Dear Quilters,
Twice a year, for a much-too-brief period of time, we get to enjoy open windows and doors and temporarily lowered electric bills. It was wonderful for several weeks; especially nice to take my handwork out on the deck and watch the cardinals and blue jays fight the grackles for space at the feeders. But now that heat and humidity have forced me to click on the A/C, it's back to the indoor sewing machine and watching wildlife through the large windows in my sewing room.
I hope everyone will make a very special effort to be at the May guild meeting. In addition to a most interesting-sounding program, "Whose Quilt IsIt, Anyway?", May 22 is the evening when we draw one name to win the beautiful Butterfly quilt. If anyone has money and ticket stubs to turn in to Betty Day, please make arrangements to get it to her.

Our group has had an unusual number of illnesses, surgeries and sadness this Spring. You'll see a listing elsewhere in this newsletter. Please remember these friends in your prayers. And be sure to notify Shelley Childers and Tracy Greenlee if you hear of any additional members we should remember.
Quilters are family!

Piecefully,
Katharine

May Guild Meeting

May 22, 2003

6:30 pm

Guest: Lisa Erlandson—Who’s Quilt Is It, Anyway?

Lisa Erlandson, from Gainesville, will join us again to discuss copyrighted patterns (she previously came and discussed quilt appraisals). Come and learn about copyrights on quilt patterns (is there really such a thing?)
Who ’s pattern is it and can we share it?

Just a Few Minutes...

The Cotton Patch Quilt Guild met in regular session at the Kavanaugh United Methodist Church, Greenville April 24, 2003. The business meeting began at 7:00 p.m. after the social which began at 6:30 p.m. A quorum of members and three guests, Michelle Valdez, Marcia Ryder and M. J. Felik were present. President Katharine McCaw opened the meeting with a special prayer for Joan Biggs and her family and Connie Wright and her family.

McCaw gave thanks to and recognized the evening’s food committee, then introduced guests and moved to the Show and Tell session. Show and Tell participants included Sherry Worley, Jackie Clark, Pat Jonz, McCaw, Kay Colcleasure, Jo Ann Cross, Gwen Schroth, Beth Winn, Tracy Greenlee, MajeanNixon, Letha Bost, Melva Isham, and the Sulphur Springs Guild donation quilt by Sharon Callahan. M. J. Felik, special guest from McKinney, presented the program on tools of the trade for quilters. Rulers, scissors, ruler holders, cutting boards, light boxes, rotary cutters, hoops, and basting pins, and basic sewing machine care were given a pro and con look by Felik.

After a 10 minute intermission the business meeting was conducted. Worley reported that hand-dyed fat quarters were for sale at $2.00 each, and soon again there would be community quilts ready for donation. Betty Day, in attendance at the Paducah Quilt Show, sent word that over $1000 of tickets had been sold for the 2003 raffle quilt. Schroth reported that a number of blocks were turned in for the 2004 raffle quilt and invited the membership to view them if they had not at intermission or before the meeting started. Lisa Coker moved that the by-laws’ changes be accepted by acclamation.  Debra Hager seconded. Motion passed. Revised copies of by-laws will be available at the May meeting. Sarah Bobbitt volunteered to coordinate the Solid Rock supper for the Kavanaugh United Methodist Church on May 14. Shelly Childers, Sunshine chairman, asked that we remember Sheila Sunday, Ruth Bacon, and Sue Childers in our thoughts and prayers. Scads of door prizes were awarded to scads of members. President McCaw adjourned the meeting at 9:03 p.m.

ATTENTION: FOOD COMMITTEES
If your name is listed on a food committee, it is important that you:

1. plan to bring your ( assigned ) dish, arriving between 6:15 and 6:30 p.m. or
2. arrange for someone else to see that your dish is brought to the church by the above time or
3. notify your committee chairperson if you will not be able to attend the guild meeting and
4. make arrangements to swap with another guild member

Our membership is growing - Yeah! - and we are having increased attendance at guild meetings. That's wonderful!! But it also means that everyone's contribution is vitally important. If you, and any others on the committee, ignore your assignment on the schedule, well - you do the math! How does it look to our guests if we run out of food because committee members dropped the ball? Chairpersons: Please contact your list!

Raffle Quilt

The Patriotic Quilt is well underway. If you have not received your materials, be sure to ask for them at the next meeting or contact Gwen Schroth (903-568-4956 or e-mail at rschroth@texoma.net) and she will arrange to get your materials to you. Those who bring a completed block to the May meeting will have their name placed in a drawing for some free raffle tickets.

Just a reminder: The blocks can be of various sizes when finished: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 or 12 inches , depending on each quilter's needs. The Design Committee requests that the colors are not limited to but should include red, white, and blue. We are providing the white background and some red and blue, but you are free to add to those from your own stash. Any scraps of red, white, and blue that are available after completing the block should be turned in to the Committee to be used for sashings and borders. The DEADLINE for completing your blocks is the JUNE GUILD MEETING. We expect the quilt to be completed by the end of November and ready for raffling.

Friendship Circles

Cotton Belles

The Cotton Belles met Monday, May 5th in the small dining room at Kavanaugh United Methodist Church. During the business meeting we discussed the new ironing board that the Community Service Committee has purchased for the use of the Guild, Santa's that we will be making for the FISH Auction this fall, and the painted Tulip Quilt for donation to the Church. LaNell donated to the circle some wonderful fan blocks that she won in a drawing from the Guild a few years ago. These blocks will be used for a future Service Quilt. Show and Tell was again fabulous! As part of our personal challenge Kaye has completely cleaned and repainted her entire sewing room and closet! She even brought before and after pictures to prove it. Jeanne Kirby showed a baby quilt (pieced by Sherry), that she has just finished hand quilting for the FISH Auction. She also showed two sets of children's placemats, also hand quilted and for the Auction. Sue showed off her Tee Shirt, which had been hand dyed (by Sherry) with fuchsia dye. Sherry showed the finally finished  4” exchange squares (we only started this in 1998! It is about time!), and some vintage fabrics that were purchased at auction. I wonder, do I get to claim the show and tell tiara? Or is Kaye once again Show and Tell Queen? Dessert was provided by Sherry, it was a pineapple and lemon cake served with pineapple curd or whipped topping. Our next meeting is June 2nd in the small dining room at Kavanaugh Methodist Church. Kaye will bring dessert and we will be again working on the Stocking Quilt. Several people will need to bring sewing machines, as we will be finishing the top and putting together the pieced backing. Visitors are always welcome!

Cotton Blossoms

The Blossoms have been working on a group crayon quilt to be given to the Presbyterian Church where we meet. It will be auctioned off in the fall at a fund raiser. At a recent meeting we made purses led by Joyce McCord and Lorene Leinert. A group of Blossoms made a trip to the Hill Country in April to see the wild flowers. We had a great time eating German food and looking at the Beautiful blue bonnets and other wild flowers. We also managed to check out three quilt stores on our trip, of course that was fun. The one in Kerrville is a must see if you are down that way.

We meet on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month at the Presbyterian Church on Monroe St. in Commerce. We meet at 3:00 pm.

Cotton Strippers

A small group met for the monthly Strippers meeting. A wonderful salad supper was prepared by Pebble, Kathy, Shirley, Sue, Debra, Mary Lou and Joan. Jane gave away a big sack of clothes in all sizes so if you missed that, too bad. Pebble announced that money is due for Summer Retreat. If you haven’t paid the balance you need to get it to Pebble. Volunteers will be asked to be meal captains. More information will be given out next month but FYI you can arrive around 9 Thursday morning. No lunch provided for Thursday & Friday. Bring your own utensils. The Mystery Quilt will not be started until Saturday morning (approx 100 5” or 6” squares). If you bring a dessert make it cookies, brownies or something easily eaten on a napkin.A small show and tell followed with a reminder about Solid Rock next weekend. The next meeting will be hosted by Lisa, Maejean, Roberta, Maxine, Tracy, Sharon and Huey.

Sunbonnet Sue

The Sunbonnet Sue group met at the home of Maxine and was hosted by Kay. Thanks to Maxine for making these arrangements at the last minute since Connie had to work. We were glad to see Joan, Susan and her boot cast, and Maejean’s granddaughter. Everyone caught up on all their news and shared pictures from the wildflower trip and recent quilt shows. The June meeting will be at the home of Katharine McCaw.

Community Service

What a great response! We raised $74.00 on the hand dyed fabrics. Thank you all very much! Is this something that you would like to have us do again? The community service committee has decided to invest some of the money raised from the hand dyed fabric in equipment for the use of the Cotton Patch Quilt Guild. Our first purchase is an ironing board! We hope that you will be happy with our selection. It will be stored in the storage space at the church and will be available for all guild, circle, and workshop needs. We would like to put this new investment to work by having a Community Service work session before the Guild meeting in June. More about this next month, I just wanted to mention it so you could be thinking about putting it on your schedule. If anyone has suggestions for the Community Service project please see Sherry Worley, Sue Miller, or Lisa Coker. We welcome all suggestions!

A Few More Minutes...

The Executive Board of the Cotton Patch Quilt Guild met in quarterly meeting at the Cracker Barrel Restaurant, Greenville, Texas, April 21, 2003 at 6:30 p.m. Present were President Katharine McCaw, Connie Cawthon, Pam Hodapp, Pebble Rehm, Tracy Greenlee, Sue Childers, Kay Colcleasure. and Carolyn Burt. President McCaw took reports from Cawthon, treasurer, who reported the Guild as being on budget. McCaw requested a year-to-date line item balance from Cawthon and directed Cawthon to get the Guild’s organizational documents to Burt, secretary. Hodapp gave a line item balance for membership. Cawthon suggested that cost of post office box and name badges, both one time expenses, be transferred from the membership budget to the miscellaneous budget. Rehm moved to honor that request and Burt seconded. Motion passed. Rehm, program; Greenlee, newsletter; and Childers, library gave their respective reports. Rehm reported that there was a possibility of having extra money in the program budget at the end of the year. Greenlee reported year to date expenses as $107.70 for printing the newsletter. Childers reported the library fund in the black and that the donation jug would be passed every other month. It was the consensus of the board that books that are lost be charged at the replacement cost. Colcleasure, parliamentarian, reviewed the changes in the by-laws and it was determined that an oral vote would be taken of the membership at the April meeting. Under other items of business, McCaw stated that the Guild’s gavel is yet to be found. A second item of business was to see if the Sunshine Chairman would like to have an assistant. Rehm also named Shirley Shaw to introduce M.J. Felik, at the April Guild meeting and Hodapp said that Jane Martyn would serve as temporary membership chair. Both Hodapp and Rehm are attending the Paducah quilt show. Concerns for Joan Biggs were expressed by the board members. Joan’s husband is critically ill. Meeting was adjourned at 8:40 p.m. by McCaw.

Goals give you more than a reason to get up in the morning;
They are an incentive to keep you going all day.
Goals tend to tap the deeper resources and draw the best out of life.

A word of thanks,
Thank you to my many quilting friends who have sent food, flowers, cards and prayers to me during this time of grief. A special thank you to the ladies who served our lunch. Mike and I had been married 34 years. He was always supportive in my sewing/quilting. He was proud of my work and glad I have friends who enjoy the same things. Please keep me in your prayers as I try to work through this time in my life.

Your outpouring of sympathy was heart warming to me when I lost A.C. The lovely cards, the hugs, the telephone calls and the special fabric basket were a comfort in this difficult time of my life. Thank you for caring and being my friends.
