Cotton
Belles
The
Cotton Belles met at La Nell's house for their May meeting. Everyone had
a fun day working on Christmas Stockings for the Salvation Army.
Everyone voted to give a wedding gift to Susan Cross's son. Everyone got
to see a beautiful baby hat made by Bernice. La Nell had made dessert
for our meeting.

Blossoms
The
Cotton Blossom Quilt Circle met April 19th. After discussing
our up-coming programs and honoring our birthday girl, Helen Rowe,
Norlyn and Helen had show and tell. We then enjoyed a mystery “make
and take”. We can no longer complain about never leaving a meeting
with a finished project. Thanks to Sherry at the Guild’s last Skills
Night we made those fun woven potholders.
May
3 we welcomed a guest, Charlene Heard, and presented Nancy Amburgey with
fat quarters in colors of her choice for her birthday. Priscilla
McFarland showed her UFO. She has completed a quilt started in 1998. She
heavily hand quilted it and it is beautiful. Nancy also showed her cute
cat quilt that was in the Dallas Show. She designed the quilt picturing
her 4 cats doing their “thing”. Margie completed a project that had
been in our box for a couple years. It is a paper doll quilt top in
pastels. We basted it and will use it to show new members about hand
quilting. We enjoyed sharing tips and patterns and plan to meet again

Strippers
29
Strippers met at the church. We had one guest Jeannie Herring, Joan
Bigg’s sister-in-law. Katharine pulled out yards and yards of fabric
and everyone pitched in and helped cut fat quarters for the Texas Quilt
meeting. Katharine announced that June 15 is the deadline for final
payment for summer retreat. Sue announced that the deadline for sign-up
for the Fall Retreat is August 31. Please let her know and get your
deposit in. If we don’t have enough people, we will have to cancel.
She will also need help with the coolers and boxes this year since her
truck is no longer allowed to leave Greenville. Everyone brought bags
and bags of stuff for the baby shower and Kathy Vestal said she would
get those delivered. Pebble gave the Bloomers a demonstration on how to
put their Blooming 9-Patch together and 2 “overachievers” showed off
their completed tops. Tracy had a few quilt tops for sale. The county
fair deadline was announced and Katharine asked for volunteers to sell
donation ticket chances or participate in some of their demos.
Refreshments
for June are: Tracy Greenlee, Sue Childers, Jane Asberry, Allen &
Betty Day, Joy Gregory; Debra Hagar, Pam Hodapp, Sherri Parsley.
Jane
resigned as “unofficial dictator” and Kathy Vestal graciously
volunteered. If you have any announcements or suggestions, please give
them to her. Thanks to all for your support! Jane Martyn

Sues
The Sues met at the home
of Maejean. We had a fabulous meal and a wonderful time visiting. Mary
Jane brought her urgent work project home with her so everyone pitched
in and turned or stuffed these “thing-a-ma-jigs”. It was great fun.
The next meeting will be at the home of Kathy Vestal (if made possible
by construction). If not, watch email carefully in case we change it.

As
we all know, every problem does, in fact, have a solution!! The problem
of the day - or as in this case, the month - has been keeping everyone
comfortably warm or cool in the Fellowship Hall at Kavanaugh. Since we
are ladies (well, most of us!) of varying ages, hormone levels, body
padding and individual preference, I have spent considerable time
adjusting the thermostat to accommodate our members. But apparently, so
have other user-groups, thereby upsetting the pre-set automatic function
of the system. So-o-o, from now on, we don't touch the thermostat! It's
been taken out of our hands (pun intended!)
The
solution to our comfort levels is right in our closets and drawers.
Bring a jacket or sweater if you usually get too cool, and dress in
layers if you get too warm. As I have discovered and shared with many
others, there are areas of the room that are warmer/cooler than others.
It has to do with the vents. Find a spot where you are most comfortable
and stake your claim on it!!

Executive
Board Meeting Minutes
The
Executive Board of the Cotton Patch Quilt Guild met in quarterly session
at the Cracker Barrel Restaurant in Greenville at 6:30 p.m. on April 12,
2004. Members present were Katharine McCaw, Pam Hodapp, Tracy Greenlee,
Mary Smith, Kay Colcleasure and Barbara Ratcliff.
Colcleasure
is refining the details of a phone tree. Its purpose would be to quickly
notify members of vital and/or emergency information, such as the recent
need to meet at Wesley UMC.
Greenlee
stressed the importance of officers' reports for the newsletter being
submitted in a timely fashion. She is currently mailing about 42 hard
copies, in addition to a copy to each first-time visitor. Smith reported
a checking account balance of $2,782.77 as of March 31, 2004.
In
the 2004 budget, there was no provision for funds for a raffle quilt in
2005. This was because, at the time, the guild believed that the second
Butterfly quilt would be the 2005 raffle quilt. The Design Committee is
therefore requesting funds for a 2005 quilt. Hodapp suggested, and the
board approved, that $250 be allocated from the surplus in Membership.
The surplus is due to increased membership over the budgeted number.
Colcleasure
brought to the board three suggestions for by-laws changes, submitted in
writing at the March guild meeting. 1) That "membership fees be
prorated for members joining after Feb. 1. The idea is to reduce the
dues by $2.00 per month." 2) Add 6.13 to the published duties of
the newsletter editor. 3) Correct the numbering of Articles X and XI. In
the one-page revision given out in March, Art. IX was numbered twice.
The board, referring to fee schedules of other area guilds, voted to
recommend no change. Regarding the proposed additional duty of the
newsletter editor, it seemed redundant to stipulate that the editor
publish proposed by-laws changes when it is already stated that the
proposed changes will be published in April. As for the duplicate
numbering, that is obviously a typo since it appears only on the latest
revision page and not on the primary version of the by-laws. Members
should make the corrections McCaw expressed concern that, because of the
guild's growth, we are not paying enough attention to making our
visitors and new members welcome and comfortable. It was suggested that
each month 3 or 4 members act as greeters at the door. Visitors will be
"paired" with a current host member who will introduce the
visitor, make sure she signs the guest register, and offer assistance.
Board members will assume this responsibility in April.
In
an attempt to shorten the overall meeting time, all programs will be
scheduled for the first half of the meeting; door prizes, Show and Tell
and business will be conducted following intermission. More information
that has heretofore been given during guild meetings will now be
published in the newsletter.
A
final vote on a proposed quilt show in 2005 will be asked at the April
meeting.
Meeting
adjourned at 8:05 p.m.
Respectfully,
Barbara
Ratcliff

Please
vote your choice on whether to designate the guild's Certificate of
Deposit as seed money for the quilt show in 2005. The CD would not
be liquidated prior to its maturity. By-laws reference: Art. VII.7.04

There
are still a few Membership Directories which have not been picked up.
These will be available at the June meeting.
Please
see Sherri Parsley or Tracy Greenlee if you will be picking up your
directory, since I will be unable to be at the June meeting.

Just
a Few Minutes…
The
Cotton Patch Quilt Guild met at Kavanaugh United Methodist Church at
6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 22, 2004 with 36 members and 4 guests
present. Many of our members were enjoying themselves at the American
Quilt Society show in Paducah, KY. Kay Colcleasure greeted guests and
members as they came in. President, Katharine McCaw, thanked the
refreshment committee for the wonderful meal, and welcomed our guests:
Billie Driggers, Silas Bacon, Cindy Waltrip and Deanna Sanford.
Lynn
Welch, a national quilt show winner and member of the Plano and Dallas
guilds, presented the program, "Landscape Quilts". Using a
series of slides, she showed how trees, rivers, flowers, mountains, etc.
are recreated through fabric arrangement, in everything from miniature
to full sized quilts. Accompanying the slide presentation she pointed
out various design elements, construction techniques and use of color.
Design
committee chair, Lisa Coker, passed around pictures of three possible
selections for a 2005 raffle quilt. Due to lack of a quorum this month,
the choice will be voted on in May.
McCaw
has registered our guild with "Quilts and Other Comforts"
magazine. The guild has been assigned a number; each time one of our
members makes a purchase from the catalog, points are accrued toward the
purchase of quilting items that might benefit the guild.Judy Hall, of
Texas Quiltworks, has offered to purchase for us books at cost for the
guild library. We are very grateful to her.
Items
made by Alice Cooney, Jane Martyn, Maxine Leverett, Mary Jane Spinar,
Michele Chitsey and LaNelle Bundick were shared during Show and Tell.
McCaw,
Sherry Worley and Pebble Rehm attended the TAQG meeting in Lewisville on
March 30. The secondary meeting, "So You're Having a Quilt
Show", was of particular interest to the trio. A reminder: Rally
Day in Tyler on July 31. Our guild will donate fat quarters for the
goody bags, which will be given to everyone attending. A
fat-quarter-cutting workday will be scheduled before the May guild
meeting, since items for the bags must be taken to the TAQG meeting on
May 25. Entry to the Rally is free, but attendees must show guild
membership cards. See the April newsletter or contact Lisa Coker for
more information.
The
guild will sponsor "Solid Rock Cafe" at Kavanaugh on
Wednesday, May 12. Carolyn Burt is coordinating the menu and workers. A
sign-up sheet was circulated.
The
quarterly "pass the hat" for the guild library netted $50.00.
The
Hunt County Fair is June 4 - 12. Entries in the Creative Arts division
will be accepted May 24, between 2:00 and 7:00 p.m. in the Creative Arts
Building at the fairgrounds.
The
Strippers' summer retreat July 8 - 11 at Cleek Retreat Center now has a
waiting list. The balance of $30 - for those who already made the $5
deposit - is due no later than June 15. That is also the cut-off date
for refunds. For more information, contact McCaw or Coker.
Joy
Gregory, Chair, Debra Hager, Maxine Leverett and Shirley Hogan presented
four options as a solution to the problem of the (stained) 2001
Butterfly guilt. 1) A drawing among those who worked on the quilt in any
way; 2) A silent auction among the membership; 3) A raffle among the
membership, to extend over an undetermined time frame; 4) A live auction
among the membership. Each of these options will be open to guild
members only, and will be carried out only during regular guild
meetings. A vote will be taken at the May meeting.
McCaw
called for a vote regarding a 2005 guild-sponsored quilt show. No
questions were taken concerning details, merely a yes or no vote to have
a show. Including proxy votes, there were enough members for a quorum,
and the vote indicated that a show is desired. Pebble Rehm and Allen Day
will co-chair. They will select the location, dates, theme, etc., and
assemble committees based on results of a willingness- to-help survey of
the guild. More information will be available at the May meeting.
Meeting
adjourned at 9:00 p.m.
