Dear CPQG Member,

It’s a great time when so many people pull together and perform a great service. I thank you for all the hard work to accomplish so much in such a short time. This month at the guild meeting all of the fruits of your labor will be given to the people that need a helping hand. The quilts will be donated to the WIN shelter. Also, this month, we will be presenting the donation quilt to the winner, Ginger Thomas. Now that the summer season has started, we have more things to occupy our time. We have our children, grandchildren, relatives, and friends competing for our attention and time. Just remember to give yourself a timeout and go to your corner and quilt, quilt, quilt!

Cotton Patch Quilt Guild

Regular Meeting, May 24, 2001 Kavanaugh Methodist Church, 6:30 p.m.

Program:

President Huey Nobles presided as the Cotton Patch Quilt Guild convened at the church for the May meeting. Forty-five members and twelve guests were delightfully entertained by nationally recognized appliqué artist and designer, Pat Campbell, as she displayed her brilliantly colorful and intricately designed quilts and explained how her interest in appliqué evolved. Her July Jacobean workshop at Kavanaugh, which had been completely filled, was expanded to include additional students. The guild welcomed guests: Deanna Hasten, Louise Stripling, Bettie Hammock, Ann Mosser, Blanche Williams, Timi Ann Welch, Bili Grozier, Jackie Clark, Colleen Hines, Pat Sparks, Linda Johnson, Carol Reaves and Dorothy Boettcher.

Business:

Joy Gregory and Debra Hagar displayed the Butterfly quilt.

Sara Bobbitt reminded the guild of the workday this Saturday, at the church. We will work on the WIN quilts.

Debra is finalizing the logo for the guild’s new pin and shirt. Cost of the shirt hasn’t been determined.    Lisa Coker will embroider a sample for our inspection. Debra will also see that our tax number is reactivated.

The highlight of the evening was the drawing for the Railroad quilt. The winner is Ginger Thomas, of Greenville; the lucky ticket was sold by Paula Bowman. Treasurer, Ruth Bacon, will have a fundraising total for us next month.

Mary Lou Strohm announced that several books have been donated to the library. Overdue materials are an ongoing problem, so from now on, anyone keeping books, etc. out for three months or longer will be assessed the retail value.

Jane Martyn asked that new members see her for our password and website information. Among the many Show and Tells was the Mystery Block from last Saturday’s Mystery Quilt Workshop, taught by Pebble Rehm. It is a 15-inch block, a variation of "Goose in the Pond".

Door prize winners were: Sara Bobbitt, Sue Miller, Dorothy Ford, Jackie Clark, Pat Sparks, Joy Gregory, Joan Biggs, Linda Johnson, Sherry Worley, Kathy Vestal, Pebble Rehm, Jan Ainsworth, Elaine Sprague, Norma Johnson, Allen Day, Connie Cawthon and Barbara Ratcliff.

Next month’s program will be presented by The Overachievers, from Aubrey, TX.

Respectfully,

Katharine McCaw– Recording Secretary

FRIENDSHIP CIRCLES

Cotton Belles

The Cotton Belles met at the home of Susan and Cinda Cross on June 4, 2001. The members discussed the quilts for WIN. Sherry brought the quilt that was made using "Mo’s Quilt" pattern, and stippled with variegated thread. Allen will make the label. LaNell brought two nine-patch quilts that were quilted by the guild. LaNell had put the binding on them. The Cotton Belles will not meet in July. The August meeting will be held at the home of Sue Miller. Ollie and Jeane Kirby will present the program.

Show and Tell: Bernice brought rolls of fabric that she had bought at Canton. She is donating this fabric for bindings on the ABC and Scottish Rite quilts. Bernice also gave us a recipe for bubbles and taught us how to make bubble makers using coated house wire. LaNell has made Goose in the Pond quilt blocks. These were her blocks from the mystery quilt class. A friend gave Sue 40’s and 50’s pieced fabric. Sue is donating these for charity projects. Sue also brought a quilt that was given to her by her aunt. Sue’s mother, Bessie Garrett Stewart, who passed away when Sue was seven years of age, made the top. The top is a Diamond Field design and was made in the 30’s. Betty gave a report on the Friendship blocks that had been donated to the circle. She has not located any of the people who have their names on the blocks. She brought potholders and hot pads. She had also made place mats using the Chicken Soup pattern and a baby quilt. Jeane had pieced potholders and made two baby quilts. Susan has produced yearbooks containing photos and memories. These were done using computer programs. Susan’s husband bought a 1940’s Singer sewing machine for her. The machine is in great shape and has a wooden hump backed case. While in MO he bought a velvet lined hand carved box that the members loved. Allen has made place mats with appliquéd butterflies that he designed. He is also working on a Friendship Star quilt for his grandson. The quilt is navy and yellow, the colors of his grandson’s high school.

Sherry presented the program, bow making. She furnished the materials and taught us how to make bows for all occasions. The members collected donations for F.I.S.H. Susan and Cinda volunteered to take donations to Scottish Rite Hospital. Donations included: 4 baby quilts, 2 sets of place mats, 3 bunny dolls in baby quilts, 2 angels, 17 potpourri pots, 2 hot pads, 9 pot holders and 3 prayer rocks.

Cotton Blossoms

The Blossoms met May 21 for a fun swap-shop. Each member sorted through all their sewing notions and decided just which ones would never be used again or which ones we will never try to use. We combined our quilt and sewing treasures to see if any member had a use for them. Several took home new gadgets we didn’t know we even needed. We also arranged all our WIN pinwheel blocks to see how many more we needed. To our surprise, we had exactly enough for our twin quilt. Norlyn took them home to sew together. On June 4th we met again and pin basted the WIN quilt together. Show and Tell was fun and we were reminded to get our Ronald McDonald challenge quilts and our quillos for Boles Home completed. June 18th we will be starting individual Red Work projects. Come join us at 3:00 at the 1st Presbyterian Church, Commerce.

Cotton Strippers

The Cotton Strippers met for their June meeting at the church. Great refreshments were provided by Huey, Maejean, Barbara R., Pebble, Kay, and Annette. Sue gave the update for July retreat and all the myriad of assignments of what and what not to bring. Make sure if you are going, you have received the revised instructions and map. If you are a Stripper and are not attending retreat, there will not be a meeting on Thursday, July 12th. Sara brought 3 WIN quilts to be pin basted and different members took those quilts home to finish them up. Quilts should be returned to the next Guild meeting so they can be presented to the WIN directors. Michele Chitsey is collecting Betty Crocker box tops and Campbell Soup labels (the entire label) for her school class. It’s for "Boxtops for Education". Members adjourned to pin baste and when the thunderstorms started, everyone made a mad dash home.

Refreshments for August: Paula Bowman, Mary Lou Strohm, Maejean Nixson, Alice Cooney, Shirley Shaw, and Jane Martyn.

Sunbonnet Sues

The Sue’s met for their June meeting out at the home of Katharine McCaw. Members worked on individual projects

and we had a great show and tell. Katharine fixed wonderful blackberry cobbler. The July meeting is at Joan’s sewing room - look for directions via email and if you want to car pool, contact Sue or Kathy. August meeting location is not certain yet (Kay doesn't want to clean her house) -- will keep you posted.

Correction to Sunbonnet Sue minutes from last month. Kay did NOT stand corrected on how to play dominos. Kay did stand corrected on other items during the weekend.

Reminder

For those of you who signed up, The JACOBEAN HAND APPLIQUÉ WORKSHOP is July 7th from 9 am-- 4 pm at the church. If you have any questions, call Pebble at 972-442-3317.

WIN Quilt Update

The presentation of the WIN quilts, to the WIN shelter directors, will be made at this month’s guild meeting. The presentation will be at 7:00 pm. All of the WIN quilts need to be at the church before that so they can be arranged in a display for everyone to see. We are hopeful that someone from the newspaper will be there to take pictures.

Each quilt should have the special donation label on it, the one with the Cotton Patch Quilt Guild and WIN logos. Even if you have put a label of your own on your quilt, we would like all of the quilts to have the specific label designating the quilt as a donation from the Cotton Patch Quilt Guild to the WIN shelter.

If you don’t have one of the labels, or you have any questions, contact Sara Bobbitt.

Thank you

I wish to thank you all for the cards, calls, and well wishes, thoughts and prayers for me while I recently spent some time in the hospital. I am much better now and glad to be back. Special thanks to Maejean for the thoughtfulness of getting me a phone card so I can keep up with y’all! You are all special to me.

Sunshine and Shadow

Barbara Ratcliff was in the hospital last week with pneumonia. I’m happy to report that she bounced back quickly and was at Cotton Strippers Thursday night.

Vickie Dees’ granddaughter, Rachel, is continuing her recovery at home and is doing better.

Annette Swartz’s close friend, Dale, who lives in Tennessee, has had a severe reaction to the chemotherapy she received after having surgery for breast cancer.

Our thoughts and prayers are with each one of them and their families.

If you have any news for this column, please contact me and I will be sure to put it in the next newsletter. Thank you. Pam Hodapp

Attention Cotton Strippers

Due to the Summer Retreat at Lake Tawakoni, there will not be a Cotton Strippers circle meeting in July.

I Have A Question

I would like to find some fabric with the little old ladies. If anyone has this fabric, I would like to negotiate with them for a small piece.        Kay

The following poem was contributed by Sue Miller :

It’s Presentation Time

Our quilts are more than objects

for a quick dispassionate look

They’re pieces of love and memory

like a gift found in a book

Please let me tell my story

and tell you what it means

Without it all it’s not complete

and hides a piece of the dream.
