Dear CPQG Member,
Here we are again at the beginning of the summer days. Most of you are
probably starting to plan your vacation trips, visits to loved ones, and
the evening outings with your family and friends. Some lucky individuals
have just returned from the Paducah Quilt Show. I'm sure they enjoyed the
show, the shopping, and the companionship of all the quilters they met.
The program this month is just in time for all to learn how to enter their
special projects in the Texas State Fair. Maybe one of the guild's quilts
will make it to the show this year. I want to send Barbara Booth and
Barbara Ratcliff my prayers and best wishes. It's very hard to realize
that the people I care about are having such hard times. I know both of
them have a very positive outlook and will recover as good as new.

Speaker: Jo Bowen
"All
You Want To Know
About
Entering A Quilt In
The
Texas State Fair"
Jo
Bowen is from the Texas State Fair. She is a part of the team that plans and
makes the women's building activities work. She is going to tell us the
entire process of entering something into the state fair, plus how someone’s
entry is treated and handled while in their possession, etc.

Mystery
Quilt
I will
unveil the first of three patterns (one each month) starting at the April
guild meeting. The blocks are only 9 inches finished. The finished quilt
size is 54X54 with doing one 12 block exchange. There is a second quilt
pattern also presented at the end that is 72X72 or even a little larger if a
person wants to do a second 12 block exchange or add more blocks themselves.

Cotton
Patch Quilt Guild
Regular Meeting, March 28, 2002
Kavanaugh
Methodist Church, 6:30 p.m.
The
monthly meeting of the Cotton Patch Quilt Guild convened at Kavanaugh United
Methodist Church at 6:30 p.m. on April 25, 2002, Huey Nobles, presiding.
Thirty-six members attended, as well as guests Randy Talley and Tracy
Greenlee. Nancy Nall joined our guild and former members Janice Bennett,
Marilyn McGill and Paula Talley renewed their memberships.
Business
Randy Talley, representing the Chamber of Commerce, presented an opportunity
to the guild to participate in this year's Cotton Jubilee. The front porch
of the Ende House, on the Cotton Museum grounds, is available, without cost,
for us to set up a quilting frame, give demonstrations, sell raffle tickets
or anything else we decide to do. No action was taken. Further discussion at
a future meeting. Treasurer, Connie Cawthon, reported a current balance of
$2,925.90. The Design Committee displayed the second Butterfly quilt top,
which is finished and ready to be quilted. Three books have been added to
the library. Tonight's collection brought in $31.96 for library purchases.
Paula Talley reminded us that we will be serving a salad supper for Solid
Rock at the church on Wednesday, May 15. Katharine McCaw sent around a
sign-up sheet. Entries for the Red, White and Blue viewer's choice challenge
must be received by Sherry Worley by May 1. Completed items will be brought
to the May meeting and then, (with artist's permission) hung or displayed at
Quilts on the Square in Commerce. Sherry brought additional kits for
community service quilts. There is no deadline for completing these items. A
possible fund-raiser for financing this program was mentioned. No decision
made. Sue Childers brought with her and offered for sale an electronic
Viking sewing machine.
Pebble Rehm asked whether there was sufficient interest to schedule a
workshop on Seminole Patchwork. Pebble needs 12 participants for a 3-month
mystery quilt. Instructions for the first month's block, a four-patch, were
available tonight.
A second session of Paula Platter's Machine Applique workshop will be
offered on Friday, July 12 at the church. There are still a few openings
remaining. As expected, our guild members made an excellent showing at the
Terrell Quilt Show.
Show and Tell was followed by Door Prizes. Your secretary was distracted and
failed to record names. Sorry.
Program
Jenna Oke, a native of Nigeria, member of the Allen Guild and an art teacher
in the Allen ISD, presented one of the most unusual programs we've ever had.
She showed us the quilts that comprise her Master's thesis, a series of six
that represent the areas of our lives that take place in or on the bed.
Oke's unusual techniques involve the use of many untraditional materials,
original fabrics that she created, and are an expression of deep and
personal inspiration.

Cotton
Belles
The Cotton Belles met at Walworth Harrison Library. Carol Taylor, a
genealogical librarian, presented a program on genealogical and local
history. The program included outlines on Civil War records, U.S. State
papers, death records and many other topics. Thirty dollars was collected
for FISH. A $285.00 donation was made to Hospice in memory of Verna Esters,
Bernice's mother. Show and Tell: Jeane brought a quilt that will be donated
to ABC and Bernice brought the snow men candy jars that will be given to
FISH for a benefit.
Sue will present a program on curved piecing at the June meeting. We will
have a raffle basket available.

Cotton
Blossoms
The Blossoms met on May 6 for a regular meeting. We laid out our blocks
for the stack and whack quilt and it is looking pretty cute. We plan to set
it together next meeting. It was good to have Francis Stinnett back with us.
She had been busy in Temple and had a big quilt and a couple of baby quilts
for show and tell. We are also getting some of the blocks back from our ugly
fat quarter challenge. I forgot last time to thank the Belles for the idea,
it has been fun. It will be interesting to see what kind of quilt we come up
with. We are planning a going away party for Viola Brummett on June 3rd.
Viola and Don will be moving to Tennessee where Don will be a full time
Pastor. We will miss them but our loss will be Tennessee's gain. We would
like to invite anyone that would like to say good bye to Viola to come by
for the party. We will meet at the Presbyterian church in Commerce at 3:00.

Cotton
Strippers
The Cotton Strippers crowded together around two tables for their monthly
meeting. Several members were still at the mountain. Refreshments were again
incredible! Jane passed around a get well card for Barbara Booth. Please
keep her in your thoughts and prayers. She also reminded everyone about the
Guild’s participation in Solid Rock this coming Wednesday night.
Katharine, due to have knee replacement surgery in June, reminded everyone
about July retreat. The menu for the retreat is Thursday –Salad Supper,
Friday-Cookout and Saturday – casserole. Time for the retreat is 9 am
Thursday to 9 pm Saturday. She also reminded everyone that the church is
having a Red, White & Blue bazaar on Saturday the 17th from 9
to 2 pm. Katharine was going to check for a Saturday in June for a circle
basting day. However, if there are only a few quilts that need basting, we
will do them at the circle meeting over several months. Jane reminded
everyone of the Hunt County Fair coming up June 8. Susan reminded everyone
that Fall Retreat sign-up is now going on. Show and tell followed and
Barbara R’s announcement had everyone in hysterics. Then Debra’s
daughter Taylor, age 13, showed her first quilt that she completed. It was a
beautiful "stack and whack". More show and tell followed including
Annette’s new summer haircut and all of the border bash projects. Only one
more month to go and they are all looking so great!
Refreshments for the June meeting will be provided by Kay, Annette, Mary
Lou, Anna, Maxine and Maejean.
No drinks are needed at this time.

Sunbonnet
Sues
The
members of the Sunbonnet Sues met at the home of Maejean Nixson. A
trip to the mountain for the weekend followed.

MISCELLANEOUS

This year we're doing a different challenge. Choose any
project, UFO or start something new. In December we'll all bring our
FINISHED projects to guild and have our very own quilt show! Imagine eating
dinner surrounded by quilts. By the November meeting I'll need something
jotted down about your project--why you made it, if it was hard, etc. There
will be a good surprise for everyone that brings something! Remember, the
quilt should be unseen by the guild prior to the December meeting.

Community
Service
Thanks
to everyone who has taken a kit to make for Community Service projects. We
should start seeing finished quilts soon. If you were one of the lucky ones
who got a certificate for a Quilts on the Square coupon you must return a
fully finished quilt to receive your coupon. If you did not get a coupon
from Quilts on the Square in your kit you may bring back the kit with only
the top finished. There will be kits available in several stages of
completion. If you like to piece then do only the top. If you like to quilt
then do only the quilting. I even have one generous person who has
volunteered to do bindings!
There will be a survey card at the
Community Service table at the May meeting. We would really appreciate you
taking a few minutes to fill one out. The questions will relate to fund
raising and distribution of quilts. We would really like your thoughts.
I am beginning to get some input
about the kits and instructions. If you have any other suggestions please
pass them on to one of the committee members. Those members are Sherry
Worley, Sue Miller, and Lisa Coker.
Thank
you,
Sherry
Worley

Terrell Heritage Jubilee Quilt Show
The Quilt Show was a great success and Greenville guild members who won
ribbons included Allen Day, Barbara Booth, Beth Winn and Mary Lou Strohm.
Many thanks to all who entered quilts. There were so many positive comments
about the beautiful quilts. Three raffle quilts were displayed and sales
were brisk. Over 1,000 people attended the show. We look forward to even
bigger and better next year! Thanks!
Barbara Booth

Red, White, and Blue
Challenge
Remember to bring the
finished quilts to the May meeting for the Viewer’s Choice voting. If you
have entered a quilt please try to have it at the meeting by 6:00. This will
allow us to put on its entry number and hang it before the meeting starts.
We hope to start voting by 6:20 and the winner will be announced before the
meeting is adjourned. Special Thanks to Quilts on the Square for sponsoring
our Viewer’s Choice award.

The
next Newsletter Deadline will be Monday, June 17, 2001.
