Dear CPQG Member,

The report for this month is that most of us will have a great time. The group that went to the Houston Quilt Show must have had a great time. They all came back exhausted, broke, all had sore feet, and a big smile on their faces. The next outing will be the winter retreat next week. I, for one, am looking forward to the trip. I wish all of you and yours a great Thanksgiving holiday. May everyone set this time aside for a time of thanks and remembrance of all that has come to pass this year. A smile for the good times and a prayer for the not so good times. I will close this month with the question: Have you hugged someone today?

Cotton Patch Quilt Guild

Regular Meeting, October 25, 2001

Kavanaugh Methodist Church, 6:30 pm

Forty-two members and seven guests of the Cotton Patch Quilt Guild met at Kavanaugh United Methodist Church at 6:30 pm. On October 25, 2001, Huey Nobles, presiding.

Business:

There was no report from the Design Committee.

Roberta Vanderburg was the winner of the UFO project fat quarters. Alice Cooney received a very special gift of fabric from Sherry Worley.

The treasurer reported that $1800 has been placed in a 10-month Certificate of Deposit at Cypress Bank in Commerce.

One book, Sunbonnet Girls, has been placed in the library.

Sue Childers reported that plans have been finalized for the Eufaula retreat in November.

Jane Martyn suggested asking Noble Walker, a local attorney, to speak to the guild at a future time, regarding incorporation.

The guild, years ago, had 501-C-3 designation. The relevant paperwork has disappeared and no one knows where it might be. Noble will pursue the mystery.

The following were appointed to an ad hoc nominating committee: Sara Bobbitt, Chair: SueMiller; Allen Day; B. Wood; Maxine Leverett, alternate. The committee will submit a proposed slate of officers for 2002-2003 in time to be included in the December newsletter.

Written ballots were distributed for members to vote whether to establish a scholarship with a portion of the $1800 being held in a CD. The motion was defeated 24 to 17, 1 abstaining. A new committee will be appointed next year and efforts to determine how to spend the money will resume.

Paula Bowman announced that her wedding date has been moved up to November 11. At the next Strippers meeting, November 8, members will cut and construct the friendship blocks for Paula’s wedding quilt.

Program:

Pebble Rehm introduced Lynn Welch, a Plano designer and award-winning quilter, who, through a slide presentation, took us through the transformation of her living room into a quilt studio. She shared many valuable suggestions for anyone contemplating creating a sewing room. We then had the opportunity to admire some of her work that appeared in the slides.

Show and Tell followed the program.

Door prizes were won by Barbara Ratcliff, Shelly Childers, Gladys Trammell, Mary Lou Strohm, Ruth Bacon, Elaine Sprague and Alice Cooney.

Guests are always welcome and invited to join the guild. Tonight’s guests: Sue Ross, Carol Clark, Shelly Childers, Barbara Hardy, Ann Barwick, Linda Bendall and Kay Dunn.

Respectfully,

Katharine McCaw– Recording Secretary

Sunshine and Shadow

Paula Bowman is getting married this Sunday, November 11th.

Congratulations, Paula and Randy!

Belva Isham’s husband, Robert, will be undergoing major surgery on November 12th at Baylor.

Our thoughts and prayers are with each one of them and their families.

 Cotton Belles

The Cotton Belles met at the home of Susan and Cinda Cross on November 5, 2001. The members brought donations items for F.I.S.H. and Scottish Rite Hospital. The donations included 7 angels, 7 pillows, 20 reindeer ornaments, 3 dolls with quilts, 6 teddy bears, 22 pot holders, 7 Santa dolls, 7 baby and miniature quilts, 11 crocheted items, 5 granny towel holders, and two large quilts. The Cotton Belles wish to thank Beth Winn, Dorothy Ford, Bonnie Longacre, Letha Lovell, and Chris Proffitt for their donations to these charities. Eight dollars and fifty cents was collected for F.I.S.H. Ministries. Susan will take the donations to Scottish Rite and Jeane will deliver the F.I.S.H. donations. Show and Tell: Nora brought a variation of the Dresden Plate and LaNell brought a Whirly Gig quilt. Both of these beautiful quilts were the result of mystery quilt classes. The fabric for both quilts was collected through charm exchanges. The patterns were found in "Short Cut Quilts" book in the Guild library. The program presented by LaNell was Continuous Bias Binding. The next meeting will be held at Sherry’s home on December 14, 2001. The January meeting will be held at Allen’s home. Susan will provide desert. Sherry will present a program on construction of pillow cases.

Cotton Blossoms

The Blossoms met October 15 to begin a group crazy quilt. Norlyn furnished printed muslin blocks and everyone brought scraps. We were knee deep in scraps but found that the next member had better scraps so a lot of trading went on. Some blocks were completed and the remaining ones were taken home to complete.

On the 29th we delivered 23 quilts to the Ronald McDonald House, for a total of 165 quilts given to Mickey D. Out of this group the house manager chose a rabbit quilt made by Viola Brummett to keep for a wall hanging at the house. We were shown all the new remodeling done in the past year. Then on to Farmer’s Market. We loaded the car with all the fresh fruits and vegetables we could and headed to the Green Papaya for a Vietnamese lunch. Of course no trip is over until a quilt store is visited so we checked out Suzy’s before heading home.

November 5th the Blossoms met to assemble the crazy quilt. It is truly a scrap quilt. We will have it ready to tack at our next meeting. It’s going to be a jolly one. This will be a seed quilt toward our next year’s donations. During this past year we donated a total of 41 quilts to Ronald McDonald House, New York, WIN and Boles Home. We also enjoyed Belva’s show and tell. What a producer she is!!

We meet again on November 19 when we will have a 10" fabric square exchange. Join us at 3:00 at the First Presbyterian Church in Commerce.

Cotton Strippers

The Cotton Strippers met to work on Paula’s wedding signature blocks on Thursday night. Most of the sewing work was done by the time the members arrived so several helped square them up and everyone signed a block. The "Wedding" will be Sunday and everyone is so excited for Paula. The Pajama Mama’s (or some of them) brought salad and dessert to go with the pizza that was ordered.

Secret Pal forms are ready for 2002. Don’t forget your final gift for your secret pal and all will be revealed. The December meeting will be held at the church and everyone is to bring a covered dish. No presents will be exchanged other than Secret Pal gifts. Members discussed refreshments for next year and the majority voted to keep the same system of light refreshments. We will complete the schedule for next year at the December meeting.

Sunbonnet Sues

Seven of the Sunbonnet Sue members, plus Pam Hodapp went to the Houston Quilt show. A good time was had by all. The hotel was great, the breakfast buffet was incredible. Jane had breakfast with Eleanor Burns and someone had breakfast with Nancy Zeiman. Well we didn't sit with Eleanor but they were at the table next to us---Does that count? Connie won the award for spending the most money and gets to keep the statue for a year. Jane was glad to give it up. We also met wonderful women from England and Canada. The quilts were fabulous and so was the shopping. Plans are already in the works for next year. The next meeting of the Sue's will be at the home of Sara Bobbitt.

Charm Squares Exchange

We will be cutting 26 Squares this month. The following is a schedule for the next year . Bring your new squares to Sue Childers and pick yours up if you were in last month’s exchange. There will be a sign up sheet for the next year. We are asking those interested in doing the exchange to commit themselves through January of 2002 so that we can prepare our fabrics according to a final count and be able to purchase them when they are on sale. Thanks.

" WANTED "

Conversation prints for "I Spy" quilts. I would like to make two twin size "I Spy" quilts for the WIN center. I will be using 6" finished blocks for the quilts. The conversation prints need to have the "picture" centered on a piece either 4 ½" or 6 ½" fabric. The 4 ½" pieces will have borders added to make them 6" finished blocks. I thought I could have a wider variety if I ask guild members to donate fabrics. Please bring the blocks to October Guild meeting, if possible. We want to get these made soon. Please give the fabrics to Sara Bobbitt, Maxine Leverett, Maejean Nixson or me. Thanks!

For the hay and the corn and the wheat that is reaped,

For the labor well done, and the barns that are heaped,

For the sun and the dew and the sweet honeycomb,

For the rose and the song and the harvest brought home - -

Thanksgiving! Thanksgiving!

For the trade and the skill and the wealth in our land,

For the cunning and strength of the workingman’s hand,

For the good that our artists and poets have taught,

For the friendship that hope and affection have brought - -

Thanksgiving! Thanksgiving!

For the homes that with purest affection

are blest,

For the season of plenty and well-deserved rest,

For our country extending from sea

unto sea:

The land that is known as the "Land of the Free" - -

Thanksgiving! Thanksgiving!

Ode to My Wife the Quilter

She learned to quilt on Monday.

Her stitches all were very fine.

She forgot to thaw out dinner.

So we went out to dine.

She quilted miniatures on Tuesday.

She says they are a must.

They really were quite lovely.

But she forgot to dust.

On Wednesdays it was a sampler.

She says stipling’s fun.

What highlights! What shadows!

But the laundry wasn’t done.

Her patches were on Thursday -

Green, yellow, blue and red.

I guess she was really engrossed;

She never made the bed.

It was wall hangings on Friday,

In colors she adores.

It never bothered her at all,

The crumbs on the floors.

I found a maid on Saturday.

My week is now complete.

My wife can quilt the hours away;

The house will still be neat.

Well, it’s already Sunday.

I think I’m about to wilt.

I cursed, I raved, I ranted,

The MAID has learned to QUILT!
