Letter
from the President
Dear
Quilters,
Well,
we're finally getting some appropriate weather for the
season! Ninety degrees in November is just not
acceptable! Cooler temperatures inspire us to start
thinking about those quilting projects that we've
earmarked for winter, when there's a good excuse for
staying inside. Fall is such a beautiful time to enjoy
the outdoors, the changing colors, and the craft and
quilt shows, and walking in the woods. But thinking
ahead: this week I've brought firewood and potted plants
up on the porch, and replaced the furnace filter. Next
on the agenda, Fort Hood blocks and quilt show items!
What
do you think the odds are that the Design Chairperson
would win our raffle quilt two years in a row?! I'm not
a statistician, but it's probably in the millions! How
wonderful that both quilts awarded this month went to
guild members - sort of like "staying within the
family". I love it.
Don't
forget that the November and December meetings are a
week earlier. I hope everyone who's not at Eufaula will
make a special effort to attend this month. Bring your
machines, mats and scissors; Sherry will put us all to
work on items for the guild store. Call her if you have
questions.
This
may be a bit premature, but planning ahead, guild dues
will be taken at the December meeting. They are
delinquent on Feb. 1, and since not everyone comes every
month, Pam will take your $24 if you wish to pay early.
Piecefully,
Katharine

Community
Service Projects
Let
the rally cry for all to come armed with scissors,
rotary cutters, rulers and mats for a night of fun,
laughter and fabric flying! Sherry Worley and the
community service group have asked us to help cut, sew
or do whatever needs to be done to get some projects
ready for later production and/or completion. It could
be baby quilts or items for the guild store at next
year’s quilt show. So come one and all and get those
rotary cutters smokin’!

Executive
Board Meeting Minutes
The
Executive Board of the Cotton Patch Quilt Guild met at
the Cracker Barrell Restaurant on October 18, 2004.
Attending were Katharine McCaw, President; Barbara
Ratcliff, Secretary; Linda Franklin, Librarian; Pam
Hodapp, Membership; Kay Colcleasure, Parliamentarian.
Balances YTD for all offices were reviewed and reported
to be at or below budget. The guild is exactly on track
through September 1, with expenditures at 2/3 annual
budget. Hodapp reported seven new members during the 3rd
quarter, bringing the total to 94.
Franklin
has surplus library funds and would like to have input
regarding books, videos, etc. that the membership would
like to have added to the library.
A
nominating committee will be elected at the October
meeting. By-laws call for three members and two
alternates. McCaw stated that ideally each circle will
be represented, as well as non-circle members.. There is
already a volunteer candidate from the Strippers. The
committee will present a proposed slate at the November
meeting.
The
board considered the topic of beverages served at guild
meetings. There appears to be a lot of waste of soft
drinks. Bottles are opened but not completely used. If
they're returned to the cabinet they are flat before the
next meeting. Therefore, it was recommended that tea,
coffee and water be offered. Members may certainly bring
their own beverages or purchase them at the drink
machine at the church. An added benefit of this change
would be that fewer members are needed on each
refreshment list, making longer time periods between
names coming up on the list. The board also recommends
that each food chairperson assign two persons from the
monthly list to act as greeters on guild night. There
could be special badges identifying the greeters, making
visitors feel especially welcome.
The
subject of software was discussed. The Newsletter
Editor, Treasurer and Membership chairperson each use
personal software. If this office-specific data is to be
turned over to incoming officers, the guild should
investigate making these purchases.
McCaw
reminded officers (except treasurer) that annual reports
are due at the December meeting. This applies to
committee chairs, as well. These reports should cover
budget, achievements during the year and recommendations
for the coming year. One copy goes to the secretary, one
to the president and one to each incoming officer.
Separate from the annual report, a budget request for
2005 from each officer and committee chair (if in place)
is also due at the December meeting and is to be given
to the treasurer so that a proposed budget may be
presented to the combined boards no later than Jan. 7,
2005. McCaw asked that these reports be completed in a
thoughtful and timely manner.
Respectfully,
Barbara
Ratcliff

Belles
The
Cotton Belles met in the small dining room at Kavanaugh
Methodist Church November 1. Everyone brought in their
items for the Fish auction to be held November 19. The
Fish donation was $33.00 from the club members. Everyone
spent the day putting together items for the auction.
Sherry showed her flannel quilt made for a family
member. Nora Whitehead provided desert. The Christmas
meeting is scheduled for Dec. 21.

Blossoms
On
October 27 the Blossoms made their annual road trip to
Dallas to deliver 24 quilts to the Ronald
McDonald
House. We thank the Community Service Committee
and Beth Winn for donating quilts to this cause.
As we took two new people with us this time, we were
treated to a complete tour of the facility. It is
an amazing place. We then stopped for lunch at a
wonderful Italian restaurant. The food was great
and the meal enjoyable. After we ate it was onward
to two quilt shops for some shopping before making our
way home.
We met again on November 1 at Quilts on the Square.
We gave quilts to three-year-old twin girls. One
of the little girls has had several surgeries in her
short life but had never stayed in the Ronald McDonald
House; therefore, she has never received a quilt.
We thought she should have one and we knew the sister
would need one also. Jo Ann Cross heard about the
girls and donated two quilt tops that she and Beth Winn
had pieced together. Francis Stinnett and Norlyn
Quinn quilted them.
The
girls were delighted with the quilts, and we were
pleased to have Jo Ann and Beth at the meeting to see
the twins receive the quilts. We will meet again
on November 15 and our Christmas meeting will be on
December 10 at Madeline's quilt house.

Just
a Few Minutes…
The
Cotton Patch Quilt Guild met at Kavanaugh United
Methodist Church on Thursday, October 28, 2004. Pebble
Rehm presided in the absence of the president, Katharine
McCaw. We welcomed one visitor, Silas Bacon, Debra and
Michele's father.
The
meeting opened with awarding of the first round of door
prizes, followed by the announcement that our own
Charlotte Maxwell, from Kerrville, had bought the
winning ticket for the Tulip Quilt! When notified, she
had forgotten all about buying it at the March Eufaula
Retreat! Congratulations, Charlotte. Thanks to the
Belles, the Kritters are $800 richer now. Many, many
thanks!
The
Kritter room was open for Bazaar purchases during
intermission and following the meeting.
Librarian,
Linda Franklin, distributed a survey questionnaire to
determine how the guild would like to spend the funds
remaining in that account.
Treasurer,
Mary Smith reported that, to date, the Patriotic Quilt
has brought in $1760 for the guild.
Community
Service is in charge of the November meeting. We were
asked to bring scissors, cutting mats and machines so
that we may begin making items for the quilt show guild
store. Fort Hood blocks (6 1/2 " ) are coming in
and will be accepted at the November meeting. Joan Biggs
has donated four bolts of "Cat in the Hat"
fabric to be used for Community Service projects.
Rehm
reminded the membership that each member is expected to
make and contribute at least one miniature quilt for
next October's quilt show.
Condolences
were extended to Carolyn Burt on the loss of her
husband, Harold, following a years-long illness. Many of
Carolyn's friends in the guild attended the celebration
of his life. Sue Miller is recovering, following
surgery; Mary Lou Strohm's sister, Marge - a regular
attendee at Eufaula retreats - now has a pacemaker. Jane
Asberry will have hip replacement this month.
Door
prizes went to five more lucky ladies.
The
guild has chosen May 9 to sponsor Solid Rock Cafe at
Kavanaugh. Debra Hager will coordinate.
Following
discussion about beverages at guild meetings, Alice
Cooney
moved that only coffee, tea and water be provided. The
rationale is that so much soda is being left over and
wasted. Members wanting soda with their meal will bring
their own - and take home any left - or buy it from the
vending machine at the church. Motion passed. Also
adopted: two members of each month's refreshment
committee (to be selected by the chairperson) will serve
as greeters, welcoming visitors and attendees.
Debra
Hager announced that $134 has come in on the Butterfly
Quilt. It will be awarded in December.
Many
wonderful items were displayed for Show and Tell.
A
nominating committee was elected and will present a
proposed slate of officers at the November meeting.
Those serving will be: Allen Day from the Strippers,
Marcia Ryder from the Belles, Madeline Sullivan from the
Blossoms, and Pat Jonz and Kathy Vestal At-Large.
Donna
Moon was presented with a signed Friendship quilt by her
Stripper
friends to celebrate her continuing recovery from breast
cancer.
The
moment everyone has been anticipating for the past year
was a real showstopper. For the second year in a row,
the Design Committee chairperson has won the raffle
quilt! This year, Gwen Schroth is the lucky winner,
following Betty Day last year. Schroth emotionally
shared that she will present the quilt to her nephew,
who has just returned from Iraq. Any volunteers for
Design Committee Chair for next year?!
The
December guild meeting will again be "Covered
Dish". Those who wish may bring items for a gift
exchange: $5.00 or homemade. Also asked for are baby
items for the Community Medical Clinic.
Following
intermission, Deborah Mouser entertained and enlightened
us with a slide show and trunk show of "Snippet
Sensations". Lots of ideas were shared;
"Cuddle Critters" kits were offered for sale.
Remember,
the November meeting is the THIRD Thursday, November 18.
Mark your calendars.
Respectfully,
Barbara
Ratcliff
