Dear Members:
We have started another grand
year as a group. Just think of all the new projects we will start, all
the quilt shows we will visit, all the new people we will meet and
influence, and all the lives we will cross during this year. Sounds as
if all of us will have a busy and fulfilling time. Happy Birthday Cotton
Patch Guild! May we have many more. It's that time of the year again.
Please present any proposed changes to the guild bylaws to a board
member by the first of March. I want to take a few minutes to thank Sue
for all the work she does each season on the retreat. I think all of us
that attend appreciate the time and effort she donates to ensure the
retreat is a success. I am yearning for the time to by faster so I can
spend some quiet time there. For all of you that haven't yet attended
the retreat, you are missing a chance to mingle, work, meditate, and
just plain enjoy yourself. May all of you have a great and safe year.

Pebble’s
Surprise
Do
you remember that I said I was going to have a surprise for all of you at
the next guild meeting? I want everyone to bring an 8+1/2 inch square of
bleached or unbleached muslin and a black or brown pigma pen for a hands
on project. If you want to participate, you will need to have a half yard
total of the muslin but you only need to bring the one 8+1/2 inch square
to the February guild meeting.

UFO
CHALLENGE
This
year we're doing a different challenge. Choose any project, UFO or start
something new. In December we'll all bring our FINISHED projects to guild
and have our very own quilt show! Imagine eating dinner surrounded by
quilts. By the November meeting I'll need something jotted down about your
project--why you made it, if it was hard, etc. There will be a good
surprise for everyone that brings something! Remember, the quilt should be
unseen by the guild prior to the December meeting.
Alice

C&T
Publications will show many of the quilts from the special exhibit,
"America: From The Heart", that was at the Houston International
Quilt Festival, in its new 128 page book, "America from the Heart:
Quilters Remember September 11, 2001, to be released in May. All profits
from the book will be donated to the Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund.

Cotton
Patch Quilt Guild
Regular
Meeting, January 24, 2002 Kavanaugh Methodist Church, 6:30 pm
A full house gathered at Kavanaugh United Methodist Church at 6:30 p.m. on
January 24 for the monthly
meeting
of the Cotton Patch Quilt Guild. Welcome to two new members: Shelley
Childers and Jackie Clark. Jane Martyn introduced attorney, Nobie Walker,
who explained briefly the subject of incorporation. Since
much
more information needs to be considered before any action may be taken, a
motion was made and seconded that guild president, Huey Nobles, appoint a
committee to investigate the topic and report back to
the
guild. Motion passed.
Incoming board members were recognized and duly installed Martyn offered
for raffle a number of foam core display screens, tagged for disposal,
that she had retrieved from her office. Several lucky members went home
with potential design walls !
Sherry Worley continued to reward members who had fulfilled her challenge
for community service projects during 2001. This year we have two new
challenges! Sherry Worley has a Cotton Belles challenge for us! It
involves any project using red, white and blue. Projects will be displayed
at the May guild meeting and the winner(s) will be determined
by Viewer's Choice voting. Prize(s) will be awarded and the project(s)
will then be displayed at Quilts on the Square. Alice Cooney is also on
the Challenge Trail again! Her challenge requires a finished project that
has never been seen by the guild membership. A description of the project
must be submitted to Alice by November and the projects will be displayed
at the December meeting.
The guild agreed to serve Solid Rock Cafe at the church on Wednesday, May
15. A coordinator will be appointed.
Following a short explanation of several line items, the guild budget for
2002 was adopted. Debra Hager relinquished her keys to the Post Office box
to incoming treasurer, Connie Cawthon. Hager questioned the need to
maintain, at $30.00 per year, a post office box, since our volume of mail
is almost nil. No action taken.
Sara Bobbitt announced that Women In Need will hold Open House at their
new facility, on Sunday, January 27. We're all anxious to see the quilts
that the guild made and donated to WIN for their new shelter. Betty Day,
Design Committee chairperson, asked for volunteers to serve on her
committee.
Pebble Rehm, program vice-president, announced that her theme for this
year will be "Something For Everyone". Examples of the variety
of programs to be offered: A certified quilt appraiser on July 25; Paula
Platter's machine-applique workshop at the church on July 13; the choice
of a Mystery Quilt or a pattern-provided 2-day workshop, date to be
determined.
Show and Tell followed. Door prizes were won by Maejean Nixson,
KayColcleasure, Gini Keith, Annette Schwartz, Sue Miller, Shelley
Childers, Kathy Vestal and Alice Cooney.
After such a lengthy business meeting, our fun time for playing Quilto was
limited, but no less enthusiastic. Maestro John Martyn took charge of the
annual event. ( Sherry Worley's and Maxine Leverett's Quilto cards have
been retired.) Anyone interested in quilting is invited to join us on
February 28, when we will learn about the guidelines for entering a quilt
in the State Fair of Texas.
Respectfully,
Katharine

FRIENDSHIP
CIRCLES
Cotton
Belles
The Cotton Belles met on February 4, 2002 at the home of Susan and Cinda
Cross. The ugly fabric challenge blocks are due at the March meeting. The
remainder of the half square triangle exchange will be completed at the
March meeting. Sherry presented the program. The members watched a film on
constructing a Hugs and Kisses quilt. After the film, Sherry demonstrated
the technique of making the Hugs and Kisses 3 D quilt.
A
donation of $26.00 was collected for F.I.S.H.
Cotton
Strippers
The Strippers met on Valentines Day and had 2 visitors. The great
refreshments were hosted by Debra, Ruth, Michelle, Joy, Pebble, and
Shirley. The cobbler was great (we need that recipe). Sue gave an update
on March retreat. I know everyone is getting excited! If you did not pick
up the information, please give Sue a call or send an email. Some of the
information has changed, especially the "cleaning up too early on
Sunday" rule.
Katharine & Pebble have found us a wonderful place for a summer
retreat. Dates are: Thursday, July 18, (starting at 9:00 am) through
Saturday, July 20 (till 9:00 pm). It is about 5 miles out of Greenville
and sounds fabulous. $20 is needed to hold your place and there is a limit
of 30 people. More information to come.
Other news: Everyone should have gotten their new secret pal for 2002 and
some gifts were handed out. A basting day is scheduled at the church for
April 13. Annette has Dallas Quilt Show advance tickets for sale at the
shop. Roberta has a brand new granddaughter. Congratulations.
Border Bash – Jane turned over the Border Bash co-dictatorship to Kay.
Members showed their center blocks and then divided up into 3 groups. Can’t
wait to see these finished tops.
Refreshments for the March meeting (which we are having thanks to Anna
organizational skills) will be hosted by Sue, Jane, Donna, Huey, Kathy,
Connie Cawthon and Joan.
For those of you that have asked how you can help in the preparations for
March retreat, Sue could use some help either with last minute grocery
shopping, fixing the vegetables, packing the ice chests, etc. on
Wednesday, March 6 before retreat
Cotton
Blossoms
The Cotton Blossoms met early January 21st to make a surprise block from
30’s prints. Norlyn Quinn led the mystery block construction. After all
the pieces were cut, sewing began in steps to complete a butterfly. These
blocks will be combined for a Ronald McDonald Quilt. We enjoyed having
Lorene Leinart back. Lots of good show and tell. Secret Pal names were
exchanged and girl scout cookies eaten. This was a fun and productive
workday.
On February 4th the Blossoms met again and assembled all our
butterflies. After deciding placement and squaring up the blocks, Belva
sewed the strips together and others pressed. We were able to baste it
together and quilting will begin at the next meeting. Madeline and Norlyn
showed their block-of-the-month blocks. Upcoming workdays and programs
were discussed. Madeline and Belva will present our Feb. 18th
meeting.
Sunbonnet
Sues
A small group of Sunbonnet Sue's gathered at Pebble's (aka Jack) home
Thursday evening for a weekend retreat. Pebble fixed a great meal of
"Tootsoup" and we sewed until the wee hours of the morning.
Friday evening added a few more to the group and we watched the Olympic
opening ceremony while eating Katharine's wonderful tortilla soup. Both
were excellent. By Saturday there were eight quilters quilting (or
crocheting or sewing). A wonderful time was had by all and we really
appreciate Pebble's wonderful hospitality in sharing her home with us for
the 3rd year in a row.
