“Life
is a grindstone. Whether it grinds you down or
polishes
you up
depends
on what you are made of.”

Letter
from the President
Dear
Quilters,
As
I write this I am preparing for the four-day fun-a-thon at Cleek
Retreat Center. This is the third year that the Strippers have
sponsored it, and I'm so looking forward to spending four entire
days with absolutely no guilt pangs that I should be riding the
mower instead of hunching over a sewing machine.
Aside
from the element of productivity (more, or less, depending on
how much fun we're having! ), the greatest outcome of any
retreat I've ever attended - and that's quite a few - is the
fellowship. I always come away having made new friends and
deepened long standing friendships.
Remember
to bring pennies, or other forms of markers, for playing Quilto
in July. Also stick a few dollars in your pocket for the library
duplicate-and-orphan sale. This is a great opportunity to pick
up a real treasure for pittance, and help the library fund at
the same time. Linda Franklin has done a fantastic job of going
through our library, re-cataloging everything and pulling out
items we no longer need.
We
can all be grateful for the blessing of rain. It's kept the
temperatures bearable and should certainly help reduce our
lawn-watering bills. Some of the gardens have suffered from too
much water, but that's a small price to pay in exchange for
rationing and burning bans. And the fishing at my pier is better
than ever!
Piecefully,
Katharine

Quilt-O
and Ice Cream Social
What
better way to spend a hot summer evening than with us at the
church with ice cream and Quilt-O?! Come join us for fun and
cool treats. Bring change for marking your quilt-o cards (which
will then be gathered up for the Library), candy or buttons can
also be used (there’s a little time for eating candy but
definitely no time for sewing buttons!), and bring a fat quarter
for every card you want to play (these are the prizes for a
completed row on your card.) If you haven’t played before, ask
any of the other members to fill you in on the fun. If you are a
veteran player, you know we are in for another round of fun with
John Martyn as our fearless quilt-o caller!

Refreshment
List
If
your name appears on the food committee and you know that you will
be unable to attend the meeting, please let your chairperson*
know as soon as possible. If you need to make arrangements to have
someone else deliver your dish, that would be appreciated. You
could swap months with someone else. In lieu of either of those
options, a $10 donation would allow the chairperson to ensure that
we have enough food for all our members and guests.

Strippers
hosts Katharine McCaw and Lisa Coker put on a great Retreat at the
Cleek Retreat building last weekend. A fabulous time was had by
all 22 that attended. The Guild added 4 new members (just so they
could attend retreat next year) to their roster. The food was
wonderful and a big thanks to Lisa for the menu planning and
grocery shopping and to Katharine for making it all happen. Even
though the official "bat out of hell" award was not
presented, I think the majority feel that Joann should receive it
due to her "power sewing" technique. If she had stayed
later on Sunday I bet that top would have been completely
finished. The mystery quilt was a big hit and we can't wait to see
all the finished products at Guild meeting. Connie Cawthon was
able to get her top finished - another power sewer!! A new
friendship group was formed - the PDA group who beamed and beamed
software back and forth. Everyone is already looking forward to
the next one. Katharine is now taking deposits for next year.
The
August meeting will be at the home of Greta Starnater. Her address
is in the directory or see her for directions.
Refreshments
for August will be brought by Pebble, Allen & Betty Day, Sue
Childers, Mary Lou Strohm, Jo Ann Cross and Linda Franklin.

July
meeting was a very small intimate group that met at Katharine
McCaw’s for a lovely evening of sewing and visiting. Katharine
served a delicious dinner. The rest of the evening was spent
discussing the members not present!

Crunchy
Cabbage
( brought
to Cleek Retreat by new member, Connie Kline and it was a big
hit!)
1/2
head of cabbage, chopped
3
green onions, chopped fine (optional)
1/2
cup chopped almonds
2-3
Tbsp sesame seeds (optional)
1
package Ramen noodle soup, noodles broken
Combine
cabbage and onions. Toast almonds, sesame seeds and broken noodles
in a 350° oven, let cool. Add to cabbage.
Dressing
1/2
cup vegetable oil
1/4
cup sugar
1/3
cup vinegar
1/2
package of soup mix
1/2
tsp salt (optional)
Mix
all of the above and pour over cabbage. Stir to blend.
(This
is a great take along salad...put the cabbage in a sealed bowl and
put noodles and nuts in ziplock bag. Mix dressing ahead and store
until ready to serve.)

Just
a Few Minutes…
The
Cotton Patch Quilt Guild met at Kavanaugh United Methodist Church
in Greenville on June 24, 2004. Forty-seven members attended, as
well as six guests and one new member, Margie Hendrix. Guests were
Lauren McManus, Vernon Day, Margaret Patton, Deborah Schleif, Jaki
Sheffield and Mary Beth Dees.
The
Tulip Quilt, made and donated to the Kritters as a fundraiser, was
on display with raffle tickets for sale. Also for sale, to benefit
the Kritters, was fabric donated by Link Linkenauger at Deco
Trunk.
Door
prizes went to eight lucky quilters. Treasurer, Mary Smith,
reported a balance of $2,739. A letter of thanks from the Walworth
Harrison Library in Greenville was read, thanking the Community
Service committee for the gift of
fourteen
quilting books. A note of thanks was also received from Women In
Need for tee shirts.
Program
Chairman, Pebble Rehm, would like to plan a Mystery Quilt day on
August 28; more discussion on that at the July guild meeting. Rehm
still needs demonstrators for Skills Night in November. Anyone
willing to share a special talent or technique should notify her.
Plans are proceeding for a quilt show on Sept. 30 and October 1,
2005, at the National Guard Armory in Greenville. Everyone will be
asked to contribute handmade articles to be sold in the Quilt
Store. Also planned are a challenge block contest, a silent
auction, a bed-turning (!) and many vendors. The theme will be
Autumn and the title will remain, as it has been for previous
shows, "Harvest of Quilts".
Following
a short intermission, the program on Floor Cloths was presented by
Susan Howell. We learned that floor cloths had their beginning in
France in the 1400s and were used mainly as wall decor or table
runners. They were used on floors until the late 19th century when
linoleum came into use. Howell demonstrated the process of
constructing a floor cloth and displayed many of her own beautiful
finished cloths. These were offered for sale following the
meeting.
Kay
Colcleasure had copies of a Quilt History Record for everyone at
the meeting. Members may then make duplicates and keep a history
of each quilt made.
Next
month we will have an Ice Cream Social and play Quilto, with the
pennies (markers) going to the guild library. There will also be
an orphan book and magazine sale to benefit the library.
Respectfully,
Barbara
Ratcliff
