President’s Letter

Dear CPQG Member,

Congratulations!  The CPQG has reached the 10 year milestone.  You have come a long way from the original group of dedicated women.  May we continue to grow, provide new ideas, teach more people, become closer than we are now, and last for another 10 years.  I am proud to be selected to lead such a talented and giving group of people.  I have enjoyed knowing, learning from, and maybe giving a little in return.  I look forward to the next year.  Pebble has a program schedule that will peak the interest of everyone.  Now that the holidays have flown by, it’s time to think what we are going to do to complete some of the UFOs that are stacked everywhere.   On a serious note, if there is any issue (good or bad) that you would like brought before the guild, please either notify any board member or send any of us a note.  Don’t forget to think about any proposed changes to the bylaws.  The proposed changes should be given to a board member by the first of March.

Your President

Cotton Patch Quilt Guild Minutes

Regular Meeting, January 25, 2001             Kavanaugh Methodist Church, 6:30 p.m.

Kay Colcleasure presided as forty wannabe-Quilto-winners met at Kavanaugh United Methodist Church at 6:30 on January 25, 2001, including nine guests:  Kay Myers, Edith LaCook, Jill Watts, Esta Basye, Jo Ann Milliken, Vickie Dees, Carmen Cortez, Luke and Dylan Cooper, and our annual ad hoc member, John Martyn.  We welcomed each, and hope they will all return.

No action was taken regarding surplus funds.

   New board members were installed.

In appreciation for two years of leadership, out-going president, Kay Colcleasure, was presented a lovely basket overflowing with Christmas fat-quarters.

Jane Martyn distributed information regarding the March retreat, as well as the Cotton Strippers Secret Pal forms.

Next month marks the 10th anniversary of the guild.  Proposed changes to the by-laws may be presented at the February meeting.  The proposed budget for 2001 is posted in this newsletter and will be discussed and voted on  at the February meeting.

Efforts will continue to locate a suitable storage cabinet for the library books.  A reserve balance of $2000 will be maintained.

Pebble Rehm announced the programs for this year.

Alice Cooney distributed sign-up cards for those wishing to participate in a UFO challenge to continue until August; one fat-quarter per project to enroll.

Kathy Vestal announced that annual dues of $24.00 are payable in January and delinquent in March: at that time a new membership roster will be distributed.  Membership cards will be available at the February meeting.

Mary Lou Strohm reported that there are many new books in the guild library.  Unfortunately, there are also many overdue and/or lost books.  After 30 days, names and titles will be posted in the newsletter

Pam Hodapp, newsletter editor, announced that February 10th is the deadline for next month’s articles.  Members were asked to indicate their preference:  on-line or postal

Delivery of their newsletter.

The Railroad quilt is in the home stretch and almost ready for binding.  Pebble Rehm asked that members bring in 2+1/2” by 22” strips of 30’s fabrics that she will incorporate into the binding.  The drawing will take place in May.

Sherry Worley reminded participants that this month’s Charm Squares were available for exchange.  Worley reported that she and Sue Miller had attended the meeting of the Texas Association of Quilt Guilds last summer, and recommended that we give consideration to joining.  The membership cost is based on the number of guild members.  Action tabled.

Show and Tell, as always, revealed wonderful estate sale finds and beautiful handwork by our members.  Maejean Nixson wowed (inspired?) us all with her magnificent four-year project, an appliqued masterpiece completely covered in half-inch cross hatching, 18 stitches to the inch!

John Martyn, again assisted by his agile “runner”, Dylan Cooper, did his best to maintain order during the Quilto game.  Although not actually proven, cries of collusion were heard after Jane’s THIRD Quilto.  (She gracefully withdrew from competition!).  Grand blackout winners were Kay Colcleasure and Michele Chitsey.  Barbara Ratcliff and Sue Miller won the loser’s prize for having the most blank spaces remaining on their cards!

Executive Board Meeting

January 10, 2001

The outgoing and incoming members of the executive boards of the Cotton Patch Quilt Guild met at Ryan’s Steak House in Greenville at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 10, 2001 for the purpose of drafting a proposed budget for 2001 and discussing any business pertaining to the budget.

Annual dues will remain $24.00, prorated 50% after June.

A 50% non-refundable deposit will be required at the time of registering for any workshop.  A contract with the presenter will not be signed until all money has been paid.

No funds will be budgeted for a quilt show.

Action will be taken to purchase a rolling library cart, as well as the materials to construct PVC quilt racks.  Money for these items will be taken from capital funds.  Jane, Ruth and Katharine will investigate carts, and Pebble and Annette will check into racks.  This does not supercede last month’s suggestions regarding excess funds in the treasury.  It is hoped that these purchases can be made in addition to donations being made to charitable organization(s).

Recommendation:  That the guild make a donation of $500.00 to Kavanaugh United Methodist Church in lieu of a fund-raising quilt.

The guild hopes to be on-line within the month, at no cost to the guild.  Jane Martyn and Pam Hodapp are facilitating.

FRIENDSHIP CIRCLES

Cotton Blossoms

The Blossoms circle met at the Presbyterian Church in Commerce on Monday, Feb. 5th.  We had a very enjoyable meeting catching up on all the news since we met last.  It seemed like a long time with all the extra Mondays we have had lately.

Several had show and tell and we always enjoy seeing new things that the members have created.  We received our fabrics for the challenge quilts for Ronald McDonald.  Now comes the hard part, deciding how to make the quilts.  We made plans for a group quilt to be started at the next meeting.

One of our members, Lorene Leinart, is having health problems and we wish her the best and hope she will be well enough to join us again real soon.

We meet the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month at 3:00 p.m.  At the Presbyterian Church on Monroe St. in Commerce.  Come join us if you can!

Cotton Belles

The Cotton Belles met on February 5, 2001 at the home of Ollie and Jeanne Kirby.  The group received a thank you letter and a card from Scottish Rite Hospital.  Their Christmas Bazaar raised $30,000.00 for the hospital.  The next bazaar will be held in June.

The members discussed projects for future meetings.  The donations to  F.I.S.H.- Hunt County Shared Ministries may be in cash or food donations.  A $60.00 donation was collected for F.I.S.H.

Show & Tell:  Bernice brought a chicken pincushion that we will make at our next meeting.  Jeanne showed a handmade doll with jointed arms and legs.  Sherry brought a cross-stitched quilt top that will be quilted for Scottish Rite Hospital.  Bonnie Longacre donated the quilt top and several panels.

Ollie Kirby presented the program.  The group learned about herbs to be used for cooking and health.  Included was a trip to Ollie’s herb garden.

The next meeting will be held at the home of Tip & Bernice Tipton on March 5th.  The members will need fabric for a chicken body.  Bernice will furnish beaks and feet; bring your own tail.  Bring your machine, we will work on ABC quilts in the afternoon.

Cotton Strippers

The Strippers met at the Church building on February 9.  Visitors included Maejean’s husband Amon Nixson, daughter Vonnie and daughter-in-law Sue.

Great refreshments were brought by the Pajama Mama’s.  The Strippers discussed participating in additional Solid Rock dinners for the church.  Katharine passed around a sign up sheet for everyone to participate on February 21.  Please meet at the church by 5 with your dish or make arrangements to get it to someone before Wednesday.  Serving starts at 5:45 p.m..  Paula will be checking into additional dates for us to host Solid Rock.

Sue discussed last minute details for the March retreat.  There are still one-two additional spaces.  Fall Retreat in November has open spaces also.   The dates are November 15-18.  Next year the cost will increase some due to the cost of the park increasing.  The Summer retreat will be $25 and the dates are July 12-15 at a camp near Lake Tawokoni.  More information will be given as it gets closer.

Katharine was mailing the friendship blocks to Fran Chadwick and everyone signed them.  Two quilts were basted in, one for Mary Lou and one for Katharine’s friend Diane.  Thanks to all those that helped.

Members discus going to the Dallas Quilt Show or Tyler Quilt Show as a big group.  More discussion at the next meeting.  Maejean will have two quilts entered into the Tyler show.

REFRESHMENTS:  March meeting will be Alice, Sara, Vickie, Pam, Janice and Barbara Ratcliff.

Sunbonnet Sue

The Sunbonnet Sue group met at the home of Maxine Leverett. Individual projects were worked on. Connie helped Maxine with her scanner. Due to the Stripper retreat in March, the next meeting will be in April at the home of Kathy Vestal.

Dues for the year 2001 must be paid at the February meeting or you will be dropped from the roster.  Please turn in your money to Kathy Vestal.

 HELP!

The Railroad Quilt is almost finished.  We need a variety of ‘30s fabrics to make a pieced rainbow binding.  If you have any to spare, we would like to collect 22” x 2+1/2” strips.     Please get them to me by retreat time so we can complete the quilt.

Dear CPQG members,

I want to thank you so much for the basket of Christmas fabrics.  I really love it.  Several times I have sat down and just looked through the basket at all the different fabrics.  I have just been petting them.  I think I will probably use them in the hand pieced scrappy Christmas Seven Sisters top that I am working on.  It will take a while but you will be seeing all of those Christmas fabrics in my quilt top.  I enjoyed being President to such a great guild and then to get all of those Christmas fabrics, too.  Wow!  Thanks again.

                      Your Ex-Prez,

                      Kay

I Have A Question?

Did Maxine Leverett give you a background block to make me a Sunbonnet Sue block?  No pressure at all, but if you are not planning to make a block, I could use the background fabric to be making alternate Dresden plate blocks for my quilt.  I would like to use this quilt for a friendship group/quilt program that I’m developing with a friend.  This fabric is no longer available, which is my problem.  Thanks so much to you who have given me blocks.  I treasure them so much.

Charm Squares Exchange

We will be cutting 26 Squares this month.  The following is a schedule for the next year .  Bring your new squares to Sue Childers and pick yours up if you were in last month’s exchange.  There will be a sign up sheet for the next year.   We are asking those interested in  doing the exchange to commit themselves through January of 2002 so that we can prepare our fabrics according to a final count and be able to purchase them when they are on sale.  Thanks.
