Dear Quilters,
I'd like to begin this year by thanking all of you for allowing me
to guide the guild during 2003. I'll be depending heavily on Huey
(he just thought he was off the hook!), every single guild member
and the fantastic group who make up the Board. They are really the
greatest ladies; their interest and enthusiasm are so apparent and I
am confident that this will be the most wonderful and productive
year in the history of the guild. If you haven't already done so
please sit down this very minute and mail your annual dues - $24.00
- to Pam Hodapp. You don't want to be left out of the new directory
to be given out at the March meeting, and you surely want to
continue to receive this newsletter. How else will you keep up with
everything that's planned for us this year?! And as long as you're
writing a check, fill out another one for your raffle tickets on the
Butterfly quilt. Remember, forty members + forty tickets = $1600.00.
Piecefully,
Katharine
February 27 Guild Meeting
Bettie Hammock, Guest Speaker
Bettie will present a Trunk Show consisting of Tie Quilts, Miniature Quilts,
Redwork and other quilts she has made or collected. She began quilting in
1990 in Long Beach, CA and then retired and moved to Texas in 1991.
She has worked part-time in several quilt shops in East Texas as well as
full-time at Sew Many Quilts in Sulphur Springs. She has a wonderful
husband who supports her quilting and pattern making by doing all the
grocery shopping and cooking! Isn’t she lucky!?

Our next meeting will be Monday, March 3, at the church. Visitors are most
welcome.

The Cotton Blossoms
The Cotton Blossom circle met on Jan 20th for a regular meeting. We had 9
members and one visitor. For show and tell, Lorene modeled a really neat
jacket she had made. Madeline brought pillow cases that she had made for her
grandchildren, Pricilla showed us a wall hanging and Norlyn showed a quilt
that Annette made for Ronald McDonald.
Joyce McCord presented our program on a quilt as you go method for
courthouse steps. Pricilla did a demonstration on making continuous binding.
We met again on Feb 3rd.. Some of the members exchanged 10 inch squares. We
were given directions for a purse that we plan to make at a future meeting.
We also chose patterns to make a quilt to be given to the Presbyterian
Church to say thank you for the use of the building. We are looking forward
to our next meeting which will be on Feb. 19th at the Children's
Museum in
Commerce. Tina Fletcher is going to give us a demonstration on weaving.

Cotton Strippers
Members met at the home of Paula Talley. Everyone enjoyed touring through
the house and having our picture taken for Randy. We enjouyed a wonderful
meal of chicken spaghetti. News:
There are a few more spots for March
retreat for those who want to sign up. Pebble needed a few more people for
March 22 Jack Sheets workshop and the balance for the July retreat will be
due soon. Show and tell followed and those working on the row quilt showed
off their handiwork and planned for the next month.
Refreshments for March will be hosted by Jane, Sue, Connie, Donna, and Linda
Taylor.
Sunbonnet Sue
The February meeting was held at the home of Pebble Rehm. Everyone met for
a long weekend of quilting, except for Jane who missed everything due to her
fender bender on Friday night. We all thank Pebble for hosting it at her
house each year. The March meeting will not be held due to March
retreat.
Jane Martyn

At the Strippers meeting at Paula's house on the 13th, a large gift
package with several smaller packages in it was left on her kitchen
table. There's no name anywhere, no card or gift tag. It looks as though
it might be a Secret Pal package, except that we're not doing that this
year. Please call Paula (903-4455-6685) or Katharine (903-447-3821) if
you can solve the mystery.
Thanks,
Katharine McCaw

Minutes from the January meeting
The Cotton Patch Quilt Guild met at Kavanaugh Methodist Church January 23,
2003 at 7:00 p.m. Forty-two members were present. Guests Beryl Asberry,
Linda Coakley, Mary Jane Spinnar, and Denise Turner were recognized and
welcomed by President Katharine McCaw.
Pebble Rehm, vice-president/programs, convened the meeting with a
candlelight ceremony to induct the 2003 slate of officers. Officers inducted
were: Katharine McCaw, president; Pebble Rehm, vice-president/programs,
Connie Cawthon, treasurer; Pam Hodapp, corresponding/membership secretary;
Tracy Greenlee, newsletter editor; Sue Childers, librarian; and Carolyn
Burt, recording secretary.
President McCaw, a charter member of the Guild prefaced the business agenda
with a short history of the organization. She shared with the group that
there had been eight former presidents, seven of whom are still active in
the Guild. Membership in a class taught by Debra Hager formed the nucleus of
the Guild organized in February 1991. The first newsletter was published in
June, 1991. In its early history, a lending library was established, a
judged quilt show was sponsored, T-shirts and Guild pins purchased. The
Guild moved to Kavanaugh Methodist Church in 1998 and continued with
community service, workshops, retreats, road trips and professional quilting
programs. President McCaw ended her reflections with the following
statement. “A guild is more than a creative outlet, a guild is where so many
of my friends are.”
Business included action on two recommendations of the Executive Board.
Membership approved the monthly newsletter be sent by straight e-mail
instead of by the Guild web site. Moved by Lisa Coker and seconded by
Maejean Nixson. Motion was approved. Web site will be kept for publicity and
information purposes. Two new standing committees were approved and
President McCaw appointed Sherry Worley to chair the Community Service/Door
Prizes committee. Shelley Childers will chair the Sunshine committee.
The Audit committee, Nixson, Cawthon, Norlyn Quinn, and McCaw, will
reconcile the Guild books before the end of January and report to the
membership via the newsletter.
Lisa Coker will continue in the role of Historian/Publicity/Reporter/
Photographer.
Gwen Schroth will chair the Design committee for the 2005 quilt. Schroth
will select the committee of one member from each circle and one member at
large.
The By-Laws Review committee will start work in early February. Members
should submit any proposed changes or questions in writing before February
28 to McCaw. Recommendations will hopefully be ready for publication in the
March newsletter. Vote on By-Laws’ changes will be at the April meeting.
Committee members are Worley, Kay Colcleasure, Mary Lou Strohm, and McCaw..
The Nominating committee will be elected in October and submit a slate of
officers in November to be voted on in December.
President McCaw pointed out that the Butterfly quilt ticket sales have been
extremely slow. Proposed drawing for the quilt is in May. (Every member
needs to sell at least $20 worth of tickets. If you need tickets, contact
Betty Day. Get those dollars in! This is a major fund raiser for the Guild.)
President McCaw reminded members that dues are payable now. Dues are
delinquent after February 28 and your name will be removed from the roster.
A new directory will be distributed at the March meeting,
An information packet that will be given to new members when they join the
Guild is being put together by Hodapp.
Worley announced that there were 10 quilts ready to donate. The consensus of
the membership was to donate to the Greenville WIN Shelter.
Rehm sought consensus of the group regarding a garage sale as a fund raising
project. Jane Martyn, Colcleasure, Sue Childers, Maxine Leverett, and Hager
will work out the details for the garage sale. Rehm presented first block
examples of the 2003 Mystery Quilt available for membership participation at
$4 per person. Rehm introduced her friend Linda Coakley who brought for sale
her book Great Grandma Ives’ Redwork.
Coker was assigned to bring prices for chambray/denim shirts including logo
embroidery fees to the next meeting.
The 2003 Budget was presented. Colcleasure moved that the budget be adopted
as presented. Coker seconded the motion. Membership approved the presented
budget.
Martyn reported the following for the Cotton Strippers Circle. Last day to
sign up for Eufala retreat is February 1; the next meeting of Strippers is
at Paula Talley’s home; and that many members will be attending the March
6-9 Lake Eufala retreat.
Four members displayed quilts in show and tell. Coker, a shaded 9-patch;
Worley, a Coca-Cola fabric in Yellow Brick Road design; Allen Day, an offset
Log Cabin called Blues; and Rehm, Gather Ye Flowers, a Baltimore Album
original design. Gather Ye Flowers has been submitted for entry into the
Williamsburg and Paducah shows.
Meeting was adjourned at 8:40 p.m. by President McCaw.
Carolyn Burt, Recording Secretary

Committee consisting of Sherry Worley, Sue Miller, and Lisa Coker. We were
treated to a wonderful tour of the shelter. What an amazing place!
