Letter
from the President
Mind
you, I'm not complaining about all the rain, but I would like to be
able to get out to the garden before the squash and cucumbers rot on
the ground! Seems as though it's either drought or flood. My water
bill this month will appreciate all the rain, as do the fishermen.
During the brief lulls between downpours, they scatter out in my
cove, always close enough to the pier that they can scoot back in a
hurry. Ah, well, if we can't work outside, what's the perfect
alternative? Quilting, of course! Or cleaning out the sewing room
(inspired by Donna). Or just plain daydreaming about the next
project. I've even gone so far as to put mine on graph paper, but it
may stay right there for months?, years?. But it's the first step,
isn't it?
Piecefully,
Katharine

Nan Bentley - Ergonomics of quilting
Nan
Bentley is the supervisor of seniors for the Weatherford Recreation Center
in Mesquite. She teaches exercise and swimming and is certified by the
Arthritis Foundation to teach exercises in and out of the water for
arthritis relief. She is aware of the strains quilting can put on our
bodies and has techniques to share with us on how to alleviate our aches
and pains. She has a masters degree in Therapeutic Sciences from Texas
Women’s University and has worked for Timberlawn and the Terrell State
Hospitals. She has presented this program to the Mesquite Quilt Guild. She
will be showing us simple exercises to try, so wear loose fitting clothes
and be ready to get in shape (to quilt, of course!!)

Just
a Few Minutes...
Kavanaugh
United Methodist Church was the setting for the regular monthly meeting of
the Cotton Patch Quilt Guild, May 22, 2003. The social began at 6:30 p.m.
and the meeting at 7:00 p.m. Fifty-eight members were present and
President Katharine McCaw recognized thirteen guests from Quinlan: Peggy
McDaniel, Yvonne Stuttlesworth, Shirley Chovan, Clarice Sager, Janice
Janee, Mary Lou Holly, Streta Starnater, Donna Holtsclaw, Helen Cliburn,
Rozanne Clounts, Deadra Henderson, Frances Wiler, and Sherrie Perkins.
McDaniel explained that this group was seeking to form a quilting guild in
south Hunt County.
First
report given in the business meeting was by treasurer, Connie Cawthon who
stated that the beginning balance for the month was $2, 983.42 and the
ending balance was $3,222.16. Outflows were $199.28 and inflows were
$438.02. McCaw began the Sunshine report by welcoming back Ruth Bacon who
has been unable to attend meetings recently because of an extended
illness. Maxine Leverett reported that Maejeane Nixson’s hand surgery
was successful and that Maejeane was doing well. Donna Moon reported that
Huey Nobles was presently going through a battery of medical tests. McCaw
asked up to remember him daily as he had been an important and integral
part of the Guild over the years. Kay Colcleasure reported that Connie
Colbert was doing great after her serious surgery, and that Colbert sent
her thanks for the prayers, cards, and letters received from Guild
members.
Pam
Hodapp announced that the directories are now complete. The newly revised
by-laws and the list of officers made the completion. McCaw gave praise to
Hodapp for the timely work performed to get the directories completed.
Librarian, Sue Childers announced duplicate copies of library books were
for sale during the evening, and that Tracy Greenlee had donated four
books to the Guild library. Pebble Rehm asked that members look for the
missing mystery quilt patterns, and reported that all programs were still
on go for the year. She also canvassed the group for interest in a second
Silent Auction for either July or August. Gwen Schroth reported that 18
blocks have been completed for the 2004 raffle quilt and reminded members
that all blocks were due in June. She asked that the Design Committee meet
for a few minutes after the meeting.
Allen
Day reported that the 2003 raffle quilt to be drawn for at the end of the
meeting netted $2000. He also announced that Calico Junction, owned by
Misty Duke of Winnsboro, had donated six bolts of fabric to the Guild. He
also stated that the Catalogue of Quilts featured at the Paducah Show
could be ordered. Sherry Worley showed the new ironing board purchased for
the Guild with monies earned from the sale of hand-dyed fat quarters
provided by the Community Service Committee. Worley also mentioned the
possibility of a community quilt work time previous to the next Guild
meeting or on a Saturday. Lisa Coker announced that there were several
kits available for piecing and quilting. Coker showed a quilt done by Jo
Ann Cross from a bag of scraps as an example of creative excellence.
The following showed
quilting projects during Show and Tell: Mary Lambert-Smith, Michelle
Chitsey, Shirley Shaw, Cawthon, Elaine Sprague, Nora Quinn and guests,
McDaniel and Chovan.
Announcements by McCaw:
1) send change of address and phone numbers to both Hodapp and Greenlee;
2) bring a fat quarter to the June meeting; 3) call her the night before
the meeting if the elevator is needed or call the church secretary so that
the key to the elevator can be available; and 4) visit the bookstore in
the Crossroads Mall for 75% off bargain books.
After the 10 minute
intermission, Rehm introduced special guest and program speaker for the
evening, Lisa Erlandson of Gainesville. Erlandson’s program, “Who’s
Quilt Is It, Anyway?,” featured copyrighted patterns from the aspect of
the quilter, guild member, teacher and designer.
Fourteen winners carried
away door prizes for the evening.
And the winner of the
2003 raffle quilt is...none other than our own Betty Day! Erlandson drew
the name from the bag of some 2000 entries.

Belles
The
Cotton Belles met in the small dining room at Kavanaugh Methodist Church
on June 2. The business meeting focused on the Salvation Army Stocking
Quilt. We have decided to have the quilt machine quilted and hope to have
the quilt ready for the quilter after our June 24th workday at
LaNell’s. Work is progressing on the tulip quilt, which is to be donated
to the Critter’s for their fall bazaar. Show and Tell included Nora’s
big tote bag and snowman for the FISH auction, Marcia’s vintage Crazy
Quilt units, shaped baby towel (just too cute!), and finished Community
Service quilt. Sherry also showed three finished car quilts (one more
thing off of the challenge list!). Kaye told of finishing the spool dolls
and Christmas spiders from her challenge list, and Jeanne is working hard
finishing more items for the FISH auction. Kaye’s dessert was a
wonderful White Chocolate Cake with mandarin orange garnish. During the
work session we got a lot done on the Stocking quilt. Our next meeting
will be July 7th at 10:00 a.m. in the small dining room. Please
bring your own project for the work session. Marcia will be bringing
dessert. All visitors are welcome.

Blossoms
Several
Blossoms enjoyed a day trip to the Durant Quilt Show. We also enjoyed
running into other Guild members. June 2 the Blossoms met for a day of
sharing. Show and Tell was great. Nancy shared a new technique for a Big
Star baby quilt and a wavy curved log cabin pattern. She also had a wall
hanging consisting of 4 layers of various kinds of fabric to show the
effect of an underwater lily scene. Madeline showed the wall hanging she
acquired at the silent auction at the Durant Quilt Show. Her piece was
flowers by Paula Platter. Helen had been
busy
making tote bags for all her sisters. Work then began on completing two
donation quilts. June 16 the Circle will meet at the Northeast Children's
Museum for a weaving demonstration from Tina Selvaggi on the loom. This
loom is not only used for demonstrations but the items completed are sold
in their gift show. Our Circle has cut many cotton strips for this
project.

Because
of the noise level during the giving of door prizes, we will be trying
some new methods at the June meeting. Sherry will have an assistant to
deliver the prizes; she will also draw all tickets and use the microphone.
We hope these changes will allow us to continue to give out large numbers
of door prizes. Please be courteous to other members and keep the noise
level very low.

Service
The
Community Service Committee will be hosting a work session before the
Guild Meeting at 2:30 p.m. June 26th. We will be working in the
small dining room. Just in case you get there and the door is locked
please note that Sherry’s cell phone number is 972-816-5507. We will
make every effort to make sure that this is not a problem; this is given
just in case. You will need to bring equipment. If you would like to sew
bring your sewing machine and a basic sewing kit. If you would like to cut
bring cutters, mats, rulers, etc. Two fans will be available for use, but
I would suggest that you bring a small fan as it could get warm. Please
don’t worry about your skill level. We feel that part of our focus on
Community Service extends to helping to teach the art of quilting. Feel
free to bring your questions! We will be providing light refreshments.
We hope to see many of you!

BY-LAWS
COMMITTEE REPORT
Kay
Colcleasure, Sherry Worley, Mary Lou Strohm and Katharine McCaw served as
the ad hoc by-laws revision committee to consider updating the by-laws of
the Cotton Patch Quilt Guild. The group met in January, 2003 and examined
each article and section, making suggestions for additions, deletions and
clarification. In February the committee approved the suggested changes,
which were then printed in the March newsletter for the guild membership
to examine. There were no questions or objections from members and the
proposed changes were approved by acclamation at the April guild meeting.
Copies of the updated by-laws were distributed at the May meeting.
