PATCH QUILT GUILD
GREENVILLE, TX
March,
2004
“In
character, in manners,in style, in all things, the supreme excellence is
simplicity.”
Henry
Wadsworth Longfellow

Letter
from the President
Dear Quilters,Where
is this year going!! It's already the middle of March and I'm still
finding Christmas scraps under the sofa cushions! My daffodils, hyacinths,
crocus and redbud are adding color to the drab landscape; I even have
azaleas in bud.
The
Strippers' retreat at Eufaula was great, as usual. And we added four new
members to the guild! Ate too much, stayed up too late, and didn't
accomplish what I promised myself I would. But how could I sit at the
sewing machine all day when there were quilt shops to explore! And fabric
to buy! Another big Thank You to Sue Childers.
Elsewhere
in this newsletter is a request that applies to all members of the guild.
Pebble, Lisa, Allen and I will attend the March 30 TAQG meeting which will
be specifically oriented toward quilt show chairmen. This will be a Mecca
of information. Please think carefully about what you would like us to ask
of current and past show chairmen from all over north and east Texas. This
will be invaluable in coming to a decision about our sponsoring a show.
Put your questions in writing, please, and give them to me at the March 25
meeting.
Piecefully,
Katharine

Hilton Pace has been teaching quiltmaking since 1990 and traveling the
state of Texas since 1994 presenting programs and workshops to guilds of
all sizes. She is the owner/designer of Wild Prairie Patterns, which have
been featured in Keepsake Quilting’s catalog and has written for several
national quilt magazines. She lives in Weatherford and says she loads her
suburban full of quilts and things to show!
Her
program will help our new quilters with basic techniques as well as share
tips and pointers for our experienced quilters. She will be showing
samples of her Wild Prairie Patterns as well.

Quilt-a-thon
to honor soldiers killed in Iraq
Quilters
will gather at Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas on March 25 to honor soldiers
who have died in Iraq. Operation Quilted Comfort is inspired from the
efforts of Betty Nielsen of Varina, Iowa who was the project coordinator
of the “Freedom Quilt” for the families that lost family and friends
in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
The goal is
to complete as many quilts as possible in one day. Valerie Taber and
LeeAnn Volesky, wives of service men stationed at Fort Hood are the
coordinators of the project. Some quilts are already in the planning
stages at the home base for the 4th Infantry Division of the U.S. Army.
Any and all volunteers are needed for the quilt-a-thon (quilting and/or
sewing skills are NOT required).
What a
fabulous way to honor our service men and women for their courage and
sacrifice, as well as showing support for their family members! Could you
possibly lend your talents and give up a day for them? If you know anyone
living close to the base, contact them and spread the word!

Happy
Birthday!

Please!
Please! Please!
If you know
that you will be making a report or an announcement at the guild meeting,
give Barbara Ratcliff a written copy of it. It doesn't have to be formal
or fancy, just factual. This will be so helpful in compiling the minutes.
Katharine

As
mentioned
at the last guild meeting, the March 30 meeting of TAQG will feature
information specifically for quilt show chairmen. This is an opportunity
to have ANY and ALL questions answered by experienced and knowledgeable
individuals. Since our guild hasn't had a show in eight years, there will
be many questions about everything from legalities and liability to
committee staffing. In order to decide whether or not to undertake such a
project, it's vital to have as much information as possible. At the guild
meeting on March 25, I will collect any written questions and concerns,
which you might have and take them to the TAQG session on March 30 for
clarification. Please do not give me your questions
orally - I'll forget them. Put it in writing! Between now and the
guild meeting, be thinking seriously and carefully. Let's be informed!!
See the schedule on page 5 for future meetings.

Belles met at Bernice’s house on March 1. Fish donation for the month
was $41 plus a $10 gift certificate. The circle members voted to continue
making items for the Fish Auction and making stockings for the Salvation
Army. A work day is scheduled for May 3rd at LaNell’s. LaNell, Vickie,
Nora and Kay showed their Kansas dug-out squares. LaNell showed her “bug
quilt” made for her granddaughter. Kay showed her baby quilt. Sue had
made 2 table runners and showed her work on “Grandmother’s Flower
Garden” quilt. Sherry had made pillow cases and a different arrangement
of Kansas dug-out. Marcia brought the dessert and Vickie will bring it in
April.

Our
Circle met February 16 to assemble our 30's Snowball quilt. We have
all enjoyed this technique and the quilt is looking great. The rows
were all sewn together and various members took home the leftover parts to
complete for final assembly the next meeting. We enjoyed show
and tell and made plans to attend the Grapevine Quilt Show the same week.
We chose to not do secret pals this year but we did use this meeting to
have a gift exchange for a special pal of the day.
Our
meeting March 1 was a real worker bee day. In addition to
celebrating Belva's birthday we basted our Snowball quilt and also
began on a strip pieced quilt using brights from our scraps and a
periwinkle blue as the center stripe. This method has a bit of twist
to it as the fabrics on each side of the blue strip run at opposite
angles. If we all do our homework we will have a striking quilt next
meeting. We welcomed yet another new member, Joane Walvoord.

The
March 11th meeting was held at the church with about 23 members. After the
wonderful refreshments were served, a few announcements were made. Don’t
forget to bring in your new or gently used baby clothes, receiving
blankets, diaper shirts, etc. for the Community Clinic. We will have a
“Baby Shower” at the April meeting.
Susan
survived another Eufaula Retreat! Many thanks to her for coordinating the
effort and getting our new “inductees” inducted. A good time was had
by all! The dates for the November retreat are November 18-21. This is a
different date than what was mentioned at retreat. She is taking money now
for the November retreat. Jane #1 (passed around thank you cards for
everyone to sign for Vicki and Pat and will also send one to Janice.
Katharine announced that there are only a few spots left for Summer
Retreat. She will open it up to the Guild at the March meeting. Those
dates are July 15-18. Make sure you get your deposit to Katharine.
Plan
on bringing whatever you have finished on your Bloomin’ 9 Patch. You
might be eligible for a prize from Jane’s sewing room. Pebble is
planning on having a class at the May Strippers meeting (depending on how
many have finished what rows) to learn to assemble your quilt.
Please
keep Joy Gregory in your thoughts & prayers. Her home was hit by the
tornado last week (when we were in Eufaula.) Luckily no one was injured
but there was damage to their home.
April
refreshments will be brought by Debra Hagar, Mary Jane Spinar, Katharine
McCaw, Pat Jonz, Linda Franklin, Joy Gregory, Kay Colcleasure and Shirley
Shaw. If you haven’t signed up for the refreshment list, see Jane #1

Only
a Quilter by Tom and Madge Powis, June 2003
We've all
heard the classic line that only a quilter would take yards and yards of
material, cut it into little pieces and then sew them back together again.
While this statement is true and a little funny to think about, it doesn't
even scratch the surface of the things that only a quilter would do.
Only a
Quilter would spend more hours sewing several hundreds of buttons on a
quilt to embellish it, but wouldn't take five minutes to replace a button
on a pair of pants.
Only a
Quilter would give the gift of a wedding quilt two months after the birth
of the couple's second child.
Only a
Quilter would put hundreds of dollars worth of fabric into her fabric
stash because she might find a use for it sometime, but wouldn't replace a
50-cent needle on her sewing machine.
Only a
Quilter would let three later-arriving patients go ahead of her at the
doctor's office because she is on the verge of completing a block.
Only a
Quilter would rush to finish a gift quilt. Not so it's done in time for
the recipient's birthday, but so it's done in time for Show and Tell.
Only a
Quilter would make a special quilt to give to her son, who would then have
to attend quilt shows just to see it.
Only a
Quilter would use freezer paper in the production of something to keep
someone warm.
Only a
Quilter has a welcome mat at the door to her home and an "Enter At
Your Own Risk" sign on the door of her sewing room.
Only a
Quilter invites everyone to see her sewing room, then says, "Don't
look at the mess."
Only a
Quilter says, "I really don't need another project," then offers
to make a quilt for a friend.
Only a
Quilter will buy more than she'll ever need of one fabric for her stash,
but slightly less than is needed of another fabric to
complete a
project.
Only a
Quilter would give a quilt book to the guild auction then bid on it to get
it back.
Only a
Quilter would drive 40 miles in a hurricane to attend a quilt show, but
call out to have her dinner delivered because it is drizzling.
Only a
Quilter's family would put up with, understand and love a quilter.

Just a Few
Minutes…
The
Cotton Patch Quilt Guild met at 6:30 p.m. on February 26, 2004, at Wesley
United Methodist Church in Greenville. Fifty-three members and nine guests
attended. Wesley UMC graciously offered their facility when Kavanaugh UMC
developed a serious gas leak and had to be temporarily closed down. A
thank you note and check for $50 will be sent to Wesley.
The president, Katharine
McCaw, thanked the food committee and welcomed members and guests: Diane
Oglesby, Jeannie Herring, Joyce Grubbs, Laura Edwards, Billie Grazier,
Sandy Knemeyer, Judy Hall and Darlene Smith. Jan Ainsworth, a former
member, and Grubbs joined the guild.
BUSINESS
The business meeting opened
with a drawing for seven door prizes. Pebble Rehm, program chairman, asked
that those who signed up but did not attend the "Boxes and
Birdhouses" workshop purchase one of the patterns for $5.00. This
will help defray the travel expenses of the presenter, who came from
Tulsa, OK. Rehm also issued a final call for those wishing to join the
"Bloomin' Nine Patch" group which began in January.
Treasurer, Mary Smith,
reported a balance of $3,366.52.
Lisa Coker is our guild
representative to the Texas Association of Quilt Guilds. TAQG will sponsor
a Rally Day from 9 to 4 pm on July 31 in Tyler. Admission is by showing a
membership card in any of the TAQG member guilds. Coker will display and
sell raffle tickets on our Patriotic Quilt at the Tyler event. All TAQG
meetings are open for attendance; the next meeting is March 30. Call Coker
for more information and directions.
In the absence of Pam
Hodapp, Allen Day took the remaining photographs of members for the 2004
directory. There are still some members who have not picked up their new
directory.
The Patriotic Quilt will be
displayed at Quilt Mercantile in Celeste and then at Texas Quiltworks in
Rockwall, according to design chairman, Gwen Schroth. Tickets are selling
well. Just keep it up! Maxine Leverett is the Greenville contact for
ticket sales.
The Community Service
Committee offered a large number of quilt magazines for sale, as well as
some wonderful hard-backed books featuring Christmas crafts and quilts.
This income helps to fund community service projects.
Pam Hodapp is in New York
with her mother, who underwent surgery and is doing well. Shirley Shaw had
carpal tunnel day surgery. She is rapidly recovering and was at the guild
meeting. Joy Gregory's 5-year old granddaughter, who is in Walter Reed
Hospital in Washington, D.C., is steadily improving. Guild members voted
to make a quilt for her. Linda Franklin's mother's broken arm is healing.
Linda will stay on Guam with her for a few more weeks.
McCaw has been in touch
with Sullivan’s, makers of the quilt basting spray that was used on our
second Butterfly Quilt, and has bled through the fabric, causing
discoloration. The manufacturer disclaims any liability, saying that the
spray was probably applied too heavily. They recommended taking the quilt
to a dry cleaner.
McCaw has contacted the
Greenville Chamber of Commerce about the feasibility of their support and
involvement if the guild decides to have a guilt show in 2005. The
response was favorable. More information will follow.
Fifteen ladies shared
projects during Show and Tell. The secretary read a note of appreciation
from Doris McManus, following her bout with a broken leg.
PROGRAM
Sue Welton, president of
the Tyler guild presented "Glorious Quilts With Tricks". Welton
makes large, bed-size quilts, and tried to convince us how "simple it
is to put them together". Some were appliqued and some were pieced,
but all were magnificent. Her wonderful sense of humor was so appealing;
we "ooohhed" and "aaahhed" over one quilt after
another, which really pleased her. Everyone expressed the hope that she
will return for another program.
Meeting adjourned at 9:05
p.m.
Respectfully,
Barbara Ratcliff, Secretary
