Dear CPQG Member,

I don't have a lot to talk about this month. I am in the same state of mind as most of the country. We have to rethink about our way of life since the senseless act of violence on the East Coast. Let's take this time to pray and reflect what we can do to help all the victims of this tragedy. I am sorry, but I am at a complete loss of words.

Peggy Lee

"Redwork"

Cotton Patch Quilt Guild

Regular Meeting, August 23, 2001

Kavanaugh Methodist Church, 6:30 p.m.

Huey Nobles presided as forty-nine members and five guests gathered at Kavanaugh United Methodist Church for the August 23 meeting of the Cotton Patch Quilt Guild. We welcomed Randy Talley, Luke and Dylan Cooper, Deanna Dotson and Michele Valdez.

Business: Pebble Rehm confirmed that the fabric dyeing workshop will be held Sept. 29, 9:00 - 1:00, here at Kavanaugh. She displayed the hand-dyed fat quarters from the July meeting and reminded us that these will be given away at the Christmas meeting. Paula Bowman reminded the Cotton Strippers that they will host

Solid Rock Cafe at Kavanaugh on Wednesday, Sept. 19. All food must be at the church before 5:15. Serving begins at 5:45. Paula also introduced her fiance, Randy Talley. Alice Cooney collected outstanding fat quarters for the UFO challenge, and reminded the membership that the challenge will end at the September meeting. Debra Hager reported for her committee. Since Katharine McCaw was not present, Debra asked that recommendations to the guild be tabled until next month. Debra Hager has submitted to the manufacturer the art work for the new guild pin. This year's Bois d'Arc Bash will be Saturday, Sept. 22. Annette Schwartz announced that we can mount another quilt show. Anyone interested should contact Annette. Set-up nights are Thursday and Friday, the 20th and 21st. Annette also announced the start-up of a Redwork group. The first meeting is Monday, Sept. 17 at 6:30 p.m., at Quilts on the Square in Commerce.

Program:

Guest Speaker, Paula Platter, entertained us all with " The Life and Times of Mr. Isaac Merrett Singer " Ms. Platter is a retired Algebra professor who became a quilter. Using a brief slide show, she demonstrated how she incorporates complex mathmatical skills into ornate works of art. Jane Martyn, Allen Day, Barbara Ratcliff, Sherry Worley and Maejean Nixson were among those with Show and Tell items. B. Wood proudly displayed her first completed quilt project - a beautiful pastel wall hanging. There were four lucky door-prize winners. Next month's meeting, on September 27, will feature Peggy Lee. The topic is "Redwork".

Respectfully

Debra Hager, Acting Recording Secretary

FRIENDSHIP CIRCLE NEWS:

Cotton Belles

September 10, 2001

The Cotton Belles met in the home of Nora Whitehead. A workday was planned to make Salvation Army Christmas stockings. Sherry Worley made a challenge: At the October meeting each member will bring two ugly fat quarters. These will be mixed and drawn by the members. The ugly fat quarters will be made into 12 ½ in unfinished blocks and submitted back to the circle. These blocks will be used to make a great quilt from ugly fabric. Show and Tell: LaNell brought her beautiful Mystery quilt made in a class given by Pebble. Allen brought his red, white and blue Pineapple quilt. Allen also brought a small quilt bought at the Plano auction. It was an appliqué horse made by Amy Chamberlain. Nora brought out an appliqué quilt top that contains lions in all of the blocks. Allen gave the program, showing us how to design and make computer generated quilt labels using bubble jet to print on fabric. The October meeting will be held at Jeanne’s house. John Miller will be the guest speaker. We will learn about Bonsai. The November meeting will be at Susan and Cinda’s house. LaNell will present the program on Bias Binding.

Cotton Blossoms

The Cotton Blossoms Circle met on August 20th for a regular meeting. We were glad to have Sue Childers stop by to show us her millennium bow tie quilt. The blossoms helped her get started on it by sharing fabrics from their stashes. Other show and tell included Joyce McCords bed buddy. She had lmade a small quilt using a stuffed animal, very unique. Sue also had a square in a square quilt to show that she will be teaching a class on at the quilt store. Lorene Leinart had more embrodiery designs completed and Nancy had a quilt she called cabin in the cotton made with 30's fabrics. Marylin showed us a new baby quilt she had made for a new great grandchild. The blossoms met again on September 3rd. Joyce McCord presented the program on different ways to make bias tape. After the demonstration we made a small Christmas ornament using the stained glass concept. This was in preparation for a program coming October 1st on stained glass which will be led by Joyce. We will be making a small angel wall hanging.

The Cotton Blossoms meet on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month at the Presbyterian Church on Monroe Street in Commerce. We would like to have you join us.

Cotton Strippers

The Strippers met on a devastating day in America’s history. It was a sad group the entered; but with the support of each other we had a short meeting and a lot of talk which helped us all come to grip with the tragic events of our country. We left knowing that our quilting friendships and love of our United States of America and all it stand for would only grow stronger in the face of adversity.

Refreshments for October will be brought by Joan Biggs, Connie Cawthon, Roberta Vanderburg, Elaine Sprague, and Barbara Ratcliff.

Sunbonnet Sues

Half of our members were out of town so we were a small but very elite group who made the trek up to Ladonia to Donna Moon's house on Sept. 6. Anna Knudson crashed the party - She had to come see how much fun we have! ( Alice Cooney had set the precedent last month at Maxine's. Wonder who it'll be next month!) After we all oohed and aahed over her beautiful new floors and gorgeous living room furniture, Donna treated us to Alena Helm's fabulous Broccoli-Cauliflower soup, topped off with the yummiest and richest chocolate dessert that Donna swears she made in 30 minutes ! ! ( Both of these recipes MUST be put in the newsletter!) We briefly flirted with the idea of starting up a block project, but the suggestion died very quickly, so we just visited, laughed, gossiped, worked on our own projects, watched the Hummingbirds at Donna's feeders and had our usual great time.

The next meeting will be at the home of Jane Martyn and we will discuss the Houston Quilt Show details.

 FABRIC DYEING WORKSHOP

Charm Squares Exchange

We will be cutting 26 Squares this month. The following is a schedule for the next year . Bring your new squares to Sue Childers and pick yours up if you were in last month’s exchange. There will be a sign up sheet for the next year. Thanks.
