Dear CPQG Member,
Can you believe it is time for all
the young ones, and not so young ones, to head back to school? Where has
the summer gone? Now that everyone has had a long, quiet, and relaxing
summer, we can get back to the grind. Since you all pulled the UFO's out
last month and looked them over, it is time to get organized and do
something with them. All I have been working on for the last several
months is a whole cloth. I hope to finish it in another month or two. This
months program is going to be interesting. Learning how to appraise our
quilts will help us to do better at piecing them. It's not too early to
start planning for the fall quilt shows and the fall migration to Eufaula.
I am looking forward to both this year. Relax, have a calming cup of hot
tea, smile and take care.

COTTON PATCH
QUILT GUILD
Regular Meeting,
July 25, 2002 Kavanaugh Methodist Church, 6:30 pm
Program:
Huey Nobles presided at the monthly meeting of the Cotton Patch Quilt
Guild at Kavanaugh United Methodist Church on July 25, 2002. Forty-one
members and three guests gathered to enjoy a delicious supper. It was
great to see Barbara Booth back among us. Norlyn’s daughter Angela was
one of our visitors and also previous member Conny Wright attended. Other
special news: Katharine McCaw is now driving, Michele’s son found a job
and Cara Erickson (previous member) had a baby girl.
*Betty
Day was volunteered to set up our quilt to sell chances at the Cotton
Jubilee in October. Huey and Jane both offered to help.
*A
jar was passed around for the library. Treasurer’s report stated we now
have a balance of $2,433.22.
*Fall
Retreat in Eufaula, OK is now open to Guild members. The cost is $40 for 4
days. The dates are November 14-17, 2002.
*Pebble
stated that at the last workshop, two tables were damaged from irons. They
will check to see if they can be fixed.
*Pebble
revealed what the mystery quilt will look like. She showed the small one
"Stash Investment" and a larger one-called "Mutual
Funds". Final instructions will be delivered at the next Guild.
*Pebble
announced the Seminole Patchwork workshop on August 24 at 9:00 am at the
church building.
*Pebble
announced that Lisa Engel would be doing appraisals for members before the
August Guild meeting. The cost is $30. Please let her know ASAP if you
want an appraisal.
*Sherry
Worley announced that the Aubrey Quilt Shop wanted us to send our Red,
White and blue Challenge wall quilts. Please bring them to the August
meeting if you would like them to be shown.
*Sherry
announced that the first group of charity quilts would be donated to the
Hunt Country Crisis Pregnancy. The membership agreed.
Show
and Tell followed with special emphasis given to Michele Chitsey and new
member Tracy Greenlee showing off their prizes from the July retreat.
Michele came in 2nd place and won a pacifier and $2, and Tracy
came in 1st for "Most Improved" quilter and showed
her "Bat out of Hell" that she won (plus $5).
Program:
Fran
Snay presented our program. She has been teaching the art of quilting
since 1989 to a wide range of students; from beginners to advanced
quilters. She spends much of her time encouraging new quilters, and
teaching them "color combinations" to more effectively present
their quilt creations as a work of art. Her quilts have been ribbon
winners in the Texas State Fair, and she has had quilts accepted for
display in the International Quilt Show in Houston. The quilts she showed
were just fabulous. For more information about Fran Snay, you can log on
to her website at: www.quiltsbyfransnay.com.
Respectfully,
Jane
Martyn (for Katharine McCaw)

Another
Red, White, and Blue Challenge
The
Rail Fence Quilt Shop is having a red, white, and blue Challenge. If you
would like to display your quilt Sherry Worley will pick them up at the
August Guild meeting and return them at the September Guild meeting.
Please make sure that the quilt is labeled (paper is OK) with your name,
address, phone number, and the name of the quilt. You may include a short
statement about the quilt if you wish. Prizes (gift certificates) will be
given. The actual dates of the challenge are September 3rd-7th
at Rail Fence Quilt Shop in Aubrey Texas.

This
year we're doing a different challenge. Choose any project, UFO or start
something new. In December we'll all bring our FINISHED projects to guild
and have our very own quilt show! Imagine eating dinner surrounded by
quilts. By the November meeting I'll need something jotted down about your
project--why you made it, if it was hard, etc. There will be a good
surprise for everyone that brings something! Remember, the quilt should be
unseen by the guild prior to the December meeting.
Alice

Community
Service
We
currently have 14 quilts to donate. You have all done a great job! The
quilts are fantastic. I especially like all of the individual touches that
you have used to distinguish your quilts. The Hunt County Crisis Center
has lost their office space so are not currently helping clients. There is
another center in Greenville that we are checking out, I will have more
information at the meeting.
We
will have a donation opportunity at the August meeting. We have many items
that have been donated by the Cotton Belles quilting circle. Items include
a great sewing basket, patterns, books, fabric, and more. Suggested
donations are $2 each or 3 for $5. Money raised will be used for supplies
for future community service projects.

Dear
Summer Retreaters:
I was totally surprised and it was unexpected that you all present me with
the thank you card filled with the means to go a dose of that long-arm bug
that has infected me. I plan to go this Wed. and quilt my mystery quilt
from our exchange and have it done for show and tell thanks to you
generous gift. Thanks so much I really enjoyed preparing for the retreat.
Pebble

I
received the following in an email regarding the email that I copied and
published in the July newsletter and thought I should pass this along too:
I
finally got around to reading the July newsletter about the internet
warning of test for ovarian cancer.
"We
need to be careful of internet stuff. The September 1, 2002 issue of Woman’s
Day magazine has an article of Health Myths Exposed! on page 32 and that
is one of the myths discussed. It may also be available online at
www.womansday.com. The article basically says that so many things can
cause a false positive that it is not a good screening
test." Pam

Hi.
This was posted on the HandiQuilter site. Thought you all might enjoy
it.
100 Ways to Hide Your Stash (Song by Cathy Miller on her "One
Stitch At A Time" CD)
He doesn’t have to know everything
A few secrets keep a marriage fresh as spring
I'll have it in, and out of sight in a flash
There are 100 ways to hide your stash.
Fill up the cupboard, hide the evidence
Pile it in the pantry spare no expense
Keep it with the kids' clothes, lay it with the wine
Keep it all together where the sun don't shine!
Put it in a Safeway bag, bring it in with the groceries
Call it "Christmas presents - and don't you peek!"
You're "keeping it for a friend" who's gone to Calgary
She'll be back soon - no there's none for me!
Don't tell him what you owe the store
He might start looking in the dryer or the drawer
It's an affliction breeding secrecy
These quilty pleasures that won't let me be
Pack it in the wardrobe, under the chair
Stack it with the linen, with the silverware
Cram it in the cellar, under the stair
With the winter clothes, with the underwear.
A woman stored hers in the ceiling overhead
For years it stayed there, overtop the bed
Her husband never ever heard a sound
Until the day it brought the ceiling down
He's got golfing and his auto parts
You've got fabric
He's got cigarettes and butter tarts
You've got fabric!
Pad it in a pillow, buy a bass violin
Cram it in a corner, tuck it in a tin
Turn off your freezer, fill up your bin
Unplug the oven, you can fit it all in
Buy a few quarters, while you're at the store
Get a little extra - more, more, more
Slip it in the mattress, hide it under the floor
No more room in here: buy the house next door!

FRIENDSHIP
CIRCLES
Cotton
Belles
The Cotton Belles met on August
5th at the home of Bernice Tipton. Sue Miller presented a
program on curved seam piecing. It certainly looked easy, but none of us
were brave enough to try it in front of an audience. Thanks to Sue for
showing us. We collected $14 for our donation to FISH and discussed items
to be donated to the FISH auction in the fall.
The September meeting will be on
the 16th (please note date change) at Sherry’s. Bernice is
bring dessert and Sherry will provide a soup and salad lunch. The program
will be a Mystery project. You will need to precut your fabrics, see
Sherry for a list. Bring your precut fabrics, thread to match, sewing
machine and basic sewing kit. You may bring your own rotary equipment or
use Sherry’s. You may work in pairs or teams, if you wish. In a team one
person can do the sewing and the other will prep, pin, press, and cut.
This is a great little pattern and will go quickly. You will be able to
start on the mystery as soon as you arrive so I you would like to come a
little early come ahead. If you need to carpool from Greenville please see
LaNell.
Cotton Blossoms
The
Blossoms met on August 5th for a regular meeting. We had 8 members
present. For Show and Tell Nancy had her Ronald McDonald challenge quilt
finished. Lorene had several purses that she has made and Madeline showed
us her two blocks from the Sat. at the quilt store. Belva had a wall
hanging and also presented Madeline with a lighthouse wall hanging for her
quilt farm. Joyce shared some pictures that Viola had sent of her house
and surroundings in Tenn. It really looks beautiful there. I know she is
enjoying it. Norlyn passed out tickets for the raffle quilt to be given
away at the Bash. We are raffling off the butterfly baby quilt to raise
money for our various children's projects. We will have tickets for sale
if anyone is interested.
Nancy
presented our program on Monday on making slap happy squares. It was fun
and the plan is for each member to make a block and put them together for
another quilt. We will meet again on August 19. Come meet with us at 3:00
p.m. at the Presbyterian Church on Monroe St. in Commerce. We meet on the
1st and 3rd Monday of each month.
Cotton
Strippers
The
Cotton Strippers met on Thursday, August 8, 2002. Members were treated to
a delicious beef stroganoff dinner and a fabulous chocolate sheet cake
with ice cream. We had one guest "Shug" who we hope will return.
If all the Border Bash quilts are not returned, the Torture Committee will
be calling you. PLEASE make sure you get them finished and passed to the
right person. Lisa Coker was volunteered (with some help from Debra) to
plan a block exchange or something like a holiday block exchange for the
December meeting. There is still time to sign up for November retreat.
2003 July retreat is now full. The dates are July 10-13, 2003 and the
price may have to go up since we are getting an extra day. More from
Pebble as it gets closer. Pebble was given a thank you card (with goodies
in it) from the Strippers to thank her for her hard work putting on the
retreat. Show and tell followed with our guest Shug showing her quilts
made from Monk cloth using Swedish Embroidery (like huck toweling) and
Debra showing her Texas Stack and Whack Sue showed several new items now
in at the quilt store.
Refreshments
for September will be hosted by Roberta, Elaine, Annette, Anna, Sara and
Maxine. October we will have pizza and play Quilt-O.
Sunbonnet Sues
The
Sunbonnet Sues met at the home of Maxine Leverett. Maejean
brought her oldest granddaughter Michele; Susan’s sister Amy was
visiting from Tucson; and Pebble brought her goddaughter Lilly (from New
Braunfels). Everyone had a good time visiting and getting to know our
guests and the refreshments were great. The next meeting will be held at
the quilt studio of Joan Biggs. Anyone wanting to car pool to
Farmersville, contact Jane (if she still isn’t working).

Note
to the Membership
If
it wouldn't be a problem, please do not wear heavy perfumes to Guild.
Several of our members are highly allergic. Thanks!
