Letter
from the President
Dear
Quilters,
As
I write this, I am preparing to leave tomorrow to be with my sister in
Washington, D.C. for three weeks. She underwent a hip replacement this
week and will need some help negotiating the three floors of her house.
But I'll be back in time for the September meeting!
Since
we FINALLY had a quorum in August (Whew!), we can move forward now on
the technicality of being able to vote! This by-laws sub-section is
overdue for revision. We have literally been unable to conduct business
at our meetings, because of the lack of a quorum. For many years, the
old definition of "a majority of the membership" served us
well. But we've grown steadily, with members from distances too great to
attend meetings, so it's now time for us to re-think the issue of a
quorum. At the August meeting, those present indicated that they wished
to adopt "a majority of the members present at a regular
meeting" as the definition of a quorum. We'll take the formal vote
in September. I hope everyone will make a very special effort to attend
because we'll still be operating under the old rule until the new one is
approved. If you can't make it in September, please, please contact Pam
Hodapp and give her your proxy.
Mary
Smith will be gone in September, so I'll be handling the checkbook. See
me for deposits or reimbursements.
Next
month the Kritters will again have fabric for sale. It's odd widths, but
for $.25, $.50 and $1.00 a yard, it's the best bargain in town. Already
measured and cut for borders!!
Piecefully,
Katharine

Heavenly
Quilters & Cheri Meineke-Johnson
If
her name sounds familiar, her father, Sam Meineke is the founder of
Meineke Car Care. Fortunately, she followed her mother’s lead and got
into quilting instead! Cheri has owned and operated her shop since 1979.
Her signature style is using one fabric, fussy cuts, repeats, nine degree
ruler and circles. She has had a quilt accepted into the AQS show and was
included in the program “America Quilts” on PBS. Her newest style is
embellishment using hot fix crystals, which she markets as Cheri’s
Crystals. She also enjoys working with hand-dyed fabrics. Her latest
venture is opening a shop in Plano to rep the new HQ 16 midarm quilting
machine for Handiquilter. She offers classes on her techniques as well as
the HQ 16 quilting machine.

sold as possible before the October meeting. If you do not think you are
going to sell your tickets, please turn them in at the next Guild Meeting

you sell those that were distributed to you! If you have sold tickets and
not crossed your name off of Gwen's list, please let her know how much
money you turned in for your tickets.

Our
Aug. 16 meeting produced a great show and tell as several members had gone
right home to complete their Square-In-Square project before forgetting
what they were taught at our previous meeting. At this meeting we
again met early to learn Betty Hammock’s new piecing method using
freezer paper. Belva and Joyce did a fine job at teaching and being
patient with us. We are using 30’s fabric and will donate the quilt to
the Presbyterian Church Fall bazaar. Several members enjoyed a great time
at the Arlington quilt show.
On
Labor Day we met to assemble our 30’s squares. This quilt is looking
pretty darn cute. With deadlines to meet we enjoyed several show &
tell projects. All Ronald McDonald quilts and Quillos are due at our next
meeting.

Strippers
Twenty
Cotton Strippers met at Kavanaugh Methodist Church in Greenville on
Sept. 9th. Thanks to the refreshment committee for the great food.
After an update on Donna Moon & Joy Gregory, we enjoyed some wonderful
show-n-tell projects. Sara had 2 "Bloomin' Idiots" oops!
Blooming Nine Patches and proved you can make more than one and not go
crazy. Kay along with Sara & Tracy got the ball rolling on the
"Ugly Fabric" miniature quilt challenge. It's not too late to
join the fun. Just bring 2 fat quarters of "ugly fabric" and a
$1.00 to the next meeting at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 14th at
the church. The "mini" quilts need to be completed by the Feb.
2005 Strippers meeting.

Just
a Few Minutes…
Forty-eight
members of the Cotton Patch Quilt Guild and four guests met at Kavanaugh
United Methodist Church at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 26, 2004.
President, Katharine McCaw welcomed three new members: Gladys Guthrie,
Laurie Anderson and Linda Hevron. We hope Cathy Ross will visit us again.
Carol
Morrissey presented the program, "The Big Picture - Hand Dyed
Fabrics". After showing a number of vintage family quilts, Morrissey
displayed her own handiwork, which showcases her hand dyed fabrics
replicating the brightly colored blossoms in her garden. She explained the
dyeing process and offered yardage for sale.
Following
an intermission and Door Prizes, the guild addressed the issue of what
constitutes a quorum. After discussion and reviewing the policies of other
guilds, the consensus was that the simplest definition - " A majority
of the members present at a regular meeting" - was the best one.
(Elsewhere in this newsletter you will find the recommendation to be voted
on in September.) Since we will still be subject to the old quorum rule -
a majority of the membership - , it is extremely important that there be
sufficient attendance, or proxies, to accomplish the change. All who know
that they will be unable to attend the September meeting are urged to
contact Pam Hodapp and submit a proxy.
A
second issue to be considered was that of refreshments at guild meetings.
Four options were offered, with the vote overwhelmingly in favor of
serving only drinks and desserts. The new policy will be in effect in
September.
Program
Chair, Pebble Rehm, announced that Skill Night, previously scheduled for
the November meeting, has been rescheduled for January, 2005. This change
became necessary because of the change of date for the November Eufaula
retreat. The Cotton Belles will take charge of the November meeting, which
will be a Community Service work night.
Rehm
announced that Quilt Show 2005 plans are proceeding smoothly. Debra Hager
showed her original artwork that will be used for posters and
announcements for the show. The dates are Sept. 30 and Oct. 1, 2005. The
Cotton Belles will have charge of the store. Mary Manlove will bring and
display her collection of antique quilts.
Librarian,
Linda Franklin, has purchased a new cabinet for the library, and has
completed the re-cataloguing of all our resource materials. She asked that
we let her know of any special items that should be added to the library.
Due
to family circumstances and time constraints, Lisa Coker has resigned her
positions as Design Committee chair, Door Prize chair and TAQG
representative. Filling these responsibilities will be Mary Lou Strohm,
Door Prizes; Carolyn Burt, Design Committee; and Sherry Worley, TAQG
representative.
Respectfully,
Barbara
Ratcliff
