COTTON PATCH QUILT GUILD

Greenville, TX

November, 2003

It’s easy to come up with new ideas. The hard part is letting go of what worked for you two years ago but will soon be out of date.

Letter from the President

Dear Quilters,

I miss all of you! But I also know that you would encourage me to be where I am. I can't predict when I will return - life and death are in God's hands, not ours -, but perhaps it will be soon!

In the meantime, Pebble is graciously adding another hat to her "wardrobe", and handling the additional responsibilities with her customary efficiency. Our guild is blessed to have such a wonderful board, able to remain flexible and to cover for other members when necessary. (Of course, the membership ain't too shabby, either!!) While we're patting ourselves on the back, let's just include everybody and preen with pride!

If I'm back by November 20, I'll be SO happy to see all of you! Meanwhile, please keep my sister, Jean Harrison, in your prayers.

Piecefully,

Katharine

November Guild Meeting

November 20, 2003

6:30 pm

Skills Night

Eight presenters will teach all of us new skills and/or techniques. Handouts with complete instructions will be given by each presenter. For those who missed this last year, we divide up between the presenters and rotate from table to table after completion of each demonstration. This worked very well last year and plenty of time is allotted at each table. It is wonderful to have so many gifted quilters willing to share their knowledge with us.

The December program will be a make and take. We will have an optional gift exchange of a $5 gift. Alice Cooney has challenged us to bring samples of gifts we have made to give others some great ideas for gifts to make next year. A sign-up sheet will be available to request instructions for making the items. Also, bring any Christmas item you have made for our very own cozy displays.

Election of officers for 2004 will be held at the December meeting as well!

Pebble Rehm, Program Chairman

Just a Few Minutes…

The Cotton Patch Quilt Guild mat at Kavanaugh United Methodist Church, Thursday October 23, at 7:00 p.m. Vice President, Pebble Rehm called the meeting to order and welcomed guests Dorothy Wells, Faye Coffman, Sherri Paisley, JoAnn Korbelic and Bob Belib. She thanked the hostesses for the 6:30 p.m. social.

In honor and memory of Ruth Bacon, a long-time guild member, a moment of silence was observed. Debra Hager and Michele Chitsey, guild members, are Ruth’s daughters.

New member Virginia Johnson was introduced and recognized. Mary Lambert-Smith, treasurer, gave the financial report stating a balance of $2,234.18 as of October 12. Community Service chairman, Sherry Worley reported 1) the proceeds from the Ronald McDonald quilt were $1,010); the FISH auction at Wesley United Methodist Church, Greenville is November 21; and 3) the community service committee had made and donated three lap robes to Oaks Manor Nursing Home, Commerce. Worley encouraged guild members to pick up pre-cut quilt kits provided by the committee. The nominating committee slate of Lisa Coker, Carolyn Burt, Norlyn Quinn with alternates, Pat Jonz and sherry Worley was voted on and approved as the one business matter of the evening. Coker will chair the committee.

Show and Tell delights were shared by Maxine Leverett, Roberta Vanderburg, Worley, Jackie Clark, Jane Martyn, Lambert- Smith, Gwen Schroth, and Norma Johnson. Vice-President Rehm announced that Skills’ Night for the November meeting was in place.

Martyn announced no Strippers’ meeting in November as many members will be attending Fall Retreat at Lake Eufaula. She also announced a craft sale, November 11 to be conducted by A&M-University office association members in Commerce. Barbara Ratcliff announced the BPWOA sale, October 31-November 1, Greenville, reminding members of the excellent cheeses sold by this group. Tracy Greenlee called attention to deletion of hostesses names beginning with “B” in the newsletter. This matter will be worked out.

Vice-President Rehm directed members through the procedure for the Silent Auction Sale and the Garage Sale. The sales were in lieu of the usual program.

Meeting was adjourned at 9:00 p.m.

Carolyn Burt, Secretary

Please see Sherry if you need to add to the schedule. The Christmas party will be Tuesday December 16th. If you would like to participate in the gift exchange please bring a $5.00 gift. The monthly FISH donation was $31. Santa’s were almost completed for the FISH auction, they will be finished by Nora and LaNell. Show and Tell consisted of Nora’s Thimble Book and Sherry’s Santa wall hanging for FISH. The next meeting will be December 1 at 10:00 a.m. in the small dining room. Sherry will bring dessert. Everyone should bring their own project (unless, of course, you have everything finished for Christmas!)

A big thank you goes to LaNell Bundick for finishing the table runner started by Letha Lovell. Susan Cross will contact the family and present it to them in time for the holiday season.

Cotton Blossoms

The Cotton Blossom Quilt Circle met October 20 at Madeline's Quilt Farm. We so enjoy going to her place to meet. Evidently we are having that year-end mad dash to get our projects completed as nearly everyone had show and tell. Norlyn gave a review of a Quiltmaker magazine and showed the finished "Japanese Twist Bag" as shown in the issue reviewed. After birthday and secret pal exchanges we basted a blue/white friendship quilt for Helen Rowe.

November 3 was a road trip for the circle. We headed to Ronald McDonald to deliver our 20 quilts. The director, Kay Cox, was very pleased with each and every quilt. In addition to our challenge quilts and extras made by our members we were pleased to add 4 community service quilts from the Guild. Kay and our circle thank you for providing them. After lunch at the Quadrangle in Uptown we went Downtown Dallas to Thanks-Giving Square to view the Amish quilts. This display is part of Quilt Mania. Continuing on we visited the bronze longhorn cattle drive. Very impressive. Our last stop was Quiltworks in Rockwall and a nice visit with Sue C. A fun day - next meeting Nov. 17.

You know you are a quilter when:

...you happily spend all day prewashing quilt fabric but when it comes to doing “real” laundry, you procrastinate until everyone is on their last pair of undies and socks!

...you have no qualms about driving for 2-3 hours just to see a quilt show or go to a quilt shop!

...you find yourself NOT telling your kids where you are going so that you won’t hear “Oh no, not another quilt show!”

...you start hiding the credit card bill when it comes so that no one else will see the number of charges you have made to your favorite quilt shop!

...you have a section in your day planner specifically for quilt notes, show dates and any ideas that may come up!

...you need new clothes and spend two hundred dollars on material instead!

...you give gracious compliments to the guys at work for their wonderful ties (all the while wondering how long they keep their ties and trying to figure out how you can get them for quilts!)

...you’re making travel plans and one of your first thoughts is if there are any must see quilt shops within a 100-mile radius of your destination!

…”Featherweight” doesn’t mean a boxer!

...there’s more fabric in your house than food!

...you start hiding the credit card bill when it comes so that no one else will see the number of charges you have made to your favorite quilt shop!

...you have a section in your day planner specifically for quilt notes, show dates and any ideas that may come up!

...you need new clothes and spend two hundred dollars on material instead!

...you give gracious compliments to the guys at work for their wonderful ties (all the while wondering how long they keep their ties and trying to figure out how you can get them for quilts!)

...you’re making travel plans and one of your first thoughts is if there are any must see quilt shops within a 100-mile radius of your destination!

…”Featherweight” doesn’t mean a boxer!

...there’s more fabric in your house than food!
