan Day, Paula Bowman, Shirley Hogan, Sherry Worley and Donna Moon.
Our guests were Jeanne and Vonnie Valdez, Sandra Douglas, Corinne Lageose and Elaine Clark. Welcome, and we hope you'll visit with us again.

Respectfully,
Katharine McCaw Recording Secretary

FRIENDSHIP CIRCLES

Cotton Belles

The Cotton Belles met on August 6th at the home of Sue Miller. The circle will work on Christmas stockings on September 20 at LaNell’s house. There will be a potluck lunch. Show & Tell: Sherry brought three aprons that she bought in an estate sale. She also brought an embroidered baby coverlet and Block of the Quarter - Log Cabin with cat and Foldy potholders. Sue shared the Diamond Field quilt that was made by her mother. Alice Cooney brought a block that was made using mill goods from Lowell Museum Reproductions. Jeanne brought blocks that she is making from half square triangles.
Ollie and Jeanne Kirby presented the program. They visited Ghost Ranch and shared the seminars that they attended. They demonstrated techniques to be used for relaxing muscles in the body. The guinea pig was really relaxed and went home happy.
The September meeting will be held at Nora’s house. The program will be Quilt Labels. Sherry will bring dessert.
The October meeting will be held at Jeanne’s. Sue will bring dessert.

Cotton Blossoms

The Cotton Blossoms circle has been meeting as usual on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month, but we decided to give our members a break for the summer. We are just working on getting projects finished up. We lave most of our Challenge quilts for Ronald McDonald house turned in and they are great as usual and now we are getting our quilts ready for the Boles Home project. It has been and enjoyable time for us to get together and help each other put the finishing touches on things. Hopefully everybody will be all fresh and ready to start new things in September.

Cotton Strippers

Members of the Cotton Strippers met Thursday, August 9. Refreshments were leftovers from the July retreat, plus a few extra dishes and it was a great meal as usual. Thanks to Donna, Alice, Huey, Sue, Joan, Paula, Mary Lou, Shirley, and Connie (did I forget anyone?). Sue gave a retreat update and read off everyone that has signed up for Fall retreat. The deadline is August 31 before there is a $10 late fee charged. Katharine asked that the circle participate in making friendship blocks for Paula’s wedding and the group agreed. Paula is picking out her pattern so at the January meeting the circle will make her friendship blocks to be signed at her wedding in March. The group decided to participate in Solid Rock on Wednesday, September 19 and we will make Taco Salad. Paula will get a list together for sign up and we will complete that at the September circle meeting. Your dish needs to be at the church between 5 and 5:30 with dinner being served at 5:45.

Refreshments for September will be a salad supper with everyone bringing their favorite salad. Desserts will be brought by Lindy Hammonds, Shirley Shaw and Vickie Schumann. Don’t forget your secret pal as  the end of the year is rapidly approaching!

Jane will be out of town for the September meeting. If you have anything for the Sept. agenda, please get it to Sue.

Sunbonnet Sues
The Sunbonnet Sues met at the home of Maxine Leverett. We had a tour of her beautiful new home. Congratulations Maki!! After some fresh fruit refreshments, Maki gave us the grand tour. We helped fold her fabric and put it away in her huge new sewing room. A filing cabinet and other boxes were moved to give her more space. A good time was had by all.

FABRIC DYEING WORKSHOP

After seeing Sandra Douglas’ fabric dyeing program at the July guild meeting, you will likely be dieing to dye your own fabric. Sandra will teach a workshop on 4 separate fabric dyeing procedures. The first is immersion dyeing, which will be demonstrated during the July program and which results in 20 different colors. The second is gradation dyeing which is several shades of a single color. The 3rd is fabric manipulation to get different effects of the dye on the fabric. The last is fabric painting.
This is a four hour class. You will go home with 48 fat quarters all dyed in different colors and designs as well as a little extra mixed dye and dye powder to continue experimenting at home. It will cost $15 per person with a minimum of 10 people. If more than 10 sign up, the cost is reduced per person. There is also a $20 supply fee. Sandra orders the dye powder and other ingredients for us at a reduced rate.  The dates will be set later in the fall.

August is Kavanaugh's month to stock the FISH pantry. This is a wonderful way for the guild to help with outreach in the community, and to continue to say "Thank You" to Kavanaugh for providing such a great facility for us to meet. Bring canned, boxed and non-perishable foods to the August 23 meeting and let's completely fill the collection box in the kitchen !

The next Newsletter Deadline is Monday, September 17th.

Note to the Membership

If it wouldn't be a problem, please do not wear heavy perfumes to Guild. Several of our members are highly allergic. Thanks!

Have a SAFE and Happy Labor Day !
