October, 2003

People rarely succeed at anything unless they have fun doing it!

Letter from the President

Dear Quilters,

As I write this message I am making plans to go to Washington D.C. to be with my sister. Her husband is in the hospital battling a rare sarcoma, and the prognosis is very poor. There are times for all of us when we are made more aware than ever of our mortality; and we are humbled by the realization that we are not in control. Please keep my sister and her husband, Jean and Earl Harrison, in your prayers.

I'm sorry to miss the October guild meeting, but Pebble will very capably wear more than one hat that evening. It will be a fun event and I hope, an extremely successful one. Remember, this is your chance to clear out those duplicate books, patterns you'll never in a million years make, gadgets you've never figured out how to use but looked fabulous when you bought them, and fabric from you-know-where! And who knows what treasures you'll find!!

See you in November.

Piecefully,

Katharine

Garage Sale & Silent Auction

Bring your cash and check books for the garage sale and silent auction! Exact change would be greatly appreciated (or just round up to the nearest dollar!) Come and see what “treasures” have been graciously donated to the guild for this fund raiser. Please remember to mark your prices on sale items before arriving!

Next month is Skill Night, so be sure to mark you calendars for this always popular meeting. You may just learn a new trick or technique!

Just a Few Minutes…

The Cotton Patch Quilt Guild met at Kavanaugh United Methodist Church, September 25, 2003, at 7:00 p.m. President Katharine McCaw welcomed and introduced six guests: Diane Redfearn, Amber Beary. Lindsey Priest, Janet Drake, Vickie Grubbs, and Susan Allen. President McCaw thanked the committee that provided food for the social gathering at 6:30 p.m.

Sherry Worley held the drawing for door prizes.

The following officer and committee reports were given. Treasurer, Mary Lambert-Smith reported a balance of $1919.10 in the guild treasury. Librarian, Sue Childers reported that a new video had been donated by Allen Day for the library. She also announced that the grand opening for the new Rockwall quilt store would be October 13-18. Gwen Schroth read a letter of thanks from Loey Knapp for donations by guild members to KOPODEG, the India coop that trains destitute women to quilt, a skill which earns a means of living for the women. Worley reported that the Community Service committee had donated 14 quilting books to the Walworth Harrison Public Library in Greenville. Pebble Rehm reminded members to have items for the October meeting garage sale priced. The building will be open by 5:00 p.m. for those who wish to bring items early.

Concerns were expressed for Joan Biggs who is scheduled for surgery and for Ruth Bacon.

A slate of nominees for the Nominating Committee to be elected in October includes Lisa Coker, Carolyn Burt, Norlyn Quinn, Worley (alternate), and Pat Jonz (alternate).

Kay Colcleasure, Worley, and Schroth each displayed donation quilts for various organizations.

Rehm introduced Susan Allen who presented a program on string quilts. Numerous examples were shown.

Barbara Booth, Jane Martyn, Virginia White, Rehm, Worley, Jo Ann Cross, Burt, and Beth Winn shared quilted items in Show and Tell.

Meeting was adjourned at 9:10 p.m.

Carolyn Burt, Secretary

Refreshment List

With the growth in membership, we need to have additional members bring refreshments starting this month! You are responsible for bringing finger foods that can be eaten off a napkin. If you are unable to attend the meeting, find a substitute, trade with someone, or give money to the Captain* to cover your share. Captains, please call everyone to make sure they are aware it’s their turn! Thank you for faithfully serving!

Cotton Blossoms

The blossoms met on September 17th at the Presbyterian Church in Commerce. We have been putting the finishing touches on all of our donation projects. We took 8 quillo’s to Boles Home last month. It is always fun meeting the boys and girls at the home. We plan to make a road trip next month to take our Ronald McDonald quilts to Dallas. That is one of the highlights of the year for us. We met on October 6th at Madeline's quilt house. She really has it fixed up nice. We enjoyed visiting and drinking Madeline's pink lemonade. If you would like to join us we still meet on the 1st. and 3rd. Monday of each month at the Presbyterian Church on Monroe street in Commerce at 3:00 p.m.

Cotton Strippers

Eight Strippers and three guests braved the distance to Rockwall to take a look at the new shop, Quilt Works, for their September meeting. We registered for prizes for the Grand Opening, were given a set of sewing needles and had a great time visiting and shopping. We adjourned for dinner at Luigi’s and everyone had a great time. We got to meet Maxine’s daughter, Tracy’s friend from work and Kay’s friend Carol who has visited before. Joan was there too wearing her designer neck brace and feeling much better. There will be NO meeting in November due to retreat. Everyone will bring refreshments for our December Christmas party. There will be no gift exchange.

If anyone is up for another round robin project in January, several of us are tossing around doing a “Blooming 9-Patch” round robin. We hope to have examples of the quilt at the November meeting so we might be able to begin planning at the December meeting.

Jane Martyn

Sunbonnet Sue

A small group of Sue’s met at the church. Katharine was our gracious host and we had a wonderful dinner of soup and cornbread, plus a fabulous chocolate cake for dessert of course. Everyone worked on their projects and Kathy showed the finished top for the Samaritan House that she is going to quilt. The November meeting will be hosted by Connie Cawthon.

Gwen Schroth Vegetable Salad

(Served at last month’s meeting)

Fix the day before serving:

16 oz can French cut green beans

16 oz can petite peas (Leseur)

12 oz can white corn

1 cup chopped celery

1 medium onion chopped

2 oz jar chopped pimento

2 carrots shredded

Drain and mix vegetables.

Dressing:

Bring 1/2 cup cider vinegar to a boil. Add 1/2 cup sugar and 1/2 cup oil, salt and pepper. Cool and pour over vegetables and refrigerate for 24 hours.

I added a package of crushed Ramen noodles accidentally last week and it was fine.

I am looking for a roommate for the fall retreat!

I already have a reservation at the Days Inn at the park for Thursday - Sunday.

Thanks - you can email me at sewquilt@flash.net.
