COTTON
PATCH QUILT GUILD
Greenville,
TX
April, 2004
“Friendship
that flows from the heart cannot be frozen by adversity, as the water that
flows from the spring cannot congeal in winter.”
James
Fenimore Cooper
Letter
from the President
Dear
Quilters,
It
must be one of Murphy's laws that even if Easter fell in July, we'd still
have a cold snap!! With three little girls to make Easter dresses for, I
could always predict with 100% accuracy that the last freeze of the season
would fall on Easter weekend. All that starched batiste, puffed sleeves
and miles of sash and then to crush it under a coat. Oh well, there's
always next year!
I
feel that I owe the guild an apology. The last two meetings have run way
overtime, and I simply didn't have control of the timing. Month before
last, as you recall, we had to meet at Wesley Church. There was a large
attendance and things got a bit confusing. Then this past month there was
an unusually long agenda and, again, we ran overtime. Although the
business of the guild is important, we all really come to enjoy the
speakers and programs and we've not done them justice in February and
March. So-o-o-o, from now on all programs will be presented prior to the
intermission. Even if some of the business has to be postponed a month,
we'll get the full program and hopefully will still adjourn by 9:00 p.m.
Our
Patriotic quilt will be displayed at the Terrell show on April 17th and
18th. Gwen has done a great job of scheduling people to man the table and
sell tickets. Hope to see you there!
Piecefully,
Katharine

Welch - Landscape Quilts
Lynn
Welch is a member of the Quilter’s Guild of Dallas and Plano. She
started quilting in 1977. Her interest in quilts actually began in high
school with a visit to Kutztown Folk Festival in Pennsylvania. She has a
BS in Art Education and has taken numerous classes over the years with
nationally known quilting teachers. She has taught classes and lectured
locally for area quilt guilds.
Her
quilts have been exhibited locally at the Dallas and Plano shows. On the
national level, her quilts have been juried into the Pacific International
Show, the National Quilting Association Show, the American Quilting
Society show in Paducah, and the International Quilting Association Show
in Houston. One of her quilts, “Poppy Passion” was featured on the
cover of Quilter’s Newsletter Magazine.

New
Guild members-If you don't already have your Cotton Patch Quilt Guild
lapel pin, you can purchase one for only $5.00. This is a great item
to add to your collection of pins from other guilds and/or shows! See Pam
Hodapp - don’t be the only one at your table without one!!

According
to the by-laws of the guild (Art. VIII, 8.08), changes in the by-laws may
be voted only in April, after being proposed in writing in March and
published for review in the April newsletter. An ad hoc committee composed
of Kay Colcleasure, Kathy Vestal, Connie Cawthon and Katharine McCaw
(ex-officio), met April 1 to consider three proposed modifications:
1)
"Membership fees will be prorated for members joining after February
. The idea is to reduce the dues by $2.00 per month."
Reference: Standing Rule #6.
Committee recommendation: No change in Standing Rule #6.
2) Article
VI: Add #13, to read, "Publishes proposed by-laws changes in the
April newsletter".
Reference: Art. IX, 9.01
Committee recommendation: No addition to Art. VI.
3)
"Art. IX is numbered twice. The second IX should be changed to X and
the current X changed to XI.”
Committee recommendation: Since this appears to be a simple typo appearing
only in the revision pages
distributed in March but not in the previous version of the by-laws,
members should simply strike through the error and renumber Articles
X and XI.
Vote will be
called at the April guild meeting.

Belles
The
Cotton Belles met in the small dining room at Kavanaugh Church in April.
The Fish donation was $32. Plans were made for a work day on the 15th at
Bernice’s. The May meeting will be a work day at LaNelll’s. Kaye made
a proposal to trade pieced stocking blocks from Christmas fabrics. During
Show & Tell, Sherry had pictures of a baby owl that was rescued after
falling out of the nest. A representative from the Heard museum was able
to put the baby back in the nest with the mother and brother. LaNell had
pictures of her challenges that had been finished and given away. Kaye had
a baby quilt to show everyone. Sherry showed her throw. Vickie brought
dessert and everyone had a fun day.

Blossoms
The
Blossoms met on March 15 and again on April 5 for regular meetings. We
used these meetings to complete the two donation quilts that we have been
working on. One quilt goes to the 4H and FFA kids of Commerce to
help them raise money. We haven't decided what we will use the other one
for at this time. Our group enjoyed going to three quilt shows this
spring. We are always ready for a good road trip. We will meet again on
April 19 at 3:00 p.m. We still meet at the Presbyterian Church on Monroe
Street in Commerce.

There
were 16 members present and 3 guests; Maxine Leverett’s daughter, Ronda
Gold and two granddaughters, Anna Watson and Moriah Gold. Several items
were brought for the “baby shower”. We decided to extend the baby
shower until the next month since several members were not in attendance.
We talked some about the Bloomin’ Nine Patches. There were eight members
present that are working on their pieces and sharing and suggesting
fabrics.

TAQG
March Meeting/Lisa Coker, Guild Rep
I,
along with Katharine McCaw, Sherry Worley, and Pebble Rehm attended the
March 30 meeting of the Texas Association of Quilt Guilds. The secondary
meeting was “So, You’re having a Quilt Show!” which was attended by
Katharine, Sherry and Pebble. I’m sure they have lots of ideas now. I
think our guild will benefit greatly from being a member of TAQG. The next
secondary meeting (May 25th) is “Staying Legal”, this meeting will be
for Treasurers and Raffle Chairs.
The
main business was getting ready for Rally Day 2004. Rally Day will be held
at the Convention Center in Tyler on July 31, 2004. The guest speaker this
year will be Mary Ellen Hopkins. If you have never had to opportunity to
hear Mary Ellen speak, and even if you have, I am sure you won’t want to
miss her. Rally Day is an all day event, with the meeting and introduction
of guilds beginning at 9 a.m. and all the activities ending around 4 p.m.
Admission is free, but you must show your current Guild membership card.
Without that membership card, you will not be allowed to enter. There will
be an hour break for lunch. You will not have time to leave and eat. You
may bring a sack lunch or purchase a box lunch. I have tickets for the box
lunches, which are $6. You have a choice of ham or turkey sandwiches, and
they include chips, cookie and bottled water. I have to turn in a count
for box lunches by July 1. See me at the April meeting if you would like
to purchase a ticket for lunch. I also have raffle tickets for a Bernina
125 machine, which are $1 each. Also, at this meeting I received Rally Day
pins. They are $5 or you can buy them at Rally Day for $6.
Now
down to business. TAQG is asking each member Guild to donate 2 miniature
quilts for the silent auction. I must have these mini quilts by the May
25th meeting of TAQG. Also, TAQG asks for donations for the Goodie Bags,
which everyone will receive one at Rally Day. Donations can be anything
from pencils, rulers, notepads, nail files, pins, fat quarters and such.
They plan on an attendance of about 700. If you can donate fat quarters,
or even a 1/2 yd or more cut of fabric, (Katharine and I will cut them
into FQ’s) or any other items, they must be turned in at the May 25th
meeting as well. Please help us by bringing donations to the April and May
guild meeting; we will have a box set up for them.
There
was some flannel fabric made available, if requested to use for donation
quilts. We were fortunate enough to receive a roll. I am not sure of the
yardage, but I guess it to be about 25 yards or more! This will surely
help our Community Service projects.
The
scheduled meetings of TAQG are listed on page 2 of this month’s CPQG
Newsletter. These meetings can be attended by more than one person. If you
are interested in attending any of the meetings, let me know!

Guild
Meeting Greeters!!
Look for
several of the Board members to be greeters at the April meeting. They
will greet guests, show them how to get signed in, get a door prize ticket
and introduce them to other guild members. Be willing to take a guest
without a member sponsor as your own guest! Explain the guild and how much
fun we have!
There will
be a sign up sheet for greeters for future meetings. There needs to be at
least 2, preferably 3-4 members to act as Guild Greeters! Let’s make our
members and especially our guests feel welcome!

Just a Few
Minutes…
The
Cotton Patch Quilt Guild met at Kavanaugh United Methodist Church,
Greenville, March 25, 2004. President Katharine McCaw thanked the food
committee and welcomed 50 members and 10 guests. Guests were Robbie Hayes,
Sara Hughes, Susan James, Pug Wikershan, Vernon Day, Laura Edwards, Cindy
Waltrip, Donna Watchorn, Chris Watchorn and Mrs. Clements, president of
the Mesquite guild, who brought their raffle quilt.
Lisa
Coker drew names for the first 10 of 20 door prizes presented during the
evening.
Reports
from officers and committee chairs were given as follows: Treasurer, Mary
Lambert-Smith reported a balance of $2,772.52; Membership, Pam Hodapp
distributed directory photo pages (first ever) and an updated membership
and address list to members. Hodapp received President McCaw’s thanks
for the tremendous amount of work Hodapp did on the directory. Sue
Childers reporting for Librarian, Linda Franklin announced the library
fundraiser, “the well-known hat” would be passed at the April meeting.
Design Committee Chair, Gwen Schroth stated the patriotic quilt would be
in Terrell for the April 17-18 quilt show. Members were asked to volunteer
to work the guild's booth at the show. Other places, such as Hunt County
Fair in June and various quilt shops were discussed as possible showings
for the quilt. Design Chair 2004, Lisa Coker stated that two designs for
the 2005 quilt would be submitted in April.
Sherry
Worley, Community Service, announced the completion of several quilts and
recommended donating them to ABC. The guild approved and members of the
Cotton Belles will deliver them to Tyler for ABC. Worley reminded members
to sign the number of hours contributed to making the quilts at the
community service table. No certificates were found in the first quilt
kits and Worley declared the certificates void. Worley drew Carolyn
Burt’s name from a list of people who have done community service in the
first quarter 2004. Burt received a packet of black and white fat
quarters. President McCaw continued the saga of the Butterfly Quilt II by
stating that it was not realistic to expect any positive resolution from
Sullivan’s. McCaw sent the plight of the quilt back to committee,
chaired by Joy Gregory and Debra Hager.
Members
attending TAQG on March 30 will be McCaw, Coker, Worley and Pebble Rehm.
McCaw asked members for questions to take to the meeting where the
secondary meeting will be directed to quilt show chairs. Report from the
attendees will be in the newsletter so that a decision may be made
concerning whether or not to host a quilt show in 2005. The vote will be
taken at the April meeting. McCaw stated that only eight members had
signed to chair prospective committees for the pending quilt show and at
least seven more committee chairs are needed. In addition, McCaw announced
that TAQG Rally Day, Tyler,. July 31, 2004. Coker has lunch tickets for
$6.00, as well as raffle tickets on the Bernina machine. Tickets for the
luncheon must be purchased by July 1.
Betty
Day reported that four guild members have had surgery. Up and about again
are Shirley Shaw, LaNell Bundick, Maejean Nixson, and Geneva Horning.
McCaw
will appoint an ad hoc committee to review changes in by-laws. Those
proposed changes will be published in the April newsletter and are to be
voted on at the April meeting.
Programs,
Rehm introduced Shelley Hilton Pace, from Weatherford, for the program
titled, “What I Wish I Had Known When I First Started Quilting!”
Show
and tell presenters were Lambert-Smith, Belva Isham, Roberta Vanderburg,
Tracy Greenlee, Kathy Vestal, Donna Moon, Worley, Chris Watchorn (guest),
Childers, Wickershan (guest), Beth Winn, Hodapp and Jan Ainsworth.
