Dear CPQG Member,
Hi all. After the great spring we have been enjoying, the summer sure
is going to be a hot one. Now that the schools are on break and all the
extra activities planned for family and friends, it will be more of a
challenge to arrange time for all those projects that have been stacking
up all year. However, I have faith that you will find some time for the
good things. While out on the road trips, vacations, and visits to friends
and family, be careful and arrive in one piece. This month's program at
the guild meeting is going to be great and inspirational. I'm sure most of
your have heard of the quilt called "The Supper". If not, then
you are in for a real treat. A special congratulations goes out to Debra
Hager with her first place entry in the red, white, and blue contest.

"The
Supper"
Guild
members will meet in the basement for refreshments and at 7:15 will go up
to sanctuary for the program. The city has been invited, so Guild members
will have an area roped off in the front for them .
Don
Locke has been practicing general dentistry for 43 years. While working
full time he created his version of Leonardo de Vinci's "The Last
Supper". The Supper is Don's second quilt. His first quilt was made
using the same technical concept and featured himself and his wife Marilyn
in the quilted cloth.

THE
SUPPER QUILT by Donald Locke DDS
The
Supper Quilt. This monumental pieced quilt, composed of 51,816 half-inch
squares, is modeled on Leonardo de Vinci’s famous work, "The Last
Supper" (Milan, Italy). Dr. Locke worked on it for two and a half
years, first creating a computer generated image of the original, enlarged
to show pixels. He then selected, cut and sorted by color the 350
different fabrics used, including some of his own hand-dyed fabric. Other
hand-dyed fabrics are from Joy Press of Godley, TX. The pieces were
arranged on a design wall and then sewed together in strips, using a
Singer Featherweight sewing machine. It is 15.3 feet wide and 5.5 feet
high. After about 1200 hours of work, the emerging design became
apparent. The top was then machine quilted by Linda Taylor of Melissa, TX.
The machine quilting presented a new set of problems because of the size
of the piece, and because the image was not apparent to anyone working
close to the fabric. Linda states that it was the most challenging
quilting work she had ever done. The Supper Quilt was finished in
September 1999. For more information, you can go to the website:

COTTON
PATCH QUILT GUILD
Regular
Meeting, May 23, 2002
Kavanaugh
Methodist Church, 6:30 pm
Program
Huey Nobles presided at the monthly meeting of the Cotton Patch Quilt
Guild at Kavanaugh United Methodist Church on May 23, 2002. Thirty-five
members gathered to enjoy a delicious supper and listen to Jo Bowen as she
took us behind the scenes of the Creative Arts department at the State
Fair of Texas. Ms. Bowen has been a volunteer at the fair for eighteen
years, working in various areas of Creative Arts. Although neither a judge
nor a quilter, she explained the entry process and discussed the criteria
for classification, selection, display and judging. We were each given a
copy of the 2002 guidebook with entry forms for all divisions of Creative
Arts, and encouraged to enter this year's competition.
Business
Entries in the Red, White and Blue challenge were displayed along the wall
and Sherry Worley invited the membership to vote for a Viewers' Choice.
They were all so unique and beautiful and the selection of just one was
difficult. But Debra Hager's pictorial appliqué/patchwork of her father
and her participating in the Mt. Vernon Riding Club, entitled "Native
American Pride", was the #1 choice. All entries will now hang at
Quilts on the Square in Commerce. Sherry also asked that anyone
participating in the community service quilt project please complete a
survey form and a time log form.
The design committee is ready to select someone to machine quilt the
butterfly quilt.
Two former charter members of the guild are moving. Viola Brummit is going
to Tennessee and Mildred Young is relocating to New Mexico. Our best
wishes go with each of them.
Pebble Rehm announced a Seminole Patchwork workshop on Saturday, Aug. 24,
9:00 - 12:00, at the church. Cost
is $10.00. She has had thirty-one participants in the current mystery
quilt project. Cut-off date for taking part in this is June 13. She also
reminded us that the next guild meeting will feature "The
Supper", a traveling quilted wall hanging depiction of the Biblical
Last Supper. The public is invited.
Betty
Day has lost/misplaced a satchel of quilting supplies. It has "New
Orleans" on it. Anybody see this?
Pam Hodapp announced that anything for the newsletter should be sent to
her before June 11. After that date, send news to Jane Martyn for June
publication.
Alice Cooney gave us good news about Barbara Booth, who will begin chemo
treatments next week. We're all optimistic and praying for Barbara's
complete recovery.
The outstanding feature of Show and Tell this month was Taylor Hager's
first quilt, a "Stack n' Whack" . Following in her mother's,
aunt's and grandmother's footsteps, Taylor promises to be a blue-ribbon
winner!
Door prizes were awarded to seven lucky attendees.
Respectfully,
Katharine McCaw, Recording Secretary

MISCELLANEOUS
Community Service
Please
keep the suggestions coming. We
will have a few kits available at the meeting.
We have lots of tops ready for quilting and hope to have batting on
its way soon.
If
anyone has an old cell phone hanging around you can bring it to the June
meeting. We will be donating
cell phones (working or not) and their accessories to PhoneSafe.
They refurbish the phones and distribute them to women in shelters.
With a cell phone they can call 911 whenever they need police help.
Thank you,
Sherry Worley

UFO CHALLENGE
This
year we're doing a different challenge. Choose any project, UFO or start
something new. In December we'll all bring our FINISHED projects to guild
and have our very own quilt show! Imagine eating dinner surrounded by
quilts. By the November meeting I'll need something jotted down about your
project--why you made it, if it was hard, etc. There will be a good
surprise for everyone that brings something! Remember, the quilt should be
unseen by the guild prior to the December meeting.
