COTTON PATCH QUILT GUILD

Greenville, TX

December, 2003

May the true spirit of this holiday season bring you great joy and many happy memories!

Letter from the President

Dear Quilters,

By now, each of us is well into our individual and family Christmas-planning pattern. Isn’t it interesting to learn how each family celebrates the holiday, often following traditions established a generation or so ago. Even menus may remain the same, or at least certain items that have become traditional. But whether you serve turkey or tamales, have your "tree" on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, we all should be mindful of why we're celebrating. Christmas is the Spirit of Love and Sharing. It's remembering the greatest Gift the world has ever received. It's giving joyfully of our abundance to those less fortunate. The gifts, the glitter, the wrapping paper and the loaded dinner tables are staples of our holiday; but not every family is as fortunate as ours are.

Our guild has much to be proud of. We truly follow the mission statement to promote quilting in all its aspects, but more importantly, we provide service to the community. I am so very proud of the projects sponsored by the Community Service Committee. Whether making quilts for Ronald McDonald House, the WIN shelter in Greenville or the Samaritan House in McKinney, participating in charity auctions, donating books to the public library or donating stockings and raffle quilt proceeds to the Salvation Army, this committee gently keeps us focused on goals beyond ourselves.

Now I'm going to ask you for one more donation this year. The FISH pantry is never full - there's never enough to fill the needs of Hunt County residents. Let's do something about that this Christmas! When you come to guild on Dec. 20th, I'm asking you to bring not just "one can" of non-perishable food, but a whole sack!! I'll have cartons and baskets in the Fellowship Hall where the offerings may be collected, and I'll see that everything is delivered to FISH the next day. Let's make Christmas a little less hungry for some of our neighbors. (Diapers are always needed, also!)

Piecefully,

Katharine

December Guild Meeting

December 18, 2003

6:30 pm

Christmas Party

The December program will be a make and take. Please bring a glue stick, paper scissors and paper punches if you have them (don’t buy them if you don’t!!) We will have an optional gift exchange of a $5 or homemade gift. Alice Cooney has challenged us to bring samples of gifts we have made to give others some great ideas for gifts to make next year. A sign-up sheet will be available to request instructions for making the items. Also, bring any Christmas item you have made for our very own cozy displays.

Election of officers for 2004 will be held at the December meeting as well!

Well, Quilters…it's that time of year again!  Membership dues for 2004 must be paid by February 1st (Bylaws Article IV - Members, 4.06) to have your name in the new directory pages.  I will be collecting dues at the December guild meeting and also at the January guild meeting.  Dues are $24.00 for one year.  This year we are going to try, if cost permits, to have everyone's picture in the directory.  I will be taking individual photos with a digital camera at the December and January guild meetings.  With our guild membership at 84 Quilters, we thought pictures would help everyone get to know each other better!

Remember that only members who have paid the annual dues will receive the guild newsletter after February 1st. You don’t want to miss any important news, so don’t delay in paying your dues!

Pam Hodapp

Note to: Shelia Sunday and Virginia Johnson - I have your guild directories. Please see me at the December meeting so you can receive your directory!

Refreshment List

With the growth in membership, we need to have additional members bring refreshments starting this month! You are responsible for bringing finger foods that can be eaten off a napkin. If you are unable to attend the meeting, find a substitute, trade with someone, or give money to the Captain* to cover your share. Captains, please call everyone to make sure they are aware it’s their turn! Thank you for faithfully serving!

Community Service

Ticket sales on “Quilted Christmas Dreams” are going well. The total at this writing is $1,416. We are very pleased to be able to make a donation of this size to the Salvation Army. The drawing will be held at the December 18th guild meeting. Please be sure to bring any tickets and/or money to turn in before the drawing. If you haven’t had a chance to purchase tickets yet, you will have an opportunity before the meeting. Please help us make this a very Merry Christmas by helping the Salvation Army. Captain Trayor and his wife are expected to be at the meeting to draw the winning ticket and accept our donation.

We have 5 quilts ready to donate. Does anyone have a suggestion?

If anyone turned in a quilt to The Quilt Asylum for the Samaritan Inn, please let Sherry know. It is important that we keep a record of what the guild does for community service.

Our accomplishments in community service have been extraordinary this year! Thank you all for what you have done to make the lives of others a little better!

Friendship Circles

Cotton Belles

The Cotton Belles met on Monday the first of December in the small dining room of Kavanaugh United Methodist Church. The FISH auction was discussed that the total raised from items donated by the Cotton Belles was $659.50. We are very pleased to have been able to contribute to the FISH fundraising efforts. Our monthly donation was $14 and three sacks of groceries. New officers for next year were discussed and will be Sue – President, LaNell – Treasurer, Marcia – Reporter, and Kaye is the Challenge Master. Speaking of the Challenge…the challenge between Kaye and Sherry is being repeated next year with participation open to all circle members. The guidelines for the New 12-Step Challenge to rid ourselves of UFO’s are generally – come to the January meeting with a list of the 12 things you want to accomplish in 2004. (What you put on your list is totally up to you, doesn’t have to be quilting; your list should push you to accomplish more than you might without it but should be things that you can complete.) Your challenge items need not be finished quilts. For instance you may choose to finish a certain number of blocks per month or to do a certain number of community service hours in the year. Two substitutions to the list will be allowed, in case, for example Sherry, who lost one of her projects for several months! The list will be turned in the Challenge Master and you keep a copy for yourself. You need not complete your list in any particular order. All 12 items must be accomplished no later that the January 2005 circle meeting. All participants agree to pay a $10 penalty, which will be donated to FISH, if you fail to complete all 12 of your challenge items. We anticipate great show and tell sessions next year! LaNell was the only one with show and tell this month. Her version of a bug jar quilt for Tutti was wonderful.

The Cotton Belles will meet again on December 16th (10:00 a.m.) at Sherry’s home for a Christmas party. We will have cookies and time for visiting, a gift exchange ($5 or homemade), then leave for lunch at Durning House and maybe visit a quilt shop!

Cotton Blossoms

The Blossoms met on the 17th of November for a regular meeting. After a business meeting and show and tell, Lorene and Joyce treated us to a make and take project. We made little Angel pins that were just too cute! The group met again on Dec. 8th for our Christmas Party. Everyone brought a covered dish and we enjoyed a great lunch. We exchanged gifts and revealed our secret pals. We all had a really good time and look forward to a prosperous New Year!

Cotton Strippers

The December 11 meeting will be held at the home of Pam Hodapp. We will discuss the next brown bag. If you have made a Blooming 9-Patch, please bring for show and tell, as this will be our project for next year and not everyone is familiar with this version.

Sunbonnet Sue

The December Sunbonnet Sue meeting was held at the home of Kathy Vestal. We were missing a few members but managed to eat their share of the wonderful dinner Kathy prepared. Everyone discussed holiday plans. Several of us got a tour of the new room addition at Sue’s house. There will be no January meeting due to the New Year holiday.
