A day without fabric, is like a day without sunshine!

Letter from the President

Dear Quilters,

Well, what does each of us have to show for our summer? A great tan?  Dropped a few pounds from all that yard and garden work?  Wonderful memories and snapshots of a great family vacation?  A pantry stocked with home grown and canned produce? (Does anyone do that anymore?))   And just maybe a quilt project or two!

Personally, I have finally finished my Stack-n-Whack top. (Don't ask when it will be quilted!)  This is the one that Pebble helped me cut out  - how many retreats ago?  But isn't it a great feeling to strike one of those UFOs off the list? Now if I were really smart I'd start in on some of the others collecting dust on the shelf. But that's not a quilter's mind set, is it?  That's too logical!  So, of course, I've spent the last week cutting out a brand new quilt!

We have some exciting events planned for the Fall. This month's program about textiles from India will be wonderful. Gwen Schroth grew up in India and will surely have some fascinating stories for us as well as some fabrics that you won't find in any of our quilt shops.  Then, if you're a garage sale groupie, you won't want to miss the October meeting. Remember what they say about one man's trash. Who knows what treasures you'll  find. And it's not too early to begin going through those patterns that simply jumped off the shelf at us, and the books and gadgets that we couldn't live another day without. The more room we make in the sewing room, the more we can justify filling it up again!

Piecefully,
Katharine

August Guild Meeting

August 28, 2003

6:30 pm

Speaker: Gwen Schroth

The program for the August 28th Guild meeting will feature fabrics from India. Cotton Patch Quilt Guild member, Gwen Schroth, will show slides of her recent trip to India, where she spent several weeks exploring the rich fabrics of the area. Samples of quilts made by an Indian women's cooperative will be on display, as well as clothing and fabrics from various parts of India. Come prepared to journey to the other side of the globe!

Reminder!! Start going through your sewing room for items for the upcoming garage sale. Price them yourself— we won't be doing any pricing the night of the sale just putting them on tables. If you have pricey items for the silent auction, contact Pebble before hand for special handling.

Any one willing to help with the sale also contact me.

Pebble Rehm, Program Chairman

Just a Few Minutes...

The regular meeting of the Cotton Patch Quilt Guild met at the Kavanaugh United Methodist Church, July 24, 2003, in Greenville, Texas. After the social which began at 6:30 p.m., President Katharine McCaw opened the meeting at 7:00 p.m. by thanking the hostesses for the food served, and by welcoming ten guests who were introduced by their host members as: Linda Black, Cynthia Lane, Julie Spangler, Laurie Anderson, Peggy Way, Karen Gorman, Alice Keith, Melonee Gandy, Jeff Sheffield and Mary Ruth Lane. Fifty-three members were present. Five door prizes were awarded by Sherry Worley, assisted by Alice Cooney. Seven more door prizes were presented later in the meeting, following the program and intermission.

Program Chairman, Pebble Rehm introduced Julie Spangler from the Gainesville area who presented the evening’s program entitled “Bible Quilts.” Show and Tell had 10 participants other than Worley: Debra Hager, Michelle Chitsey, Betty Hammack, Cotton Belles, Rehm, Donna Moon, Jane Martyn, Jake Sheffield, Pam Hodapp, Betty Day, and Madeline Sullivan.

President McCaw took officer and committee reports in the business session. Librarian, Sue Childers asked members to check the June newsletter for list of books donated or purchased since January. She thanked Amon Nixson for his contribution of $117.50 to the library fund . This was earned selling big boards and iron holders which Nixson makes. Gwen Schroth and the entire Design Committee showed the newly pieced 36-block patriotic raffle quilt for 2004. The quilt goes to be hand quilted within the week.

No report from the treasurer, Connie Cawthon.

Worley opened Show and Tell with Community Service committee report. Donation crib quilts were shown and then presented to Cynthia Lane, a pediatric nurse from the Greenville Community Health Center. Lane responded with thanks and stated that the center serviced about 150 people per year with a huge portion of those clients requiring prenatal services. She emphasized the level of poverty of many residents in the Hunt County area, comparing it to that of a “third world country”. In addition, Worley’s committee donated two quilts to the Kavanaugh United Methodist Church “ Krafty Kritters” for their October bazaar. Maxine Leverett’s name was drawn as the winner of the raffle basket. Revenue for the raffle basket was $75.00.

Rehm gave a report on the Summer Retreat announcing several winners of special awards. Winners were Lisa Coker and Jane Asberry for completing the most projects. Twenty-one attended the retreat. Next year’s Summer Retreat will be held July 8 - 11. A five dollar deposit is now is now being taken to reserve a place. Only 30 places are available due to limited space. Sue Childers announced November 13 - 16 as the date for Fall Retreat at Lake Eufaula, Oklahoma. Fees are $30 for three nights and $45 for four nights. Rehm reminded the members of Skills Night at the November Guild meeting and asked for six volunteers for the night. The Christmas Challenge is at the December meeting. The Garage Sale is in October. Items for the sale should already be priced and brought in prior to the social hour.

Rehm also announced the opening of a new quilt shop at 234 North 4th Street in Wills Point, August 1, 2003. President McCaw adjourned the meeting at 8:50 p.m. reminding members to keep Shelly Childers and Moon’s daughter, Brenda in their prayers, specifically asking for healing.

For all of us who are fans of Simply Quilts on HGTV. Ami Simms announced in her latest newsletter that HGTV will not be airing Simply Quilts in an afternoon timeslot. Beginning Sept. 29 it will only air in the morning (7:30 in our area). You may contact HGTV through their website at www.hgtv.com. We may not be able to change their minds about this schedule change but we can voice an opinion. Who knows we may have an impact. After all the toilet tissue people no longer use ads with knitting needles to advertise their "quilted" product.

Design Committee

The patriotic quilt, titled What America Means to Me, is pieced and has been delivered to the quilter. The quilt is absolutely beautiful! We used dark blue sashings and red setting blocks, bringing the 36 blocks nicely together. We are asking the quilter to complete it by November.

In the next few weeks we will be making copies of the picture of the quilt and printing up the raffle tickets. The expectation is that it will be raffled next year, giving us plenty of time to sell lots and lots of tickets. The Design Committee is proud to have been able to keep the cost well under the allotted $100 for piecing!

Gwen Schroth

Can anyone lend a hand?

A local lady, Jean Martin, is looking for someone to complete the hand quilting on a full-sized quilt begun by her mother-in-law.   Ms. Martin estimates the quilting is 2/3 complete. For more information, call 903-455-1176. This might be a project for a circle or small group.

Friendship Circles

Cotton Belles

We met on August 4th in the small dining room. Our monthly donation to FISH for the month of July was $28. The donation for August was $67. FISH is in desperate need of donations, please keep them in mind. We got to show off and photograph our beautiful stocking quilt after getting it back from Vickey Dees who quilted it. We discussed making bunk quilts for The Samaritan Inn in McKinney. Kits will be available at the September meeting. Thanks to The Cotton Patch Quilt Guild Community Service, and Sherry Worley for the fabric and to Kaye Dunn for cutting kits. Work was started on the Santa's that will be donated to the FISH auction. Next month we will still need to be cutting, some gluing and some sewing. We hope to get them finished in September without having to add an extra workday. Show and Tell included Kaye’s baseball quilt top, Jeanne’s beautiful painted butterfly mini quilt for FISH (BIDDING WILL BE EXCITING!), and Sherry’s Handy Andy quilt. If I have missed anything I apologize…one of these days I will learn how to take notes! Kaye presented a program on pillowcases that featured a neat trick to encase the seam made by attaching the flange and pillowcase cuff. The September meeting will be on the 8th because of Labor Day. We will begin at 10:00, Kaye brings dessert and we will work on the Santa's. We welcome all visitors!

Cotton Blossoms

On August 4, the Blossoms enjoyed an entire meeting of great show and tell. What a fun meeting we had. Nancy and Carolyn McFarland brought quilts that came down through the family that were made by grandmothers and aunts, one of which is presently 101 years old. Her last quilt was made at the age of 80. In addition to the quilts, they had letters accompanying the quilts that gave a history of who and when they were made. The workmanship, condition and colors were wonderful. We then shared with them our challenge quilts and any other quilted items we had completed. Belva had a quilt just acquired from a cousin that had been made for her by Belva's mother. Such great treasures! We meet again on the 18th for a sit 'n sew.

Cotton Strippers

The Strippers met for their August meeting and had one visitor, Mary Welch, who became a Guild member also. After a wonderful food fest, we began by discussing making a top for the Samaritan House in McKinney. Members who can meet early will meet at Lisa Coker’s home to work on the top for the Samaritan House. The size is 60’ x 90’-bunk bed size. If you have a top to donate, contact Jane. Our September meeting will be held at the home of Carolyn Burt in Fairlie. Directions were handed out and will be emailed to everyone with email. Carolyn’s phone is 903-886-6496 if you want to call. Those in charge of refreshments for the meeting at Carolyn’s are Katharine, Connie C., Donna, Barbara, Huey, Tracy and Sharon.  Anyone wishing to car pool will meet in the church parking lot at 6 pm to drive to Fairlie.

The new shop in Rockwall offered to host one of our meetings. In October we will try to go visit Quilt Works then go out to dinner. Sounds like fun! More on this as arrangements are finalized. Sign up is going on for Fall Retreat. Katharine is taking $5 deposit for July 2004 summer retreat. Only a few spots left! Jane has a few openings if you are interested in going to the Houston Quilt Festival in November. We will be staying at the Marriott Residence Inn and the room holds 6 with a full kitchen. Contact Jane if you are interested. The circle signed up for Solid Rock at the church for February 11.

Sunbonnet Sue

The Sunbonnet Sue group met at the home of Kelli Rial, Sara Bobbitt’s daughter. After a tour of the fabulous new home with an incredible wrap-around porch, Sara treated us to a wonderful salad supper. Plans were made to make a twin size top at the September meeting for the Samaritan House in McKinney. The Fellowship Hall at the church is reserved for our next meeting from 6-9 pm. Everyone is to bring their 5 and 6 inch squares, machines and tools to work on a top.

Good friends are like stars...you don’t always see them, but you know they are always there.!

Community Service

We were very pleased to present 12 baby quilts to Cynthia Lane of the Community Health Center on Wesley in Greenville. Cynthia will be very pleased to accept donations of any baby/ toddler related items and can be reached at (home) 903 455 7210 or (cell) 903 408 7002. She tries to assist 30 to 40 babies per month on a budget of $800-$1000 per year. Her efforts are funded by her Sunday School class, the W.M.C. at her church, friends, and herself.

We were also very happy to present 2 baby quilts to Katharine McCaw for the Critters bazaar later this fall. To date Community Service has donated 24 quilts to area groups, and we already have several more that are ready to be donated. Thank you to all that have participated! With your help we can make a difference in the lives of others.

The Community Service Raffle basket raised $89 for books for the Greenville Public Library. Thanks to Lisa Coker, Kaye Dunn, Sue Miller, and Sherry Worley for donating the basket and contents. Books will be purchased at wholesale and donated sometime in early September. We will still accept books at the August meeting if anyone would like to donate. Next month we will publish a list of the titles which have been donated in the name of The Cotton Patch Quilt Guild. Each book will contain basic information about the Guild. Thank you to Beth Winn for this wonderful idea. We would like to see this continued into the future by selecting a different library each year.

The Quilt Asylum in McKinney request our help with their “Comforts of Home” Quilt project. They are spearheading the effort to provide 100 60” x 90” bunk quilts for The Samaritan Inn in McKinney. The Samaritan Inn is a men’s, women’s, and family shelter and will house 150 people when it opens in November. If you are interested please contact Sherry Worley for specifics. We have plenty of fabric for you to use.

From Jane Martyn...

One Sunday after church, Mom asked her very young daughter what the lesson was about. Her daughter answered, "Don't be scared, you'll get your quilts." Needless to say, Mom was perplexed. Later in the day, the Pastor stopped by for tea. Mom asked him what that morning's Sunday school lesson was about. He said "Be not afraid, the comforter is coming."

Please remember when you're making Christmas gifts (you have already started, haven’t you?!), the guild wants to see an example at the December meeting. Big or small (I'm counting on y'all to inspire me for Christmas '04!). Also, remember we can enjoy your homemade gifts made from copyright material but don't re-write or reproduce those instructions. Got questions? Call Alice Cooney.

Executive Board Meeting Minutes

The Cotton Patch Quilt Guild Executive Board met at the Cracker Barrel Restaurant, Greenville, Texas, July 21, 2003, 6:30 p.m. Board members present were Katharine McCaw, Pebble Rehm, Sue Childers, Tracy Greenlee and Carolyn Burt.

President McCaw took reports from officers and committee chairmen. Treasurer Connie Cawthon was not present , and provided no report. There was concern expressed by the board members present that Cawthon had not produced the 2002 books for audit and had not provided a treasurer’s report for the newsletter in four months. ( By-laws: Art.6.10.2) After further discussion it was the consensus of the board that Cawthon produce the books to President McCaw by Thursday, July 26. Otherwise, the board authorized President McCaw to request copies of the 2002 statements from Alliance Bank to reconcile the status of the treasury.

Membership Chairman Pam Hodapp’s report was sent to and presented by President McCaw. To date, and after total expenses for directories, supplies, etc., the membership budget shows a $6.64 deficit.

Program Chairman Rehm reported that due to changes in programs this year, and after the budget was already established, there will be a surplice of year-end funds. She proposed that a lapel microphone system be purchased . The board gave the nod to President McCaw to make the purchase. Cost of the system is estimated at $150.00. Year-to-date expenses for the program committee is $485.00.

Newsletter Editor Greenlee reported the sale of an ad for the newsletter by the Plano Quilt Show. Year-to-date expenses for the newsletter are reported as $191.30. For the upcoming garage sale in October, it was suggested that members submit a list of what they look for at garage sales to Greenlee before August 15. The list will be published in the September newsletter, giving members ideas of what to bring for sale at the October meeting.

Librarian Childers presented a master list of books donated and purchased since January, 2003. Eighteen books have been donated and 39 books have been purchased. Childers estimated that $50.00 remained in the library budget. President McCaw and Childers are planning a complete inventory of library items. It was brought to the attention of the board that library “jug” donations have fallen in competition with other money-raising projects. It was recommended that committee-sponsored money-raising collections be limited to only one per month. This includes raffle baskets, library “jug”, fat quarter donations, etc. In addition there was a question regarding the saturation point of the library collection/ cabinet and a proposal to report the amount of member use of the library materials.

President McCaw stated that Kay Cocleasure is in the process of devising a phone tree, geographically and area code correct. After studying the proposed list, further refinements were suggested.

Other discussions by the board clarified the time frame for the awarding of the Patriotic Quilt - late Fall, 2004 - and concerns about the effectiveness of the procedures currently in place for the Sunshine/Shadow Committee.

President McCaw adjourned the meeting at 8:20 p.m.
