COTTON
PATCH QUILT GUILD
Regular
Meeting, October 24, 2002 Kavanaugh Methodist Church, 6:30 pm
There
was a great turnout for the Skills Night meeting at Kavanaugh United
Methodist Church on October 24, 2002.
Sorry I didn't get the exact number from the sign-in sheet before it
disappeared. We welcomed five guests - didn't get their names either ! ! -
and hope they'll return.
Our guild is truly fortunate to have such talent right in our midst! Even
the most experienced of the group learned something new. The seven
presenters were Jane Martyn demonstrating perfect circles; Donna Moon, who
showed us how to press rather than iron, Allen Day showing how to apply a
correct binding, Sherry Worley and foundation piecing, Ruth Bacon making a
dimensional Bow-Tie, Mary Lou Strohm demonstrating a reversible Log Cabin,
and Sue Childers showing dimensional Flying Geese. They had only ten
minutes to enlighten each of the seven groups that rotated among the
teachers, but they were well prepared and organized and all went very
smoothly.
BUSINESS
Sherry Worley made a correction to last month's minutes. The baby quilts
are a Community Service project of the entire guild, not merely the
Belles.
Pebble Rehm reminded us of the "$5.00 or handmade" guideline for
the Christmas gift exchange, which will be the THIRD Thursday in December.
She will surprise us again with a Make and Take project. We are to bring a
needle with an eye large enough for crochet thread. Pebble also asked for
flat buttons, 1" to 1 1/2" in diameter.
At the November meeting Alice Cooney must have a brief description of the
completed UFO projects that will be seen for the first time at the
December meeting. Only one project allowed! And it must be totally
completed.
Betty
Day displayed the first, of two, Butterfly guilts we plan to raffle..
The guild will host Solid Rock at the church on Wednesday, May 14, 2003.
Katharine McCaw asked for a volunteer to coordinate.
A nominating committee was named: Betty Day, Jane Martyn and Shelly
Childers. The proposed slate of officers must be published in the December
newsletter.
There will be no Cotton Strippers meeting in November. Everyone will be at
Retreat!
Following Show and Tell, door prizes were won by the following: Mary
Morris, Lindy Hammons, Sue Childers, Barbara Buck, Huey Nobles, Pat Jonz,
Donna Moon and Mary Lou Strohm.
Remember, the November meeting is the THIRD Thursday. Katharine McCaw will
present a program of historical quilts from the DAR Museum in Washington,
D.C.
Respectfully,
Katharine McCaw

The
F.I.S.H. Food Pantry is in desperate need of canned goods. They would also
appreciate monetary donations. Please help if you can. Thank you.
Alice

Community
Service
We are
having a used magazine/book/pattern sale to support our Community Service
effort. All items will be $1.00. If you have intact magazines that you
would like to donate please bring them to the Guild meeting. There are
quilting magazines, cookbooks, and general craft magazines . . . something
for everyone!
Please
check to see if you have a coupon (given in kits only during the first two
months of Community Service) for a gift certificate to Quilts on the
Square. If you have one of the three missing coupons PLEASE see Sherry
Worley even if you are not finished with the quilt.
Thanks
to everyone who has donated fabric! We are going to start storing some of
it at the church. If you need something to make a donation quilt from your
own pattern please see Sherry Worley, Sue Miller, or Lisa Coker. We may
have just the fabric that you need.
We would
like to make another donation of quilts before Christmas. If you have
suggestions of who could use a few quilts please let us know. We could
also use a few more quilts to make a really nice donation, so keep sewing!
Hunt
County Shared Ministries (FISH) is having a fund-raiser bar-b-que
lunch/dinner and silent auction on November 22 at Wesley Methodist Church
in Greenville. Catering is by Ernies B-B-Q, $8 per plate, served 11:00 to
1:00 and 5:00 to 7:00. Please call 455-0545 for more information. Donation
of items for the silent auction should be delivered to Wesley Methodist on
November 21.
The
Cotton Belles are collecting small items that could be used as gifts for
the elderly. These gifts will be given to Salvation Army in Greenville to
be used during December. If you would like to make a donation please bring
it to the November meeting. We will be happy to see that it gets to the
right place.

FRIENDSHIP
CIRCLES
Cotton
Belles
The
Cotton Belles program for October was presented by Susie Hughes, the
daughter of Sue Miller. Susie is the owner of Sweet Susie's Herbals. She
instructed us on the basics of her pure and natural home made soap. We
learned the ingredients that she uses in her soap. We also learned some
soaps soothe the nerves.
Susie's
email address is: ssherbals2002@yahoo.com
The
Cotton Belles met at the home of Bernice Tipton for the November meeting.
The members discussed donation projects. The FISH donations need to be
turned in by Nov 21. The FISH BBQ and auction is November 22 at Wesley
United Methodist Church. The serving times are 11 - 1 and 5 - 7. A work
day was set to work on Salvation Army stockings. The circle has donated: 3
scare crows, 2 Christmas candy jars, 12 snowman candy jars, 3 wreaths, 3
dressed dolls, 4 snowman ornaments, 4 pot holders, 20 teddy bears, 5
rabbits, 2 baby quilts, 3 miniatures, 1 quilt and three fuzzy covers. The
program was presented by Bernice. We saw the Pin Wheel table runner in
each stage of its construction. The December meeting will include lunch at
the Durning House in Van Alstyne. Sherry will be making reservations,
please call her if you are not already on the list and want to attend.
Cotton Blossoms
Cotton
Blossoms made their annual trip to the Ronald McDonald House Oct. 21st to
deliver the 18 quilts they made throughout this past year. After touring
and visiting at the house we enjoyed lunch at Central Market. We all found
some delicacy we could not resist. Then on to the Quiltmaker and Suzy's
Quilt Store. This was as great road trip.
On
November 4th we met to assemble the "ugly" blocks we had made
and seemed to try to forget. After spreading them out and putting a
sashing on them we found them to be quite desirable. We were pleasantly
surprised and felt a bit guilty about the things we had said about those
pretty blocks. We also had a good show and tell and Norlyn presented
Madeline with her wall hanging made for her Quilt Farm.
Our
meeting on Nov. 18 will be a workday and we will begin at 2:00.
Cotton
Strippers
There
will not be a Stripper meeting in November due to many of the group being
at retreat.
Wednesday,
December 11, the Strippers will participate in Solid Rock at the church. A
sign-up sheet was sent around and given to Katharine. Please have your
dish up to the church by 5:00 p.m.
We
will be playing Quilt-O at the December meeting so bring a fat quarter for
every card that you want to play. Also Secret Pals will be revealed so
don’t forget to bring that very important last gift.
Refreshments
for the December meeting will be brought by the group. Pot-luck for
everyone.
Sunbonnet Sues
Members
of the Sunbonnet Sue group met at the home of Jane Martyn. Guests included
Pam H., Donna Hall and Maxine D from Paris.
The members discussed the upcoming trip to Houston including
logistics, planning dinners and transportation.
Sue brought a fruit breakfast dish to try in case she wanted to
serve it at November retreat. The November meeting will be at the home of
Katharine McCaw.

Note
to the Membership
If
it wouldn't be a problem, please do not wear heavy perfumes to Guild.
Several of our members are highly allergic. Thanks!
