“We
not only live among men, but there are airy hosts,
blessed spectators, sympathetic lookers-on, that see and

acts.”
Henry

Letter
from the President
Dear
Quilters,
I
can't believe that this year is half gone! Those of us
who, like me, are a bit "long in the tooth",
know that the days and months have definitely
accelerated, and will continue, only faster, leaving us
to wonder how we could spend our time more productively.
As my grandchildren are graduating from college, I've
been reviewing, lately, how my goals and objectives are
changing. The satisfying events in my life have moved
from having a spotless house (that was never true!) to
watching the squirrels struggle to overcome the
squirrel-proof feeders (they always figure it out!) in
the yard.
Many
years ago I felt almost obligated to take on every
quilting project that came along, whether it was a road
trip or a round robin, a new quilt magazine or a shelf
full of UFOs. But now, any sense of urgency is limited
to finishing some of those intimidating UFOs that are so
visible through the transparent acrylic boxes. I don't
worry about how long ago the project was started - ,
it's just so satisfying to put in the final stitch. And
it doesn't hurt that Alice Cooney prods us gently with
the challenge of a reward at the end of the year!
So,
as this year is about half gone, so is the progress on
my current UFO, hand-quilting a Stack-n-Whack begun
about five years ago. My goal is to finish the quilt and
the year together. I'm leisurely working my way through
both.
Piecefully,
Katharine

Susan
Howell - Floor Cloths
Since
graduating from college, Susan Howell has tried various
creative mediums - painting, knitting, photography but
found quilting and calligraphy to hold her interest
most. Since her first quilt in 1976, she has gradually
increased her number of quilts and UFO’s. In the late
‘90’s, she purchased a book on floor cloths and year
or so later painted her first one. Most of her floor
cloths are quilt-related in design using paint and
fabric.
She
will tell us how to make them, offer them for sale and
has offered to do a workshop.

Batting for Community Service Quilts not to be charged
against Community Service Budget

Community
Service
Sorry,
but the new quilt kits will not be ready this month. I
have spent too much time out of town helping my parents
get ready for their move. I hope that the kits will be
ready for the July meeting. In the meantime, we still
have kits in all stages. Where we really could use some
help is with the quilting. We have quite a backlog of
quilts ready to be layered and quilted. Batting will be
available at the June meeting. Help us out! These quilts
are a great opportunity to practice that pesky free
motion quilting!
June is a
special door prize month. Be sure to sign up at the
Community Service table if you have worked on any
Community Service project between the March Guild
meeting and the June Guild meeting to be eligible for
the prize drawing. The prize will be a packet of
hand-dyed fat quarters.

List
If
your name appears on the food committee and you know
that you will be unable to attend the meeting, please
let your chairperson* know as soon as possible. If you
need to make arrangements to have someone else deliver
your dish, that would be appreciated. You could swap
months with someone else. In lieu of either of those
options, a $10 donation would allow the chairperson to
ensure that we have enough food for all our members and
guests.

Isham’s son-in-law is back in the hospital. His
cancer came back with a vengeance and it is taking
all of the family to stay there with her daughter
in Tyler and keep her two little boys 5 and 11.
 |
Several
guild members entered quilts in the Hunt County
Fair and Jo Ann Cross won BIG! (Sorry conflicting
notes on Best of Show or Best of Division…)

The
Sunshine & Shadows basket needs fat quarters. We
need reds and yellows, however we would appreciate any
donations.
If
a guild member has had a death in the family or has had
surgery, please let us know. If you have had a happy
event in your life, please let the guild members rejoice
with you.

The
Cotton Belles met Monday June 7th in
the small dining room at Kavanaugh Methodist Church. We
were a somewhat smaller group due to the absence of
several members. We were all very pleased to see Ollie
Kirby looking so well! A donation of $43.00 was taken up
for FISH. LaNell reported on the $86.73 that was spent
on a wedding present for Greg Cross and his new bride.
Thanks to LaNell for taking care of the purchase and
delivery. Show and Tell included LaNell’s ragtime baby
quilt, Sherry’s Purple Debbie Caffery Mystery quilt,
Sherry’s Mother’s hand appliqué leaf top, and
Jeanne’s Patriotic Place Mats for FISH. Everyone had a
nice visit and some of us even worked on our own
projects. Sue’s Lemon/Chocolate chip picnic cake was
wonderful.
We
hope that everyone will be able to attend the July
meeting (tentatively July 5th) as it will be
a very special meeting. Among other things we will be
having a Christmas in July Strip swap. If you have
Christmas fabrics bring along some strips to swap and
some to donate to members who do not have a Christmas
stash. No one should go out and purchase fabrics for
this swap. The strips will be used to make Christmas
stocking blocks which we will exchange (at some far off,
as yet undetermined date!). There is no specific size
for the strips. Anything between 1 ¾” and 3 1/2”
will be fine. Kaye will be presenting the program on
bindings, Sherry will bring dessert.

The
Cotton Blossom circle met on May 17 in Commerce
for a regular meeting. We were happy to welcome a
new member, Charlene Heard, to our group. After
business and show and tell we were treated to a very
informative program by Lisa Coker on binding a quilt. We
were all inspired to try her method on our next Ronald
McDonald quilt. We were glad to have Carolyn Burt with
us. The Blossoms let again on June 7 at the Methodist
Church in commerce. Two members had show and tell quilts
and had used Lisa's method to put on the binding. Thanks
again Lisa for coming and doing our program. The program
for this meeting was on paper piecing. It was a
refresher course for some and new to others. It was
presented by Joyce McCord and Belva Isham. We made
tentative plans to attend the Mesquite Quilt show. The
Blossoms meet again on June 21st

Twenty Cotton
Strippers met at the church. Our new
unofficial dictator wasn’t able to make it so Jane
filled in. Those on the July food committee were a
little short handed so a collection was taken for
chicken. Thanks to Mary Jane for running down to the
chicken store. Greta graciously volunteered her home for
the August meeting. More details and directions later.
Katharine
gave a summer retreat update. All money is due by the 15th.
The massage therapist will be there. Call Katharine if
you want to sign up. $25 for an hour – believe me its
worth it. There is one opening left for retreat.
Katharine will be giving out the final information at
Guild.
Mary
Lou brought her quilt history book. Kay is going to make
copies of the information sheet and pass them out at
guild. This is a great way to catalog your quilts.
Roberta brought her European vacation pictures and they
were marvelous.
NOTE:
There will be no meeting in July due to retreat.
August refreshments are Jane Asberry, Allen & Betty
Day, Joy Gregory, Pebble Rehm, Sue Ross, Mary Lou Strohm,
and Jo Anne Cross.

The
Sunbonnet Sues met at the home of Sara Bobbitt.
Special guests from Missouri were Maxine’s daughter
Robbie and her daughter Heidi. Everyone looked at their
family quilts and input was given to Heidi on putting
her quilt together. The food was great and Sara is
looking forward to her retirement next month. The July
meeting will be held at Kathy Vestal’s new studio.

Patriotic
Raffle Quilt
We
need to boost the ticket sales for the Patriotic
Quilt, as we will be raffling the quilt in October. If
you have not sold the tickets that were checked out to
you, please do so as soon as possible. If you
need more tickets, please let me know and I'll
arrange to get them to you. If you know of a
way to increase the sales, please let me know so that we
can take advantage of every opportunity available to us.

TAQG
Rally Day
July

Harvey
Convention Center
Tyler,
TX
10
am until 4 pm
I
will have box lunch tickets for sale at guild. The
lunches are $6, and you have a choice of ham or turkey
sandwiches. Included in the lunch are chips,
cookie, and bottle water. I have to turn in a
lunch count by 7-1, so this will be your last
opportunity to purchase a lunch.
Also,
I will have Rally Day pins and TAQG pins for sale.
They are $5 or you can purchase one at Rally Day for $6
I
will be selling tickets for the Bernina 125 machine.
This will be drawn at Rally Day. The chances are
$1 each.
I
will have a sign up sheet at the front table at the June
guild meeting. If you think you will be attending
Rally Day, please sign up. I need to turn in an
approximate count of guild members that will attend by
7-1. This is to help plan on the amount of seating
that will be needed.
Also,
if you have the miniature quilt ready, please bring it
to guild. Thanks to those donating a mini
quilt.
If
the guild wants to set up our donation quilt and sell
tickets on it at lunch, I need to have at least 5
people willing to help sell tickets during the lunch
break. This will be the only time we have to sell.
If there is not enough people to help sell, we will not
be taking the quilt.
Thanks,
Lisa
Coker

Cleek Retreat.
For all
you luxury-loving ladies who enjoyed having a massage
therapist at last year's Cleek retreat - You're in luck!
The same gal will be with us again this year, on
Saturday, July 10. One-hour messages will still be
$25.00. If there are enough who sign up, she will bring
a second therapist. Reservations and payment must be
made in advance. Send your check to Katharine McCaw,
payable to Vickie Perry, BEFORE July 1.

Just
a Few Minutes…
The
Cotton Patch Quilt Guild met May 27, 2004 at Kavanaugh
United Methodist Church at 6:30 p.m., with 55 members
and 6 guests attending. President Katharine McCaw
thanked the food committee for a wonderful meal and
welcomed guests Margie Hendrix, Judith Stone, Margaret
Patton, Menetra Hathorn, Linda Nix and Silas Bacon.
Pebble
Rehm introduced Judith Stone, who presented "Red
and White Quilts". She brought many antique (1835!)
and not-so-old beautiful red and white quilts, including
pieced, appliqué and redwork, explaining their history
and technique. Interestingly, many of them had no
batting. These were used as summer bedcovers. She also
shared tips on how to care for and store old quilts, and
offered her patterns for sale.
After
a short intermission, McCaw convened the business
meeting. Door prizes were awarded to seven lucky
recipients. Mary Smith reported a treasury balance of
$2,517.00. Smith also gave an overview of the latest
TAQG meeting; the program was "Keep It Legal"
and dealt with sales tax issues. The guild will have to
begin charging sales tax on many items offered for sale,
such as books, fat quarters, etc. Smith will confirm our
tax-exempt certification and try to determine our
incorporation status. More later.
McCaw
stated that the Cleek Retreat is full, but a waiting
list is being started. Balance of the cost is due before
June 15.
Debra
Hager and the second Butterfly Quilt committee suggested
that the quilt be offered as a door prize at the
December meeting; motioned by Hager, seconded by Elaine
Sprague, unanimous approval. To be eligible for the
drawing, one chance will be put in the pot for each
dollar donated. Proceeds will be designated to offset
the cost of materials used in the quilt. Eligibility is
limited to guild members who are in attendance at the
meetings, and there will be no solicitation or off-site
entries. Anyone wishing to participate must contact
Hager for an entry form.
Lisa
Coker, TAQG representative, reminded members of Rally
Day in Tyler on July 31. She has chances on the Bernina
sewing machine as well as lunch tickets ($6.00), or
attendees may bring a brown bag. Admission is free by
showing your guild membership card.
The
Hunt County Fair runs June 4 - 12. Hager is coordinating
the arrangements for us to sell tickets on the Patriotic
quilt and provide demonstrations in the Creative Arts
building. Rehm and Allen Day gave an update on their
fact-finding regarding a quilt show in 2005. A tentative
date has been set for the second weekend of October.
More later!
Seven
members displayed Show and Tell. Carolyn Burt showed the
quilt she won at Quilts on the Square in Commerce. The
design committee, chaired by Lisa Coker, showed drawings
of three quilts, from which the guild would select a
pattern for the 2005 donation quilt. A show of hands
indicated that "Vintage Memory" was the
majority choice. It will be made using reproduction
Civil War fabrics and colors.
The
meeting adjourned at 9:30 p.m.
