March, 2003

Letter from the President

Dear Quilters,

What a great start to our 2003 guild year! I sense an atmosphere of enthusiasm and excitement that I'm sure is an indication of activity in the coming months. We added new members at the Eufaula retreat; Pam is hard at work on the new directory which you will receive this month; the by-laws proposed revisions are ready for April publication; the Jack Sheets workshop went over the limit and the design committee plans to get a running start in March. Don't miss this month's meeting! Don't forget to bring fat quarters for Quilto and also for the Sunshine baskets.

I hope everyone enjoyed the Dallas Show. I didn't make it; my knees are doing great, but that's more challenge than I'm ready for just yet. I know it was fabulous!

Piecefully,

Katharine

March Guild Meeting - March 27, 6:30 pm - Kavanaugh United Methodist Church

Bidding will open at 5:30 p.m. at the March 28 guild meeting. Items to be entered in the silent auction may be brought in anytime after 3:30 p.m. This is NOT a garage sale. (That will be later in the year.) Don't bring items you might otherwise throw away. These should be nice things that will appeal to someone. Examples: John Flynn quilting frame; irons; lights; bolts of fabric; major tool items. Also non-quilting things such as Debra's wonderful candles, Susan's chocolate chip cookies, embroidered tea towels; Christmas items; books, etc. Look around your home and sewing room! Bring things that are attractive and desirable.

Bidding will continue throughout the evening until 8:15 EXCEPT during the business meeting. You may continue to bid during QUILTO but the caller will not repeat numbers that you may have missed. The person making the final bid on an item must pay for the item that evening. Cash or check will be accepted. If there is time, those donors who required a minimum sale price will be paid. Otherwise, they will be paid the following day. Items not selling must be taken back by the donor.

You must contact Janice Bennett at 903-527-4267 BEFORE guild night to give her information on items you wish to donate. She will then prepare the paperwork and have it ready when you bring your item(s) in. At that time you will discuss whether you want a portion of the sale amount, the opening bid and the minimum increment.

This should be fun!!

Everyone needs to bring at least one fat quarter to get a Quilt-O card (or more if you want to play with more than one card.) Bring pennies or other coins to use as markers, which will then be collected for the Library fund. You may also bring small candies to use as markers or to eat while we play! John Martyn will be our caller for the evening and will pass out fat quarters as prizes.

For the April 24 guild meeting, M.J. Felick is coming to talk to us about the pros and cons of many different quilting tools. She lives in McKinney, has had a place near Mt. Vernon and a member of the Sulphur Springs Guild. The program should be interesting, especially to the quilter thinking about the purchase of some tools.

Pebble Rehm, Vice-President, Programs

The quarterly meeting of the Executive Board of the Cotton Patch Quilt Guild will convene on Monday, April 21st at 6:30 p.m. at The Cracker Barrel in Greenville.

Officers, mark your calendars!

Friendship Circles

Cotton Belles

The Cotton Belles Quilting Circle met at 10:00 March 3rd at Kavanaugh Methodist Church.  Kaye presented a wonderful program demonstrating a quilt pattern called “Jacks”.  What a great pattern for kids’ quilts!  Our members made a donation to FISH totaling $43.48 in cash and food.  Because of a mix-up we had plenty of dessert!  Is that really a problem?  Show and tell was fabulous…LaNell showed her plaid tattered pioneer quilt – “It just keeps growing”, Shirley and Kaye presented a total of 6 ABC quilts, Kaye’s “Beary Me Not in the Lone Star State” 4th in a series was a big hit, Sherry finally finished the circle scrapbook from a few years ago, showed some embroidered Garfield blocks that will end up in a quilt, and the Alice in Wonderland block she made in Billie Lauder’s class.  ABC quilts will need to be turned in no later than the March 27th Guild meeting.  It will be nice to have them for Guild show and tell.

Our next meeting will be April 7, 10:00 a.m. at Kavanaugh Methodist Church.  Every interested quilter is invited.  Shirley will bring dessert.  Sherry is going to demonstrate a couple of new ways to make a Nine Patch Block a la Billie Lauder.  A couple of people need to bring sewing machine and cutting supplies.  Sherry will bring all needed fabric.  We will spend a few minutes cutting batting for Guild Community Service quilts.  As always please feel welcome to bring a project.

Sherry Worley

Cotton Blossoms

The Cotton Blossoms met on March 4 for a regular meeting. We had show and tell and passed out the birthday fat quarters and secret pal gifts and made plans for road trips to quilt shows. We then got busy and basted a group quilt . We plan to take turns quilting it. We took a group of 6 to the Dallas show and had a really good time. On our way to the show we stopped off in Rockwall to pick up our friend Wanda Roy and was treated to a show and tell of all the things she had made on her recent trip to a quilting retreat in Hawaii. We also took some of the things we have been working on to show her. Our meeting for March has been canceled due to the death of Madeline Sullivan's husband. We will meet again on April 7th at the Presbyterian Church in Commerce.

Belva Isham

Cotton Strippers

A small group of Strippers, and 2 visitors, met at the church Thursday, March 13.  Sue brought the leftovers from retreat and we feasted on poppy seed pork, delicious green beans and ice cream for dessert.  Many thanks to Sue for all her hard work in putting retreat together for us. Everyone had a great time at retreat and we are already looking forward to the next one. Sue will bring the Row Quilt at Guild.  Two of our members won ribbons at the Dallas Quilt Show. Congratulations to Donna Moon and Pebble Rehm.  We also understand one of Alan’s quilts was accepted into Paducah.

Our thoughts are with Pebble as she is in Corpus Christi with her mother who is due for surgery. Ruth Bacon is doing better. Roberta (who we haven’t seen since November) proudly announced she had a new grandbaby. Show and tell followed with Roberta winning the “I did the most since I have seen you last” award.

Refreshments for April will be hosted by Debra Hager, Joy Gregory, Katharine McCaw, Jan Boren, Linda Franklin and Joan Biggs.

Dear Strippers,

Thank you for all the help in making this another great retreat. Without the help of Team Captains and the "can I do anything to help" attitude of all attending campers, this retreat would never be as successful as it is. The weather could not have been better, the shopping was fun, and as usual, I bought more than I intended and all other activities were more fun because fellow Strippers were there to share the fun. I really enjoy getting this retreat together for you and without you all it would not come to the same fun conclusion. With the Dallas show coming up, I also want to thank you for the gift you all gave me. It will probably be gone by the end of this weekend.  If you have any comments, complaints, ideas or recipes to share for the next retreat, please let me know. I am always looking for ways to simplify and make things better at retreat. Thanks."May Your Seam Ripper Gather Dust"

There was no Sunbonnet Sue meeting due to Retreat.  The next meeting will be at the home of Maxine Leverett.

Cotton Patch Quilt Guild Minutes

President Katharine McCaw called the Cotton Patch Quilt Guild to order, February 27, 2003 at the Kavanaugh United Methodist Church, Greenville, Texas, at 7:00p.m. Forty-seven members were present. Guests at the meeting were Betty Hammock, Libby Rook, Lee Ann Baker, Denise Turner, Vickey Bradley, Sharon Callahan, Jo Ann Cross, Sue Ross, Marshell Robinson, Ann Tave, and Nicholas Taylor (age 2).

The following members participated in show and tell. Alice Cooney showed “Gossip”, a chenille and flannel quilt in pinks; Lisa Coker, a quilt bag just completed in Pebble Rehm’s afternoon class and a bargello quilt; Barbara Booth, “Kaleidoscope” and a round robin challenge; Rehm, a floral raw edge applique; Belva Isham, two wall panels in western motif; and Sue Nixson modeled a purple quilted jacket that Pat Jonz had made.

Beth Winn showed “Homespun Homage” featuring trapunto that the Sulphur Springs Sit and Sew Circle had pieced and is donating to the Fort Worth Shriners Auction. All proceeds go the Shriners Children’s Hospital Fund.

Vice-President Rehm introduced Betty Hammock who presented her trunk show and gave quilting ideas to the group. After her presentation, McCaw announced a 10 minute break so the membership could view the trunk show quilts more closely.

McCaw reconvened the meeting and took committee reports. The Sunshine committee requested an extra fat quarter be brought to the March meeting.

Kay Colcleasure reported that there were many minor changes required in the By-Laws. Members should have their suggestions for changes to McCaw by February 28. Proposed changes will be published in the April newsletter and the vote on changes will be at the April meeting.

Coker, reporting for Community Service announced that 10 baby quilts had been taken to the WIN shelter in Greenville and that new kits were cut and available for members to sew. Coker reminded the group that personal items were being collected through the March meeting to donate to WIN.

Ann Tave, WIN representative gave a response of appreciation to the gift of 10 baby quilts and the gift of quilts from the guild when the new shelter opened.

Gwen Shroth stated that the Design committee had met and that the 2005 donation quilt would be a patriotic quilt with the theme, “What America Means to Me.” She asked that members begin thinking about the theme and to start submitting those ideas at the March meeting.

Betty Day reported an estimated $500 in sales for the 2003 donation quilt. McCaw stressed that members needed to get busy with ticket sales. “A quilt of this caliber should not go for less than $1000,” she stated.

Pam Hodapp announced that 63 members had paid dues for 2003 and reminded the group that dues would be in arrears after February 28. She also reported that $320 had been raised through advertising to offset the printing costs of the new directory. She showed a notebook binder that would house the new directory unless a member preferred the current type of binding.

Sue Childers has purchased several new books for the library and confessed that only five dollars remained in her budget. She passed the “jug” and members generously donated $60 for the library budget.

Coker gave shirt and appliqué costs. It was suggested that the information be put on the web site for easy access by members.

Childers gave information in regard to the Lake Eufaula retreat announcing that extra desserts were always welcome.

Announcement by Jackie Clark that the Greenville Area Retired Teachers Association cookbook was now ready for sale. Cost is six dollars.

It was brought to the attention of the group that the Terrell Quilt Show would be held April 12, 13.

Meeting was adjourned by McCaw at 8:50 p.m.

Design Committee

At the February Guild meeting, it was suggested that the 2005 Design Committee plan to complete their quilt for sale in 2004 and save the second Butterfly Quilt for raffling in 2005. This will avoid selling tickets for butterfly quilts two years in a row. Accordingly, the 2005 Design Committee will become the 2004 Committee.

Several years ago, the Guild raffled a quilt designed around the theme, "Texas," which was highly popular. Consequently, the Design Committee chose a pattern that similarly capitalizes on the creative abilities of all members but centers around the theme, "America the Beautiful." At the March meeting, background fabric will be supplied and members will be asked to design a block around the prescribed theme. The blocks can be of various sizes when finished: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 or 12 inches, depending on each quilter’s needs. The Design Committee requests that the colors, are not limited to but, should include red, white, and blue. Any scraps of red, white, and blue that are available after completing the block should be turned in to the Committee to be used for sashings and borders.

The deadline for completing your blocks is the June Guild meeting. We expect the quilt to be completed by the end of November and ready for raffling. If you have questions, please share them at the March meeting. If you cannot attend the meeting but want to participate, please contact Gwen Schroth at 903-568-4956 or at the following e-mail address: rschroth@texoma.net.

9 toothbrushes

1 body scrub lotion

5 bars bath soap

1 dental floss

6 shampoo/conditioner

2 cosmetic bags filled with cosmetics

1 cosmetic bag filled with shampoo and conditioner trials

2 undergarments

Recipes

Scrap Soup

1 lb chicken breasts

1 onion, chopped

7-8 cups chicken broth

8 oz pasta (your choice)

1-7 oz can chopped mild green chilies

“Scraps” of your favorite veggies (fresh, canned or frozen)

1 Bay leaf

1/4 tsp black pepper

1/4 tsp celery seeds

Salt to taste

Combine chicken breast, onion and broth in a large pot. Bring to a boil and simmer for 30 minutes. Remove chicken and shred meat. In same pot, or slow cooker, combine chicken with broth, add remaining ingredients (except pasta). Add any scraps of the following: celery, carrots, peas, corn, broccoli, tomatoes, cauliflower, etc. The more “scraps” the better! Simmer gently for up to 5 hours. Add more water if needed. Twenty minutes before serving, cook pasta according to package directions. Add cooked pasta to soup and serve.

Recipe works well with turkey breasts, canned chicken, ground beef or turkey, or lean sausage.

This simmering “scrap soup” provide several hours of stitching time!!
