Letter from the President

Dear Quilters,

Although the summer is far from over, so far we've managed to dodge the (official) bullet. No 100-degree days! All the rain - Yeah! – has allowed farmers to get a third hay cutting, for which they are grateful. Lake levels are up, gardens produced plentifully (all but mine) and our outdoor watering hasn't been as desperate and intense as in past years. I hope it's been a good summer for each of you.

One of the highlights of my summer was the Strippers' Cleek Retreat. We had a great time and already have 23 signed up for next year, as well as a commitment for the massage therapists to return. I decided to use up some of my Christmas stash on the Mystery quilt, but the real mystery is how the stash keeps growing instead of getting smaller! Is this one of Murphy's Laws?

Now that school is starting and families are returning from vacations, I hope that everyone will make a special effort to attend the August meeting. It's extremely important that there be a quorum present. Elsewhere in this newsletter you will find explained the problem facing the guild and the proposed solution. Please consider this carefully; it will only intensify as our membership continues to grow. It is very frustrating when trying to conduct guild business, and be stymied for lack of a quorum!

We're coming down to the wire on the patriotic quilt. The drawing will be at the October meeting, so please make every effort to sell whatever tickets you still have and turn the money in to Gwen.

Hope to see everyone on August 26.

Piecefully,

Katharine

Carol Morrissey—Big Picture, Hand Dyed Fabrics

Carol Morrissey caught the quilting bug in 1986. She comes from a long line of quilters and will bring a few vintage family quilts to show us as well as a trunk show of her own work. A few years ago she started dying fabrics when she couldn’t find what she needed at the quilt shops. Now she sells her dyed and painted fabric, designs quilts from photographs, teaches quilting and publishes patterns. She also works at Quilt Country in Lewisville.

The drawing for the Patriotic Quilt is drawing near. We need to get as many tickets sold as possible before October. If you do not think you are going to sell your tickets, please turn them in at the next Guild Meeting so that we don't run short at the last minute. Of course, we prefer that you sell those that were distributed to you.  If you have sold tickets and not crossed your name off of Gwen's list, please let her know how much money you turned in for your tickets.

Refreshment List

If your name appears on the food committee and you know that you will be unable to attend the meeting, please let your chairperson* know as soon as possible. If you need to make arrangements to have someone else deliver your dish, that would be appreciated. You could swap months with someone else. In lieu of either of those options, a $10 donation would allow the chairperson to ensure that we have enough food for all our members and guests.

Friendship Circles

Cotton Belles

The August meeting for the Cotton Belles was held at Kavanaugh Methodist Church. The Fish donation was $42.00. Kaye gave a talk on making labels for our quilts. Sherry gave a talk on the TAQC in Tyler. Everyone was told to bring their sewing machines, mats, short rulers, 12" square rulers and neutral thread at the next meeting. Everyone will be able to make their own quilt square. A working day was held Monday, August 9 at the church. The Christmas quilt, which was made by the members, was given as a surprise to Jeanne & Ollie Kirby who have been so faithful working with Fish. La Nell provided desert.

Cotton Blossoms

The Cotton Blossoms took a road trip to the Quilt Mercantile store in Celeste to see the Eleanor Burns trunk show on July 16. The trunk show had now yet arrived but we had a great time visiting and shopping anyway. We stopped in on the way through Greenville for a good lunch at Audrey's tearoom.  On the way back home we stopped at the Up Town Mall for a little more looking and shopping.  We are always ready for a good road trip.  Our next meeting was on August 2nd at the Presbyterian Church in Commerce from 1:30 to 5:00. Joyce McCord did the program on using the Square in a Square ruler. By the next meeting we should all have our wall hanging completed or almost.

Cotton Strippers

A big "Thank You" to Greta Starnater who welcomed 24 members of the Cotton Strippers Circle into her beautiful new home and to the refreshment committee for the wonderful meal. Kathy Vestal gave us an update on Donna Moon's recent surgery & recovery. For all those who wish to send get well cards they may be sent to her at her home address or to her daughter's where she will be recuperating.

Sue Childers advised that the deadline to sign up for November Retreat is Sept. 15th. All CPQG members are welcome to attend. Contact Sue (903-883-3578) for dates and cost. Kay Colcleasure presented the Strippers with a challenge for the 2005 CPQG quilt show. If you wish to participate, please bring 2 fat quarters of "ugly" fabric and $1.00 to the next meeting. Kay will provide additional instructions at that time. For more information, contact Kay (972-924-4151) or Kathy (903-883-4132.) Pebble Rehm gave all the "Blooming 9 Patchers" encouragement & incentive to complete their quilt tops by the Dec. meeting in order to be included in the prize drawing. She also, gave us a wonderful description of her trip to the Sisters, OR. Quilt Show, the northwestern US and national parks. Show-n-Tell was enjoyed by all.

The next meeting will be held on Sept. 9th at Kavanaugh Methodist Church in Greenville with refreshments provided by: Mary Welch, Carolyn Wright, Barbara Ratcliff, Kathy Vestal, Sue Ross, Huey Nobles, Jane Asberry

COTTON PATCH QUILT GUILD EXECUTIVE BOARD

The executive board met at The Cracker Barrel restaurant in Greenville at 6:30 on July 19, 2004. Attending were Katharine McCaw, Barbara Ratcliff, Linda Franklin, Mary Smith, Tracy Greenlee and Pam Hodapp. Absent were Kay Colcleasure and Pebble Rehm.

McCaw had compiled the YTD expense-to-budget figures for each office. All are operating very safely at or below the mid-year point.

Membership Chair, Pam Hodapp, reported 82 members through June 30. Of these, 5 live out of state, 3 live more than 100 miles away, and 11 drive between 50 and 100 miles (one way) to attend meetings. That is a total of 23% of the membership for whom attending a meeting may not be realistic. However, our guild by-laws state that the entire membership must be used for counting a quorum, without which no vote may be taken. (Note: A by-laws amendment was proposed for a vote this past April, but failed for lack of a quorum. On another issue the following month, proxies barely achieved a quorum, and at the July meeting an issue that would have required 44 members could not be voted on because we had no quorum.) We will always encourage new members, no matter where they live. There are a number of our members with whom we are able to visit only at retreat, opportunities we eagerly look forward to. But for monthly operating purposes, it is necessary that a modification to Article IV of the by-laws be made as soon as possible. This can be done at any time, according to Article IX.9.02. Therefore, the executive board will present a recommendation in the August newsletter and hopefully be able to call for the vote at the August meeting.

The board addressed, once more, the variety of opinions concerning food at guild meetings. A ballot will be distributed at the August meeting, giving members an opportunity to vote their preference.

The next executive board meeting will be October 11, 2004.

Respectfully,

Barbara Ratcliff

EXECUTIVE BOARD RECOMMENDATION

The executive board of the Cotton Patch Quilt Guild recommends the following modification to its by-laws, effective upon approval:

4.01 Any person shall be declared a member of the Cotton Patch Quilt Guild upon payment of the annual or semi-annual ( after July 1 ) dues.

4.02 There shall be three (3) membership designations.

1. Junior membership - (as written)

2. In-Area membership - available to those whose residence is less than seventy-five (75) miles from the location of the meeting. Each In-Area member at a meeting is entitled to one vote on each matter submitted to a vote.

3. Out-of Area membership - available to those whose residence is more than seventy-five (75) miles from the location of the meeting. These members shall not be counted for purposes of achieving a quorum and shall not vote. All other benefits and responsibilities shall remain unchanged.

4.03 - 4.07 Former 4.04 through 4.08 as written

Just a Few Minutes…

The Cotton Patch Quilt Guild met at Kavanaugh United Methodist Church on July 22, 2004 at 6:30 p.m., with 42 members and 6 guests present. Visiting our group were Courtney Greenlee, Linda Hevron and Deborah Schlief. Three guests joined the guild. Welcome to Sherie Kao, Margaret Patton and Jeanie Herring. Ice cream and toppings of your choice followed a delicious supper.

Many thanks to Linda Franklin, Librarian, for all the hours she has spent cataloguing our library and separating the duplicates and orphans for a sale to benefit the library. The library fund is approximately $60 richer now, and following Quilto tonight, there will be more.

Seven members displayed their handiwork during Show and Tell. Jo Ann Cross announced that the miniature she made for the Scottish Rite Charity Auction had sold for $1700! Congratulations, Jo Ann! Pebble Rehm, Program Chair, has asked whether there is interest in having 1) a floor cloth workshop - $60 includes all materials, and/or 2) A Mystery Quilt day on August 28 - $5 payable in advance. Contact Rehm for more information.

The Community Service Committee has a new selection of kits available and ready to be completed.

The Sulphur Springs guild displayed and sold tickets on their raffle quilt. The drawing will be September 18. Gwen Schroth, Design Committee 2003, asked that anyone still holding tickets for our own Patriotic Quilt raffle, contact her. Also let her know if you have turned in money to anyone other than Schroth. She is very low on the ticket supply and members are asking for more. Over $200 was sold at the meeting tonight!

Lisa Coker suggested that those going to Tyler on July 31 for the TAQG Rally Day to arrive early. More attendees are expected than there are goody bags!

Following the business meeting and intermission, our favorite caller and ex-officio member, John Martyn, led a rousing round of Quilto. Lots of our members - some more than once! - added to their fat-quarter stash before the evening was over; sadly, this writer wasn't one of the lucky ones. Quilto is an annual event, and always benefits the library generously.

Good friends, lots of ice cream, and Quilto! Life is good!

Joyfully,

Barbara Ratcliff

BOOKNOTES - from the librarian

We made $59.75 in book and magazine sales, and collected $48.96 from Quilto donations at the July meeting.  After we pay taxes of $4.93, we'll have made $103.78.  Thank you one and all for your support!

We're putting in another bookcase in the guild's storeroom, and I'm ordering books.  Let me know if you have a title or subject that you'd like to see in the library.

Are you interested in the library offering stencils and templates?  We have some now to lend out and I will get more if there is a demand.

Did you know that we have videos for you to borrow?  We have videos that show you how to quilt the perfect stitch, strip piece like a pro, rotary cut efficiently, and more.  Famous quilters such as Debbie Mumm and Sharlene Jorgenson show you their techniques for country quilting.  At our library you not only read the how-to’s, but can also view them.  Email me your titles and suggestions: lcftexas75402@yahoo.com
